Thanks to the people who have come out to the comedy! It has been a good time!
I am very sad that the world is otherwise terrible right now. If you've been affected, and I know that many people have, please know that you have been in my thoughts.

Your doctor must not be a nerdfighter. They thought telling Hank “Million-Dollar-Idea” Green to avoid stress would make him slow down at all 😂😂
Telling Hank to avoid stress is like telling a whale to avoid water I think 😂
@@-Teague-Totally 😂😂
Was this liked by Hank or by John 🧐🤣
@@geisterkaktus I didn't even think about that but it's unclear 😂
Telling some to slow down is the worst thing you can do.
We got Nerd Musician Hank, then we got Sci Fi Writer Author Hank, now we have Stand Up Comedian Hank.
"eras" indeed
don't forget the un-official muscle hank
Now we just need Painter Hank and we can collect the whole art's set! (/j)

I went to your show last night. It was a blast! It felt so natural and organic, especially whenever you forgot where you were haha. My girlfriend who isn't a nerdfighter thought you did great too so thats an unbiased review :)
Woahhhhh she should become a Nerdfighter now
Send her this video!!!
Forgetting where I am is a staple of all Hank Green live performances.
It was also really great to see you in Buffalo! I started watching vlogbrothers and listening to DH&J 5 years ago when I started undergrad at UB, so you've kinda always been there in my life. I would've never thought you'd come to Buffalo so when I learned you were doing STANDUP.. IN BUFFALO.. I immediately forked over the money to get those tickets.
I'm so happy you're in remission and that the ANT-agonists in your body have been effectively exterminated, and I'm so happy I got to hear your story through a comedic lens.
I love it so much when performers have such a human moment as to forget what comes next or flub a line. When I heard Audra McDonald mess up a song (Audra McDonald messes up songs?!) and have to stop and talk to her pianist and talk to us, we were all so much on her side, instantly. She was brave enough to be vulnerable and mess up and keep going and share it with us and we loved her.
@@vlogbrothers "Forgetting Where I Am" would be a decent title for a standup show.
Please please please record and release it. Maybe for P4A? As a disabled person, there is such catharsis in hearing about experiences with illness that are funny, because sometimes you really gotta laugh at it.
+++
yes please as a disabled person who also doesn’t live in the US i would love if he released it in some way, as a p4a perk or on a streaming site or whatever.
Something we don't have to pay for hopefully. I would support everything these guys do if I could but I can't even afford 3 squares and my meds.
I would absolutely love this as a chronically ill person! For free would be preferable since I have medical bills and medications to pay for.
+++++++
The reason I want to go into stand-up is because it's cheaper than therapy and more cathartic
Therapy: you pay someone to talk about your emotions
Standup: they pay you to talk about your emotions
I cannot condone this!
@@vlogbrothers don't worry, my theater days are over. My days on the stage are in the past.
@@niftythegoblinTherapy: they give you advice. Standup: they laugh in your face.
@@KBRoller With standup you're trying to get a laugh, so it's a laughing with you rather than at you situation. Although it's always possible that something you intended to be taken seriously is misinterpreted as a joke.
My partner and I drove 4.5 hours to Buffalo from Kingston, and 4.5 hours back in the same night (circumnavigating lake Ontario) just to see this show and it was one of the best things we ever did together! It was a pilgrimage for us, and so incredible seeing the man who taught me more about science and life than my teachers ever could talk about cancer from an incredibly personal perspective. And wow was it so funny! Thank you Hank. Best tickets I ever bought.
I didn't think I'd miss the mustache. But I miss the mustache a bit?
As someone with a chronic illness this is such a mood.
Absolutely! It's really been validating to have someone assure me that what I'm experiencing isn't normal. It's like going through chemo - it sucks. I hope that you're finding ways to make life livable while dealing with the thing that sucks.
For real

Let us know when you're on tour!
I’ve thought about writing comedy about my husband dying of Covid at the age of 52. I’ve got a best friend that lost her husband 2 months after I did (yes we were best friends before they died) and our daughters have been best friends almost all their lives. So we have some pretty dark humor and I’m afraid some people might not appreciate it. But if you can laugh about cancer, I can laugh about widowhood. My kids best joke so far, now we can be Disney princesses!!!!!
I've lost a lot of family members and am no stranger to dark humor. I'd SO watch/listen to this
As a younger widow myself, I entirely approve of dark humor about death, and am 100% certain that my late husband (better late than never) would say the same.
@@SharonMick I hope this isn't inappropriate to say, but I really enjoy/appreciate that "better late than never" phrase & might share with some loved ones as we're grieving someone
@@senseisleepyhead I totally agree, I've never heard "better late than never" in this context but personally I find it really beautiful
“I can do that, and I WILL” is one of the things I admire most about you, Hank.
I'm also the "I can do that, so I will" type of ADHDer, so I applaud you for actually making these side quest things happen so consistently.
I feel this on a deep level
That's an ADHD thing? I thought it was an Autism thing. I have both so I guess for me it makes sense either way!
@burnyizland Autistic special interests tend to last much longer but yes ADHD impulsiveness and low attention spans lead to jumping from hyperfixation to hyperfixation. Very very much an ADHD thing to be a jack of all trades, a Renaissance soul or multi-specialized person. Autism is much more commonly associated with being impressively knowledgeable in one single highly specialized area.
You know you don't need to have a neuro-divergent condition to be interested in various things? If people allowed themselves and opened their mind even neurotypical would have multiple fixations. Its an aspect of personality. I've personally spent hours on 10 topics, sometimes simultaneously. I don't have either of those conditions.
You aren't broken Hank, just a little crumbly around the edges :)
And who doesn't love a good crumble

As an Israeli who lives in a very not fun time right now, this is exactly the right time to be funny, Hank. Laughter and escapism helps us keep going, despite the horrors.
Wishing you and your loved ones safety in this trying time❤
Hope you're safe, love from Nerdfighteria ❤
@cczwhite4480 Thank you so much
@@-Teague- Thank you
God bless you and your family and I wish you all safety. I’m an American born Palestinian and my stepmom and uncle are currently stuck in the West Bank uncertain of when they’ll be able to come back home (they were visiting from the states when the attacks happened). In a world with so much fear and hatred right now, I just wanted to say I wish you hope and laughter and love in these times.🫂💔❤️
I'm from Buffalo and it killed me to miss the show. My teen was mad that the show was 18 and over so I didn't go so they didn't feel left out.
Very cool of you.
Parent win!
I'm digging myself out of a deep pit of depression and anxiety triggered by chronic medical stuff and your show last night was the most I've laughed in a few years. I felt so safe in that crowd of Nerdfighters. Thank you for always remembering to be awesome and shaping such a wonderful community to be a part of.
As a stand-up who got cancer and then went back to stand-up after my own treatment, thank you for this, Hank. (I've shared this on my facebook page.)
wow this is the soonest i have seen your video after posting!
Hank I was at your show last night and it was fantastic! I hope you can get it filmed, I think a lot of people would love to see it. Also you were right about Matchbox 20.
Noooo you did the thing
I'm trying so hard to not do the thing
I just found out an old friend is starting chemo for stage 3 cancer. She's only in her 20s. I appreciate you being so open about your journey so I can be more understanding and respectful.
Avoiding stress != standup comedy.
So proud of you, Hank! You're a baller.
As a programmer with an anxiety disorder, I'd say "avoiding_stress == NULL" because I haven't figured out any way to do it, besides distracting myself with CZcams or literally being unconscious 😅
@@KBRoller You're a C programmer aren't you.
@@jayocaine2946Actually, I'm a Python dev and full stack MERN web dev.
"Then I was like, 'I can do that, and I _will_ !' " is the kind of mindset that I think might be exactly what I need in my life right now. I'm honestly very inspired by Hank trying out this standup thing, enjoying it, and deciding that he may not want to do it for much longer, but still being very happy that he did it. I hope I have that in me.
Thank you so so much for coming to Buffalo! As a long time caregiver for a cancer patient (who is thankfully in remission, but only recently got a therapist 🙃) your show last night was not only hilarious but also very cathartic. I hope others get to see it one day too, but I feel really lucky to have gotten the chance. It was super worth wading through the waves of Sabres supporters lol
I had such a great time at the show yesterday!! Drove down from Toronto and met so many lovely nerdfighters! you did a great job with the show. A+ experience overall :D
Comedy is perfect for recovery. Ten minutes of laughter can reduce your need for painkillers. It helped me after my cancer surgery.
Hey Hank! I just wanted to say, Thank you for sharing your journey with Cancer. I was very recently diagnosed with a rare type of blood cancer and I think watching you go through everything helped me not be as scared as I start my own journey. I live just outside of Syracuse and was so pumped (weeks ago) to see you were coming to do a show... though I won't be able to go because you had already sold out! (Go you!) So I hope that you enjoy your time in NY and that your shows go well, I'll be cheering you on in spirit! :)
I hope you get all the bestest nurses and best of luck! May your prognosis just keep getting better and better! ❤
^ Support & well-wishes from Canada! 💜
Hope you're doing well! DFTBA!
I'm so proud of you for taking it down a notch! Way to go!!!
I'm glad you found a creative outlet that has been so enjoyable for you through such a tough time! Really looking forward to seeing the video of it if you do manage to get it recorded. Would totally pay $ for that, especially if it goes to charity.
Hey Hank!! I’m a RIT student who watched your interview yesterday and I loved it! Seeing you in my school’s hockey jersey was awesome! I just wanted to say that your enthusiasm for science helped push me into the STEM field and your shows help grow both my knowledge of and interest in science. Your amazing!!
I'm glad to see the moustachelessness!
I made it to your show and you did a fantastic job. My best friend enjoyed it and she had never watched any of your videos before. Thank you for sharing with us!
It was great to see you last night. Thanks for making your way up to the city that is entirely too small to be home to both an NHL team and an NFL team. Also, I drove in from Toronto. And yes, the universal healthcare is nice.
I’m so proud of you. Congratulations!
Hey Hank! You're show was the first time I got to hang out with my brothers since my wedding, and definitely the first time we've /done/ something together in a long time. I didn't think either would be all that interested when I first suggested it, but boy was I wrong. So not only was it a truly incredible show that has us laughing the whole time, but I will always remember it as a time that we really got to bond as siblings in surprising ways and share how you've influenced us growing. I'm the oldest and my youngest brother is seven years younger and lives four hours away. You and John have been an example for me to keep hope that maybe my brothers and I can be close again in the future, and on Thursday night you gave me exactly that. 🎃🧡
I was so excited to see you were coming to my university! Thank you for coming to humble Western NY :)
Hank! i was at the Syracuse show and it was incredible, genuinely thank you for sharing that part of yourself. my dad died in 2022 after having cancer for over 7 years, and honestly your discussion of chemo and radiation was very cathartic for me. my dad went through at least 10 different types of treatment, including various forms of chemo and a few bouts of radiation and it was so helpful for me to hear someone talk about it the way you did. my dad also tackled difficult things primarily through a combination of humor and scientific understanding, and i know he would have really appreciated your show. i certainly did.
always love to hear about your new adventures. I've been waiting since July to submit my application on the P4A perk, it would be brilliant to support the cause from my own hands this time round!
Thanks. I have three different types of cancer and people often tell me I have a good "attitude." Bull hockey! But when I visit my doctors I often act as the class clown and get them to laugh. It's who I am. It's hard to describe why I'm not morose so I don't even try and it's not like I'm happy to have three life-threatening diseases in addition to diabetes and other problems. On the other hand, I have not created a routine or a constant patter and I admire those who can accomplish those feats. So hats off to you, young man! Long may your freak flag fly!
I love that you had this fun little side quest!
When my son Jacob was doing chemo and a bone marrow trans plant, humor was the only thing that kept us close to same. His nurses would occasionally come in the find us doing the dialog from entire Bugs and Daffy cartoons. Much of the time it was some pretty dark humor. Unless you've been there, it's hard to understand.
Thanks for sharing that part of your lives, and I hope your son's recovery went well. ❤
I wish SO much that I could donate my bone marrow, but in all their calls for donations Canadian Blood Services didn't advertise that the cut-off age was 35. Unless they suddenly raise that age to 40 soon, I'll never get the chance now and I'm so frustrated.
Man a sit down vlogbrothers video is all i needed at this really tough and anxiety inducing time i fucking love you guys
I was at the show and it was bloody fantastic, me and the other people at my table had an amazing time and were laughing our asses off the whole time. Thank you so much for coming out to share your amazing humor it was truly amazing.
P.S. loved your work on Dimension 20 as the Fix
It's not a very fun time to be funny, but it is a very important time to be funny. I watched this in shelter and it took my mind off of everything that's going on around us for a few minutes, and that has lots of value, too. Looking forward to maybe seeing your special one day.
I think a lot of comedians starting out struggle to put together a solid five or ten minute set, but Hank jumps in with SEVENTY MINUTES. I can't even memorize a three minute script.
I loved seeing your show. I managed to snag a ticket last minute and it was a blast. I even got to visit my best friend so double fun. And visit my other best friend on the way home.
Thank you for the info on submitting nerdfighter art, I was looking for where to apply/find information literally yesterday.
I'm so glad you're feeling better and taking anti-relapse advice seriously. I'm also glad you decided to shave the mustache, but that's less important. 😊
Right?! Like, no offence Hank, but you cannot be allowed to have a moustache. No hard feelings, it’s just against the natural order of the universe 🙂
I loved the show last night! It was so awesome to see you in my hometown and I thought your routine was such an entertaining and engaging experience!
My fiancé and I loved your show in Buffalo last night! We had a blast we hope you enjoyed our lovely city!
The show was amazing! I really hope you film it!
I live in upstate NY and the fact that I couldn't make one of these shows breaks my heart, would love to see it recorded!
My parrot laughs. He has a nervous laugh, a laugh he does along with others, and sometimes a laugh at exactly the right beat of a video, before I have laughed. It is like he has learned what is funny to the flock. It's weird and amusing.
Aw I got so excited for a Hank tour and then was like wait as you started saying it'd be difficult. I am so proud of you for taking the time to listen to your body and do what's right for you and your family. We love the green brothers but we love them because you provide a good example of what we should all be doing. Existing as good people to ourselves and others. DFTBA and can't wait for P4A 2024!
I love how brave Hank is. Watching him makes me feel like I can handle bad things happening to me. Though I do wish he'd give himself a nice break.
Really glad to hear you want to record your set and release it somehow. I'd love to watch it!
I had the time of my life last night, thank you so much Hank!
My husband and I have been nerdfighters from the beginning! We are so excited and will see you at RIT! ❤
It was so cool to see you at RIT! It's awesome that you're feeling well enough to travel and speak, even if it's only for the Upstate NY micro-tour
You were incredible last night Hank!!!!!! You are really, truly funny and I feel very fortunate for joining you yesterday 😄
I will absolutely buy a “ticket” to download your show the moment you make it available. In the meantime, enjoy western and central New York!
I will enjoy coming to see your performance whenever that may be. Fight and be well you beautiful nerd idol! ❤
Lol I love the flow of this video. I'm so glad to see you do this and then listen to your doctor and start to step back from it also (for all the reasons you said).
‘Twas an honor to be randomly selected to be the 90s-music-know-it-all in the front row and witness you speedrun your career as a stand up comedian.
This sounds hilarious even without context.
I'm excited for you! Good for you for trying something new and showing you are far from an old dog.
I went to the Syracuse show and walked into the venue early looking for a bathroom, and upon learning that the venue wasn't open yet, Hank looked over at me from the stage and waved.
I waved back and headed elsewhere for my relief! It was a great show, Hank. It brought me and a friend I haven't seen in a while together again.
Oh no! Was i not supposed to be laughing at paintings? Yikes.
♡ thank you for these excellent thoughts!
I always donate to get the Nerdfighter art perk every year! Always fun to see what people have created and crafted. :)
Really enjoyed your show in Buffalo! Keep it up!
A+ Syracuse show, Hank! Such a fun end to my stressful week!
It was such a special thing to see yesterday! You were incredible and it was really cathartic to laugh about something so serious. My dad is in hospice, soon he wont be with us because of cancer and I know I'll find comfort in these laughs once again when it'll be hard to laugh at all.
Sending love 💚
Please give us a list of stand-up comedy to watch
Yes please that would be a fun vid
I'm glad to see you have recovered enough to not need your chemo era coping mechanisms, I've always loved silly doesn't matter comedy situations like Seinfeld or stand up comedy because of that ability to let me forget troubles for a time, I've very rarely ever been in a situation where I can't focus but I have had some hours or days In my life like that and I can barely fathom what that would feel like for weeks and months
I was at the show in Buffalo and had a great time. Thanks for doing the show despite the world right now.
You are great! No matter what you do. Just enjoy it🎉
Great quote, before cancer I was only broken in a little ways, I can relate quite well to that. Continue fellow survivor 😅🤘
I was at that show and it was great. Thank you so much for coming and making us laugh!
Also, your friend gave you bad food advice - there are so many delicious and unique things they should have recommended.
I saw your Buffalo show and it was so good. I would love to see you do more of them, but I also completely understand not doing so. I'm incredibly thankful that I got to the opportunity to go.
Hello from Buffalo! Sorry I missed you, you're one of the people I have always wanted to meet!
I'm sorry you're cancelling the tour, but it's great that you've gotten to perform it and you're recording it! And being in the place of not feeling compelled to tour is a part of your process; it's especially good that you're self-aware about being with your family being better than a goal you previously set! Praying for you on avoiding stress and being fulfilled in that, and it aiding your remission. Now here's to hoping I don't miss you announcing how you'll release your stand-up recording 🤞
I was at the show in Buffalo! It was a great set, and you did a great job of making look easy.
i hope you enjoyed your time in buffalo! i had a ticket but didnt know id be competing with the hockey season home opener for parking and never got a chance to get into the show. im very sure i missed something really swell
The RIT talk is about to start! Can't wait!
I love the holes people find themselves in thanks to TV and/or stress. This is an interesting turn!
I haven’t done it via chemo, but when I was in an anxiety-induced depression for three solid weeks a little bit back the show that weirdly got me through it was this Amazon show where Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear runs a farm. Weirdly his struggles with bureaucracy and public opinion stopping him from getting anything done spoke to what had kickstarted my whole spiral and it was oddly soothing. I ended up doing some research and now I know WAY MORE about commercial-ish farming than I expected.
Awwww man. I'm on the west coast and I really wish I had a way to see this show. I think stand up comic Hank would be fantastic to see.
Haha the jokes were great
Such a mood. I feel this in grief. After losing 5 family members in as many years (and 3 very close ones at that), it's hard to watch or enjoy much. Comedy and funny things has gotten me through a lot.
I'd be more than happy to pay for an OD link/download of that show. I'm sure it is funny, heartfelt and insightful as well as catchartic for everyone who has thier own beef with cancer. Having something liable to make you cry and instead finding a laugh in it is a very powerful thing.
Hank, we have no idea how or why you are coming to RIT but we are psyched!! I'll be there tomorrow in my Pizza John shirt!
Was at the show in Buffalo, you did a fantastic job, we all had a really good time! understandable not wanting to do more, it sounds like a lot when really you just want to be home lol.
So glad I got to make your show in Syracuse! It was incredibly fun and so cool to experience it with a bunch of IRL hardcore Nerdfighters.
Jay stand up with meaning is the stand-up I prefer the most. Since humor needs to connect with people's emotions it often transcends into transporting another persons perspective via humor into my mind. Enjoyful, mind blowing and educational.
I'm a big fan of classic comedy, favorites are the Smothers Brothers ❤. They are to me what the Mountain Goats are to John. I feel that I would have a more serious level of depression if it weren't for those guys. A couple months after you announced you had cancer, it was announced Tom had cancer. Lung cancer at 86. He's still alive (🤞 ), but I remember thinking " Two of my favorite brothers have cancer" 😭💔😭
Comedy is hard, and I admire anyone who does it whether as a standup, or physical comedy. Takes the right knack for it. I performed one time as a circus clown, one reason (of several) was to get out of my comfort zone. It was a blast and a half, and my admiration grew even bigger for the comedy field.
Go knock 'em dead Hank! 🎉
Hank, as a cancer survivor, I would love to see a video of your stand up show! 🤓❤️🩹
I love that space of trying out something and discovering: "I like this, I've learned a lot about it, I might even be good at it, but it doesn't have to be a permanent part of my identity or something I do forever." Some things are part of our lives for a season; maybe Hank's Cancer Season and his Comedy Season aligned for awhile. And hopefully Comedy Season might come back someday, even temporarily, but most importantly we hope Cancer Season never will.
All that said, I really hope this show gets filmed and there's a way for us to watch at some point, because this sounds like a great stand-up show as well as an important chapter in Hank's Journey of Meaning that nerdfighters would love to share.
I was at the show! You did great!
YOU WERE IN ROCHESTER AND I DIDN’T KNOW!? AND AT MY BROTHER’S COLLEGE NO LESS?! I AM SO UPSET!
that room looks really cosy
Yes please please please record your standup and make it available in some way, I would totally pay for that, as soon as I heard you were doing standup I've been dying to see it!!
My go-to shows when I'm sick are either QI or Letterkenny and/or Shoresy (the former for when I'm snoozing in and out of consciousness and the latter for when I'm far too uncomfortable to sleep and I'm resigned to being awake for a while). I recommend all three of these highly.
I respect this man so much
