Sassiness was off the charts in this video! Lone fox making a chair out of teddy bears, dissing quiet luxury, and colonial chic being uncomfortable. 😂 I almost choked on my coffee.
I have that chair from IKEA, but in the original style. It looked like a Sharpei afterward.
Maybe he did it because it's hard to get the slipcovers on without wrinkles in the first place. But you'd have to rearrange those pleats all the time!
Lone Fox is so creative and he did a wonderful job on his last rental with a freehand and approval from is late landlord. I also like some of his IKEA hacks.
As an artist, I must thank you for your comments on the subject. Art doesn’t have to match the couch! I also collect and my collection is varied. Purchase what makes you happy. And be sure to look into work by local artists. There is so much talent out there!

Sometimes the answer is match the couch (or paint or whatever) to the art, not buy art to match your couch.
I just realized my art does match my couch. But only by coincidence, because I am drawn to art and furniture in the same colour. And none of the art is from Winners.
Same with books! You don't match them to your wall color but your brain.

“ … if you can afford it. If you can’t afford it, just enjoy looking at it.” Such a quickly passed over comment but there’s such wisdom in this. We don’t need to possess a thing to appreciate it and get joy from it. Also the comment about not wrapping up good design advice into a trend … YESSS! Thank you. If it’s good design, it’s timeless. I’m way too sensitive to colour to ever follow trends in that department. But I do like to see how people are using colours. Sometimes it’s inspiring and pushes me a little outside of my comfort zone and I discover something I end up loving that I wouldn’t have otherwise. I just love unique interiors that are personal and creative or feel as easy as a great pair of worn in jeans on a very stylish person. I, personally, am happy to see traditional styles make a bit of a comeback. I love modern design, but I personally can’t live with it. A nod here and there, but it’s just not how I live. I love that both minimalism and maximalism are happening at the same time on the internet. It all inspires me. 😊
Trends are pure poison and turn people into sheep. I like grey and have been using it judiciously for DECADES. Consequently, it's rise in popularity on the back of all those makeover shows, was not welcomed by me.
Confession: I have two pieces of mirrored furniture in my house -- a console table in the living room and a small cabinet in my bedroom. I love them both. There!!! I feel much better!! 🤣🤣

Me too! Not into glam but have 2 mirrored chests in a very large living room that don't stand out.
IMO curated eclecticism feels like the default. If at all possible, a home should reflect the people who live there. Someone coming into our home would instantly know half a dozen things about what my husband and I find important. And we are honestly pretty selective about what is on display, neither of us enjoy dusting or clutter!

Yikes with the dusting. 👃😷 Try sanding hardwoods to bring them to a new glory! Even with removing everything from the room getting sanded, covering with sheets the things in other rooms, and constantly vacuuming, the dusting battle is real. Looking to the day when it's just my decor items that need an occasional dusting!
Agreed to the default assessment. I find peoples homes are less thematically singular than multiplicitous. That withstands the ebbs of trends so we don’t all have to go out and buy sh*t all the time, too
If this is "phoning it in" so you can take it easy for the holiday, you should do this more often! From this side of the screen its your charm and editing that makes the video fun to watch. In case you thought we could tell whether your content was easy for you to make or not, I think your years of expertise is worth watching, even if its now easy for you to do. It took you a lot of time and work to be good enough to make a video like this and call it easy. Have a relaxing holiday! Happy New year! xo
Among CZcams creators with integrity, there has been discussion about "reaction" videos as coasting on the work of others. The worst offenders look at a video someone else had shot and edited and go ooh--ah--thumbs up or thumbs down garnering hits--sometimes millions--without doing a commensurate amount of work.
However, in Nick's case, he's looked at a number of platforms and made extensive content in its own right about their lists and predictions. He's given a thoughtful, carefully curated review laced with his humour and charm. I wouldn't call that "dialing it in," but to say that reveals his somewhat self-deprecating modesty shining through.

i wish someone would speak about antiques and what they add to a space. I hear "vintage" all the time, but antiques are something else.

Antiques are just older vintage items. In another 20-30 years mid century furniture will be considered antiques

A shirt can be vintage, antique is a 1920's French buffet hutch. Please don't confuse the two. Sorry, but your comment just about made my head explode.
My mom had a house full & when I sold them after my parents passed I didn’t get half of what they paid. I did keep several pieces for my home. A particular antique secretary hutch was in her kitchen, now it’s in mine. My things are traditional but sometimes I do find it challenging to fit her pieces in. I will hold onto them as long as I’m here…but the next generation in my family won’t want them.😢
I agree with you about quiet luxury. I hate to see those blankets with the H on it or clothing with designer names on them. They should pay me for advertising their brand

As someone who cares about the beauty of their home, one thing that your videos have taught me is it's important to recognize trends not just to have the latest styles in your home; recognizing trends helps a person define their own personal style by helping them to differentiate between a particular facet of interior design that they like and will enjoy for years and years to come, and something they like now simply because they've been subconsciously influenced by media and stores heavily promoting it.
Your videos have helped me to define my own personal style, and I'm indebted to you for that. Keep up the awesome work!
As one local designer put it, look at the trends because they bring to mind a style that may have slipped your mind or fallen off your radar, and now that you’re seeing it “fresh” you may decide you like it to invest in it a bit-like nod towards it. But don’t immerse yourself in a trend. You’ll tire if it.
The best example presently is mid century modern. It’s a fine style. But it has been so dominant for so long now that people who’ve invested in it so heavily just have boring, predictable west elm homes. It would have been wiser to buy a piece or two but mix it with a few other pieces. Don’t dive into the deep end of the pool. Wade in at the shallow end. (The same is true of farmhouse. It has some timeless components, but when you go at it full speed, your house looks silly.)
@jpp7783 Exactly! Incorporate certain, non-permanent aspects of trends into your decor but be wary of making major, more permanent alterations to your home decor based on them.
Yes I agree too, I like his videos cuz they teach me about styles I appreciate but definitely would not have in my space and so he is helping me learn what I do and don't like 😊 I also think interior design is similar to your music style e.g. moody music, moody rooms, or maybe that's just me 😅 I like to think I am influencing my home to reflect my inner world with themes running through but each room a little bit different. Defo a maximalist but not crazy busy visually
Nick, when are you gonna do a “roast your fans homes, with love” addition? I know a bunch of us want to enter. Maybe consider it for the new year, always interesting to see viewers homes and their various taste.
I really appreciate that Nick doesn’t shy away from the important topics as they relate to design, such as classism, environmental issues, and language.

Thank you for addressing the annoying labels and Tom Ford coffee table books! I would be embarrassed to display a Tom Ford book! Can anyone think for themselves any more? I like fresh new approaches, but hate massed produced trends where every room is a cookie cutter duplicate of every other department/design/furniture store. I also appreciate you calling out the classism in Inherited quiet Luxury! Looking forward to 2024!

My flat in San Francisco is in an art deco building from 1936. I love it so much! My favorite thing is the fluted moldings around all the doors and windows. So beautiful that I used shades instead of any curtains so as to not cover up the.fluted moldings. There are also angled deco arches between rooms. Many of the art deco light fixtures are still there. The piece de resistance is the art deco bathroom. All original. Tile, toilet, pedestal sink, bathtub all from 1936 and all in good condition. Everyone who visits loves the bathroom. I even had a 75th birthday party for the bathroom with the tub full of iced champagne. 🍾😅
Crazy fun. I feel so fortunate to live in this beautiful space. Art Deco is just such a lovely style. Very underrated imo.

*Browns* . I'm definitely a neutral gal and I love brown in my textiles; tartan plaid, chocolate velvet, leather, suede and cozy throws. I always hated the "gray" aesthetic and the all white everything. Give me an earthy palette and I'm fabulously happy.

From early childhood to my current age of 64, when asked my favorite color I always responded “brown”. Though often met with a frown or even laughter, it’s rather pleasing to hear others love it too!
Haha Nick, you are so funny. I always get "offended" at least once when I watch your videos because of my personal design choices and I also feel validated and uplifted every time I watch your videos.
Re: nicks comments on quiet luxury- totally agree that the whole concept feels a bit focused on your financial means, however I would argue that being “classy” isn’t about financial means, but rather about your values, taste, and manners. Throughout most peoples lives, your spending power will fluctuate over the years- some times will be abundant while others will be lean, but what really determines class is your values. What do you value? How do you choose to treat others? How do you interact with the world? I see “quiet luxury” as a trend that makes us ask ourselves “how does my space reflect my values?” If framed in this context, I think it becomes a much more complex and interesting discussion.
If I go to someone’s house and see a sofa made out of teddy bears I will personally poke my eyeballs out 🤣🤣
I like pops of yellow with things like lemons in a really cool bowl, daffodils in a beautiful vase. Yellow tulips in another vase.

Art Deco is amazing! Toured a mansion in Chicago during a rainy day and it was decorated in beautiful art deco style. Spent HOURS (actually the guide was giving me weird looks for being there for so long) just exploring. So interesting.

Ps- I am Indian and watching people casually throw “colonial” around also gives me the ick. It feels like it erases the baggage that word is otherwise associated with, and makes it meaningless. I also “get it” but yeah.

I really value your recognition of how classism is present in much of the discourse in this field. It is rarely acknowledged. And kudos also, Nick, for calling out the careless references to colonialism. Great design sense, a social conscience and brutal honesty…a winning combo! ❤❤❤
YES. Thank you. I hate when people say they luuv the colonial style. Like, you mean you love the feeling of being surrounded by a history of violence, rape, plundering and genocide? Does that feel cozy to you?

It brings to mind a specific look, not a way of life or "oh no! Horrific things happened back then!" feels...
Now if someone actually discusses loving the way of life from back then, or makes reference sometime to the effect of us needing to go back to that time because it was such a cool time to be alive, etc, that's a totally different thing.
People need to stop being so touchy and ready to be offended by things that explain things and are specific words that mean specific things (like in the context of styles of houses and furniture) without anyone meaning anything offensive by what they're saying.
Hi Nick, happy New Year! Every time I hear that “brown is back”, I have an attack of PTSD. Memories of ‘70s brown, rust, and gold haunt me, still. Those were my formative years in design, and I’m happy to say I managed to move beyond them. That being said, I recently gave my daughter and son-in-law, who live in Charlotte (more of Canada’s brain drain) my parents’ circa 1980 brown velvet sofabed and matching chair with their gathered fabric detail along the arms and back, and they’re fabulous. They had been in storage for 23 years. I don’t recall brown and velvet ever going together back in the day, but, here it is! The heavy cotton velvet has held up beautifully, and always had a “come sleep on me” allure that is still impossible to resist. Further, it satisfies the current novelty fabric trend. My late father, furniture salesman extraordinaire (remember the sell ”orange is Canadian sunset”?), always seemed to be ahead of the trends - even by 44 years! Thank you for your good counsel, delightful wit, and entertaining (and informative) content. All the best in 2024, to the best designer in the country🇨🇦❤️
The 1970's brown and orange were traumatic, but remember the institutional green color that was in public schools left over from I don't know when the 40's? That color green made me nauseous for years.
@@anneporter123, What WAS that? It was everywhere…when it wasn’t a bilious pink. There was an intense purply-pink colour in the late ‘50s that was featured a lot in children’s toys and books, and, I recall, more generally in advertising. Crayola even had a crayon that colour. It, quite literally, made me nauseous, particularly when I was ill. Thinking about it now is sending me to my Maalox!
@@RagingCanuck I had a parttime job when I was 16 in an office of a department store that was that Pepto Bismal pink. I had a headache everyday. No one could ever tell me that color doesn't effect us.

@@ashleys4652 Avacado green was a very trendy and omnipresent 1970s colour. Anne was referring to a much paler, blue-y, not so yellowish green that was the wall colour in every medical facility. Even the enamel housings of medical equipment was that green. It was called, initially, “spinach green” when it was created by a surgeon in San Francisco in 1914 to be more soothing for the eye than white, which was being used for everything in hospitals. The contrast between the bright red of fresh blood and bright white of hospital linens and walls was thought to be too glaring. To get an idea of this colour, know that Martha Stewart supposedly reimagined it as “seagrass”, but my colour memory doesn’t really equate the two. Hospital green was far more insipid. I think it’s still used in hospital gowns. I do remember a kind of pale Pepto bismal pink (“drunk-tank pink”) being used in institutional settings, such as jails and psychiatric wards, because it was thought to temporarily reduce aggression. I seem to recall it gracing the walls of my kindergarten room in 1960, but I think it was our sadistic teacher who grabbed the boys by their ears and wouldn’t let us use the washroom who kept us in line, not the wall colour.

I shut that vid down as soon as it was a commercial for his products. But the first 2 minutes that I watched included a loving nod to brown. I would LOVE to watch Nick's reaction to that video.
You should do a video on how to design around the grey wash floors. If we’re stuck with them, how do we make the best of them. Asking for a friend.

As a mom I think curve edges are good for kids and adults with waist I also think it comes from feng shui.
Also thank you for being realistic and I love art deco I live in a 1913 apartment so it makes sense I have mixed old with new for a while now .. but with the big surge of people on CZcams styling and talking about home style, plus making things definitely has been inspiring 🪷🪷🪷Happy New year to you and yours ❤
Yes, curved edges of countertops could prevent serious injuries!
Indeed. As a clumsy person, I find curved edges for a marble countertop to simply be common sense design.
As a Gen Xer, I’m happy to see a return of wood paneled walls. Done properly, this look is aesthetic and simply cozy. Much potential. Your video showcased a lot of browns that were Moroccan in style, to me, that is. I love this look. Hard to do but it’s beautiful when done thoughtfully.
I'm gen z and i honestly frikkin love them. I also love homes that just have the brown trim everywhere, I so prefer it over that bright white ass trim. I love deep saturated jewel tones for walls and dark wood furniture with gold and bronze fixtures, am also a bit of a slut for some brown wainscoting or painted molding. So the brown trim and paneling is just so 😙👌 for my style.
In other words....everything is in style as long as you like it.
I think colonial has stuck around as a decorating style because people in NE USA like to buy houses that are classic and colonial and then they are kind of stuck with using colonial decor on the inside. A lot of houses are so distinctive that you have to go with it I think. Things like a townhouse in Brooklyn give you more leeway for going modern or Scandi or Japande. I'd love a Frank Lloyd Wright house but wow that would be a real challenge to keep authentic.
I love the term Grandpa Chic that’s under the traditional umbrella. My master bedroom is going for that look. Kinda like a Ralph Lauren Home from the 90’s vibe and I LOVE it. So cozy and comfy and hard to leave.
😊Love masculine leaning trends that give a nod toward a sense of tradition, history & continuity. Grandpa Chic sounds like a delightful proposition...

❤Ralph Lauren's country chic certainly holds appeal for me. He knows how to capture a glimpse of glorified Americana. Grew up in a working class rural suburb with folks who were 🐴horse mad. Used to clean stalls to ride for free. We did more 🐎trail riding & barrel racing.
Although my parents loved horse racing & befriended plenty of owners as well as trainers in their day. Used to know the names of all the jockeys. That was as close as I ever got to 🏅prized thoroughbreds.
🤔My exposure to hunts, show jumping, & dressage came later in life. These enormous equines were GIANT BEASTS compared to the mustangs & paints of youth.
Love his elegant equestrian style decor. Although by virtue of lowly birth, I'm more likely to gravitate toward Cali cowboy chic🤠 vs fussy East Coast formality.
🤫Do like the earthy textures like stone, leather, wood, tweed, houndstooth, flannel, corduroy, denim, buffalo check that he favors. Plus, he cleverly merges it with some highly feminine chinoiserie for a rustic elegance. ⚖️One seems to balance out the other.

On target as usual Nick. I think “good design” should be the philosophy that underpins all living environment choices. We long for pleasant homes where we feel content and peaceful.
Has art deco really ever been out? You can see some versions of it reappearing in almost every decade. Because it is just so beautiful. Love your videos.
Yeah, in the 60s and 70s especially. There was also 30s Art Moderne, like Deco but less busy and more curvilinear, that showed up later.
Also, Art Nouveau to some extent. Nick actually showed an example among the Art Deco images.
Oh heck, I just miss my art deco house. I just keep whining about it, I'm sorry. I had a choice to make, stay in an area full of art deco homes as danger was moving into the area in every direction or get out. Since I couldn't take my house with me I am now in a mid-century modern box. Ugh.
Really gorgeous Art Deco and Art Nuevo are only "out of style" if you don't like them and most of all: cannot afford them. I'd need about $300K to really pull off an Art Deco interior worth having. It's just expensive as heck to do it right.
@@jeanvignes Do you mean with vintage originals? The furniture would be so hard to source, especially upholstered.
I love vintage brass. When we moved into our home in 2010, we changed practically all of our hardware to antique brass, from shiny brass. To me, it's a timeless metallic.

I like that you are so free with different designs,spaces, colors, etc. I have never been a fan of designers who tout the flavor of the day kind of interior space. You give us the idea that it is okay to use what you have and with maybe a thought to a new way of using color, materials, and styles. I want my home to reflect me and not a designer’s idea of what I should like at any given moment. Thank you. As just an aside, I don’t care if I never see another grey ANYTHING. 🤗

lol on the metals. 3 years ago we moved into a space that was probably designed 2 years previously, the metals were all 'cool' and looked out of style. I went ahead with a mixed metals theme and warmed it up by adding some copper and brass, but my thought was 'wait for it, the out of style chrome will be back in.' And here we are.
Nick I'm so glad you put out these videos because you are helping a lot of people save money, time and effort by not chasing short lived trends. I was a in the interior design business once and I always thought good design never goes out of fashion and Art Deco is a case in point. Luxury is so subjective, luxury can be upgrading to Godiva from Hersheys, luxury can be changing out all your cotton bedding for linen. Business class instead of coach/economy. LOL I like the idea of deciding what is luxurious to one's self, go for That!, and not let others dictate ''Luxury'' Great Chat looking forward to the New Year,. !!!
btw, I hate sofas, couches, lounge suites, etc. Luxury to me is 6 large overstuffed high-back chairs around a circular coffee table and a fireplace in the 7th seat of the circle. warm paneled walls lined with bookshelves crammed to collapse with tomes of art, design, architecture of far away lands, artists and designers that create to make our world a beautiful place to be, oh yeah, have you seen my library here? not enough room for the chairs because the drawing table and media centre have eaten up the space. LOL Thanks Nick for always spillin' the T on what's what in Design. We truly appreciate your candor.

Just want to express appreciation for your tangent about classism regarding luxury design. I've been in poverty my whole life and it's only now that my business is starting to take off a bit that I can live comfortably AND buy some nice furniture pieces, although they still aren't 'luxury', (in fact a lot of it is Victorian/traditional but I've always been a fiend for antiques and second-hand goods with more character). Anyway, having come from such a background I also get frustrated at people being shamed for being 'out of style' pretty much in any capacity, but calling 'luxury' a TREND is frankly ridiculous and insulting.
Facts. Luxury has always been trendy 😂 never seen a rich person called "out of style". Perhaps "modest, classic, eccentric, flambouyant, avant garde" if they don't follow trends. But never out of style 😂
@@Pomagranite167 Indeed and if the rich person happens to be famous they're also the ones who get to decide the trends, whether it be intentionally or just because people will always do things simply because someone they admire did it first. We have white wedding dresses because of Queen Victoria.
Loved this one! I’ve been hanging on to a vintage 1930’s art deco armchair I bought in the 1980’s, which I’m dying to reupholster in (white? royal blue? emerald green?) velvet, to go with my husband’s grandparents’ super modern 1960’s white Colorado marble coffee table with custom-made wrought iron arched legs. Delicious!

That traditional/ Victorian style and mood: I'm absolutely feeling this. I have started learning how to embroider, because I want to incorporate more handmade details into my home, and one of the easiest ways that I can think to do so is to embellish a little bit on stuff like table linens or having pretty linen hand towels with appliques... that sort of thing. But I'm still a "must have place/purpose or get out of my house!" type of Mom/home owner 😅

I'm just going to say that I like what I like, regardless of what's "trendy." And my "style" is so personal that I had to come up with a name for it because it's not this, or that, or the other thing. But I certainly appreciate, for the entertainment value, hearing what others consider "in" at the moment. Thanks, Nick!

If terracotta really is back as a color, I would lump it with the brown and/or bold color trends - they're basically the same thing: dark, earth tones. 1970s but more sophisticated. Medium wood is way overdue. I've always leaned towards teak, natural cherry, medium oak - because they are more forgiving of dust, crumbs and pet hair. I remember someone who did a trendy dark cherry floor 20 years ago, and told everyone not to follow suit because it always appeared filthy even right after cleaning.
Terra cotta colours have always been my go to.
Thanks for another great video, Nick. I love the feeing I’m on course with my new house. I splurged on my kitchen done by Cucina Veneta so most rest of the place is still extremely quiet luxury pieces from IKEA. 😂 The pop in my living room is a bright purple sofa that was supposed to be a temporary placeholder but it is the most gorgeous comfortable sofa I’ve ever had so it’s now staying. My home is kinda like me, built for comfort and everything is paid for which makes it even more comfy and easy to sleep at night. Have a wonderful and prosperous New Year.
Hi Nick! This one is a hard one for me...ugh! Every example of these so-called trends were actually things that have always been around and had mixes of several "styles" of furnishings, which just feels like these magazines are looking for "clicks", meaning sales...lol! It makes me realize that I take interior design to mean collecting the things one loves and making them all sing together. I prefer to not think of everything as a "trend" but more about new ideas and finding ways to express one's own creativity, not limiting oneself to following the "rules", as if trying to put a name on a certain set of design elements from a box. Interior design is truly art to me which is limitless. Starting with good bones makes the possibilities limitless and allows any room to always evolve, just like our lives are always evolving, not stagnant. When you see something you love then find a way to incorporate it into your home. I think your segment on "quiet luxury" said it best - invest in quality ALWAYS!! That comes in so many ways that everyone can find something that makes them feel spoiled!! Thx again for another interesting chat!🤩
