- 61306 'Mayflower' & 44871 hauling the Steam Dreams operated Cathedrals Express. Filmed at Gloucester, Cardiff Central, Newport, and Caldicot. Also included is a couple of freight workings filmed on the day.

How nice to see the steam engine on the run. My childhood and adolescence were spent around such engines in fifties and sixties of the previous century as my late uncle had been a Railway employee.
Later these were replaced by Diesel locomotives.
Yes, it is nice to see them working on Uk mainline. Same with me when a young lad down and round STJ, Newport, etc with steam & diesel South Wales...

Back in the mists of time they used Stanier black fives on the iron ore run from Bidston dock to Shotton steel works. I can still remember 55 years later hearing them on a still summer night getting underway and building up momentum. Replaced by 2 diesels which regularly failed to brake sufficiently to branch off to the steelworks. They had to give a blast on the horn to have the points switched back. Sometimes they were just too late and the locos derailed.

Good video Derek . I missed all of that due to work Mayflower always has trouble getting out of Gloucester . 47802 on the rear again . Some good freight workings too & 37 at Cardiff .

Gloucester seems to be a blackspot for steam engines trying to get traction lol There are numerous clips of engines struggling here , perhaps they should hire the RHHT train before the railtour arrives :-) Great video mate

Are the controls of the second engine linked to the 1st engine and controlled by the driver, and is the diesel loco just being pulled in the train?
Thank you. The controls of the two steam locomotives are separately worked, bar for braking, which the leading loco is in control of the whole train...
