- Two Scots draw the crowds to Carlisle.
Royal Scot and Scots Guardsman
plus other trains.
11 Feb 23
Locomotive Services and Saphos Trains ran The Lakelander from Rugby, with Royal Scot taking over from Preston. Behind it West Coast Railways and the railway Touring Co ran The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express from London Euston, with Scots Guardsman at the helm from Carnforth. The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express ran south via the settle & Carlisle Line whilst the Lakelander went around the Cumbrian Coast.
While LSL had arranged for their entire train to go to Upperby for servicing and turning, West Coast's stock stayed in Platform 3 while Scots Guardsman turned via London Road, Bog Junction and Currock Junction before being watered in High Wapping Sidings, adjacent to Carlisle Power signal Box. Thus I was able to take advantage of Guardsman on the old Goods Lines at Bog Junction and returning towards Citadel over the tightly curved Maryport & Carlisle line from Currock.
I also got shots of Scots Guardsman from different angles at High Wapping.
There were a lot of enthusiasts at the station today, especially when the passengers from the Lakelander were after photos etc of Scots Guardsman. It was well overcrowded on Platform 4 and to an extent on Platform 3. Thus a lot of people jostling to see around their neighbours. I did my best in the circumstances but was very frustrated, along with many others.
When it came to Royal Scot heading out, I chose to go to Currock for a long view from Currock Junction to the site of Cummersdale station.

thanks Les two Scots beautiful 👍
Glad you enjoyed
Awesome video again. I like the shots around Currock. I used to live there when I was very young, sure I remember the footbridge.
Thanks! The new footbridge bounces a little so I didn't go there - might have done if I could walk fast enough for Guardsman turning!
Thanks!
Thank you
Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.
Thanks, you too!
hi Les thanks again for the great video it was great to see the 2 steamers i thought it strange the first one went into platform 3 they always seem to use 1 and 2 and that final shot of the Royal Scot was really great into the beautiful country side please carry on the great work you do bringing us all the excitement of Carlisle and surrounding area look after yourself and please stay safe my friend
Thanks. The first Royal Scot went into Platform 4 and departed from 3. Scots Guardsman went in and out from 3. Platform two is a short bay for up to 4 cars of DMU
Excellent.
Thanks
Well Les, despite the crowds you did manage some incredible footage. Thank you.
Thanks David, in retrospect I managed to pull it off
Amazing ❤🚂❤
Thanks
Fabulous video
Thanks!
All excellent shots Les, really enjoyed is one.
Thanks!
Great stuff Leslie, Steve .
Thanks Steve
Well you certainly got about in Carlisle on this occasion! Great footage as always. Cheers Euan
Many thanks! Yes having a walk overcame some of the frustrations!
Nice render under....trying circumstances! Thanks Leslie.
Thanks Andy
Excellent video
Thanks
A really great video Les giving a complete overview of the day. The platforms were very crowded making it somewhat difficult to get the best pictures. Your out of station shots were also very good and I particularly liked the images from Currock of the Royal Scot leaving Carlisle along the Cumbrian Coast Line. Thanks and Best Wishes.
Thanks Stephen!
Les you keep delivering some fabulous videos. Loved seeing two lots of steam on the same day. Also the shots away from the crowds. Well done again Les
Thanks John
That's a nice view in the closing shots. Good idea to find that spot.
Thanks - it is a great vantage point yet still in the city!
Bom dia leslier lindo afoto vario trrein lindo gostei essa maria fumaça e lindo mesmo
Thanks!
Thats showing of now Leslie..having two of them!!. lol Great video, and what an amazing place you found for the final shot of her working hard. Love it.
Thanks Tim. Yes that final location gives a great long view.
Yes it is a good view and this video has a good shot of the train. I also went to the same place however I filmed it from a field so it is a slightly different angle. If you would like to see it, it is on my channel
Great video Les :)
Thanks!
Fabulous video Les
Thanks Michael
Knowing the area you got the sequences no one else did. Even the 2c55 didn’t spoil the sequence. Thanks for your dedication .
Thanks!
Fantastic video again Les, some awesome captures and shots away from citadal some shots there i did'nt recognise well done and the kettles picking up speed sounded great .
I must say you got about a bit there matey , and i see the kronospan was back on its old stomping ground 😂thanks for sharing Les your a star really enjoy your videos
stay safe a t b Syd👍
Thanks Syd. Fortunately most was a 10-15 minute walk from the station although I drove out to the final one.
Les, your video's are platinum, I love them, keep going Les
Thanks!
Hi Les, great shots of all the trains. I really like the shots of the steam engine as well, it looks awesome. Great work! 👍
Many thanks!
Les, I am a big fan of your video's and you are certainly a master of the craft. As some have said, you frequently get the shots that elude others. As someone born in Westmorland but living in Southern England I really enjoy the northern atmosphere which oozes from your productions. But. . . I must take issue with your criticism of others taking footage getting in the way. Everyone, photographer or not has the same entitlement to space on the platform to view trains. Some years ago I actually stopped taking photographs because I realised I wasn't actually getting to watch any trains because I was too busy with the camera. I have on occasion since being berated by photographers because I have bagged a spot from which to view trains to which they apparently feel entitled. Why should anyone be criticised because they choose to savour at the moment rather than record it. I do recognise your words were aimed at fellow photographers but I think it's still part of the wider debate.
Thanks. I wasn't alone in being upset at the antics on the day. Often you can predict where people will be, and I certainly make allowance for that, but the level of jostling was over the top.
That's a very fair comment Les. I'm certainly not condoning any kind of jostling or other irresponsible behaviour.
@@Tinman22ify I always try to be accommodating when taking video and it would be nice if more were like that. I see myself on here allowing others a clear view above my head and keeping behind the yellow line. It is true what you say about busy with the camera, you do miss out on the sense of the occasion when using a camera. When it is very crowded like this I sometimes make the crowd part of the event rather than trying to dodge everyone in the way.
Another aces video. A couple of champion steamers and a grand array of so many great trains and the TPE, Avanti, and Pride. A nice changing of locations and angles, too! Watching these while doing some involved DIY projects in the house, so being a bit less wordy- which may not be a bad thing. lol CHeers and thanks again. You are a pro!
Thanks Anthony
The Tesco would be a great photo arching around the bend. I was across the other side (not blocking anyone) :)
Platform 3 did look quieter! There are some great views available
@@LeslieGilpinRailways It was packed around the loco, so people jostle for photos so close up they barely see anything anyway.
Excellent stuff again Les. I notice that 46100 has a 5A (Crewe North) shedplate which is a bit strange because as far as I'm aware it was never a Crewe North engine.
Thanks! I suppose now being a Crewe loco, giving it a relevant shed code is seen as appropriate.
@@LeslieGilpinRailways yes good point Les. I saw it at Bristol a couple of years ago and it was the same then.
Well done Les, you got about that day, keeps you fit. The platform might have been crowded with photographers but look on the bright side, Transpennine didn't park their units on B & C roads and spoil the view.
Thanks Ian. Thats very true, the centre roads were free.
Hi Les Some great video there despite the massed hordes of 'enthusiasts'. As you know the area you can get better views from your local vantage points rather than the Station, and with out all the pushing and shoving that goes on whenever steam locos appear, it must be stressfull for the station staff too. As ever good stuff Les, keep up the good work. Thanks
Thanks Peter. I think I should have followed my first instinct to avoid the station. I'll try to remember next time!
Hello Les, something you may find of interest or you may already know. I have noticed a new diagram that travels when you are in bed, 1S04 BIRM INT - MOSSEND YARD. it's an overnight parcel delivery service run by VARAMIS RAIL. This service is pathed as a diesel ,leaves Birm 0010 hrs arrive Mossend 0641 hrs. Regards Ian.
Thanks Ian. I have noticed it before but not seen it.
It is a shame some do not seem aware of anyone else around them I always try to be accommodating and not spoil anyones view. The views away from the station more than made up for it Nice to see you on the platform before they arrived
Thanks!
Photograohy using mobiles phones has spoiled the hobby. All these people looking at the image at arms' length, getting into other peoples' view. If only the human eye could focus down to a few inches! That would resolve that problem. I was pleasantly surprised by the Currock location. It provided such an extended view of the departing train. [edited for spelling errors]
Thanks. I personally do use my mobile occasionally usually with a tripod. I notice the younger enthusiasts working that way. The Currock location is great
Great video as always, both the Scots drew quite the crowds! Shame it was spoilt by people standing in-front of everyone trying to get a shot
Thanks. I totally agree
@@LeslieGilpinRailways I did see them at Penrith, happy I made that decision as by the time I got to Carlisle it was mobbed!
Leslie, for how many years has 6V38, the log train, operated? Have there been gaps in recent years when it didn't?
What was the woman swearing at about 4:10 on about? Annoyed at railway enthusiasts being on the platforms?
Another quality video where you capture heaps of action. Very competently filmed!
As far as I know for over 20 years, but always via the Settle & Carlisle until October last year.
I didnt really notice swearing but I think she was berating her husband to keep their child under control.
Thanks for your kind words
Hi Les, I enjoyed the idea that you are more entitled to take videos than "the massed hordes crawling all over the platforms".
Entitled? Moi? No not at all. Its always good to see enthusiasts enjoying themselves. Usually I , with friends who are regulars, work our way around the crowds but on this occasion the common civilities of the photo line just seems beyond a few people. Those yellow lines on the platform for safety purposes do help define a photo line which usually works.I'd say the entitled ones are those who ignore them.
