- On tuesday 30th April we saw the 'Great Britain XII' charter train day 4 of 9, from Preston to Edinburgh via Shap and Beattock stop at Carlisle for an hour. It was hauled by a double head of LNER A4 no 60009 'Union of South Africa' and Black Five no 44871.
later that day this years first 'Dalesman' trip from York to Carlisle via the Settle line arrived (an hour late) hauled by LMS Princess Royal Class no 6201 'Princess Elizabeth'. - Zábava
Those Black 5's are the unsung hero's of British Locomotives ! :)
Thankyou for your comment. And they are still working well today doing charter trips.
When I had the pleasure of a trip on the Dalesman, it was being pulled by Galatea.
I definitely recommend it for those who haven't been yet, it's a lovely trip.
The MAGIC of steam

Superb Julian , a superb sight and sound with both tours in one day 👍
Thanks Steve - I wanted to see both tours but didn't fancy all the travelling like you do!

Cheers - Allan.
Thanks Allan - it was a good day.
Great too see and hear, Lizzie back in steam.
Thanks - it was the first time I have seen Princess Elizabeth on our tracks in Cumbria.
Excellent Julian, great shots from Carlisle, and you picked the right spots to be, well done.
Thanks Nige. Its hard at stations to get a decent view without others getting in the way - so I had to move a few times!
Wonderful, Julian.
Thanks Alan.
Nice to see 6201 back on the main line. You must have had a good day at Carlisle 😄

Just spotted myself at 12:01. Great video too.
Thanks. I'm in your film too - (3.33!)
Brilliant video
Thankyou - glad you appreciate my efforts.
Lovely!
Thank you Alan - makes a change not to be nearly frozen to death!
Hi Julian,
I really enjoyed your video thanks for posting! I like the fact that a lot of your engines have names of one sort or another, seems proper to me somehow.
Thanks - glad you liked the video. Like ships, we have named many of our locomotives since the days of Stephenson's Rocket. It continues to this day, and only recently I was in York for the naming of an electric loco after Sir William McAlpine (see the video 11 Jan 2019).
Nice trian
Thank you Keith - yes they are.
I wish I was there.
Wonderful video Julian, thumbs up :)
Thanks Simon.
Ha! Lol Simon says
Hola , hermoso vídeo. Que autonomía en kilómetros tiene una Locomotora como ésta sin volver a cargar agua ni carbón? ,gracias.
Thankyou. Both these train trips were over lines with a steep climb. On the 2nd train see here the trip from Settle to Carlisle was 115 km, and climbing about 200 metres. There were water stops at the beginning middle and end - ie about 65 km apart. Not sure how often the coal was refilled, but not half way.
@@JulianThurgood Gracias Julian, tu vídeo esta muy hermoso.

Ahh yes, electricity! Driving steam off the railway network since 1890! :p
