After a short studio album hiatus, Japan's Melt-Banana is back with their most exciting, dynamic, joyous, and detailed album to date. I actually think it's their best!
What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
candy gun is literally one of the hypest openers ever
i lost my shit when i heard the first breakdown
The beat is catchy but the vocals are ugly asf.
Let me sum this up for you.
Amazing Band, Awesome Album, Crazy Interesting sound.
If you don't like the singer, that fucking sucks for you.
Righto Balbo perfect explanation
Singer's vocals are the cherry on the cake's top!
Anthony. *THAAAAANK* you for turning me on to this band. They are *incredible*.
exactly the same here!, didn't know them a few months back and now i bought tickets to see them live next June in the Netherlands!
I'm seeing them in Norwich this May! S'gonna be good :D
most of their live videos are really awesome!
Hahaha, i love this band too. If you like this you should listen to Igorrr, just sayin'.
Alex Fox Yeah igorrr is awesome!
and you're a fantastically perceptive human being who's loving, caring, and open-minded.
Thank you :)
Awww
I love how he called he "smile-inducing", I haven't had an album make me smile this much in a very long time. It's like it's always on the brink of spinning out of control and flying off in so many directions but somehow manages to hold itself together continuously through every blazing transition, just an incredible style, possibly the coolest shit I've heard all year.
I enjoyed that dig at the 1975 WAY more than I should have :P
referring to them as "rock" music is a punchline in its own right
Wait people actually think The 1975 is rock what the fu-
I love how giddy and excited Anthony gets when reviewing stuff he likes
All the lyrics are in english? No way
zero is the lowest point of the album? please
good review tho
So hyped to see Melt-Banana and Igorrr in September. Good to see that you agree this one is their best. Hopefully whatever they release next will live up to the feelings this album provides.
Bruh I really wish I could go to that
where are you seeing them? I'm seeing them in September, too!
I just got back from the show in salt lake@@m00py1
My issue with CtE isn't that they're not a good "rock" band. My issue is that they're not--to use a word you used--odd enough for me. I'm not begging them to go avant or anything, but I don't think they take enough risks to stand out as a unique band to me. On top of it, I don't even think a lot of their songs are that catchy. Though the 1975 may be pretty sweet on the ears, at least their hooks are infectious.
This album is 10,000x better live and it's already fucking amazing
do u know any similar or edgier albums?
this band will never be mainstream... also you did yasukos voice so perfectly and surprisingly i almost choked on my coffee
This album still blows my mind.
This may be Melt-Banana's best album, but it's certainly the most accessible I've heard from them. The entire thing sounds really like one album and I don't want to keep saying what you've been saying but I agree that it's really well put together. They've managed to straddle the line between experimental and being easier listening than their previous work. A little towards the end of the album, it got a little monotonous but Zero was super interesting! I'll be listening to it a bunch more times.
This is still prob the most unique thing I've ever heard. The guitar alone is insane, it's basically another instrument entirely. Absolutely bonkers and incredible. I think this is my favorite thing they've done because their previous albums are VERY short and noisy... almost grind-esque (without the darkness)...this kinda takes that and puts them in these amazing pop structures.
Free the bee, Melthony Banantano
After all these years I agree that Fetch is a sonic sequel to Cell-Scape (Bambi's Dilemma was a messy spin-off or step aside). Both are great albums, but Fetch is so intricate, sophisticated and-simultaneously-intriguing and engaging, it never ceases to amaze and entertain every time you listen to it, it has so many delightful moments, just like Ichiro Agata's solo works - check his Tzadik's 2004 "Spike" album for instance). People have really been sleeping on this record, honestly, smh.
Thanks for this review, i had mixed emotions, but after giving a better ear, i fucking love this album man
cant believe u let earl use ur thumbnail as the album cover to some rap songs
Saw them live last night. A force to be reckoned with. One of the most intense two person acts I've ever seen.
Jacob Frisenda at the backbooth in orlando? im pretty sure i saw you there. What an amazing show.
Dylan Shaw yeah I was there. in the solo jazz cup shirt and banana shorts lol
Jacob Frisenda
Dope. Saw them in Tampa. It was sexy.
+Jacob Frisenda You should check out a 2 piece from Melbourne called Over-reactor. I suggest the song "Best of Worst" if you do. Your comment just reminded me of them is all.
PERFECT

Cell-Scape...one of the best records e-v-e-r! Great to see you reviewing this one here!
It's a fucking fantastic album!
if the 1975 was classified as post-avant jazzcore, i don't think they'd still be appealing to me.
JAYSOOOOOOON DERUUUUULOOOOOOOO
Ooh watcha sayyyyy
someone should make a compilation of all Anthony's 8+ rated album videos
He did that already.
Before March 22 2014? Can you link it?
evander miller His loved list is all the albums he's reviewed in a certain year that got 8's and above.
oh cheers!
enjoy! have fun with cell-scape!

I like the year order of the replies
Either way. I was just bustin' some balls on the 1975 thing. I obviously dig on "Chocolate." :-P
OK, but what does any of that have to do with me? I listened to the 1975, found some songs to be catchy, but found most of it to be too squeaky clean, basic, and unexciting for me. How does that add up to pre-concieved since I came to my conclusion after giving them a listen? I hadn't even heard of them until I caught some suggestions via Twitter / YC comments. *shrugs*
Don’t shy away from the lyricism aswell, there’s a lot of meaning behind them and so many great metaphors used
Yasuko doesn't get enough credit as the awesome vocalist she is. Her flow and delivery is amazing. She even yaps in english, which is no piece of cake for non english speakers
u got me into them, bb.
Melt Banana is still around?
This is glorious news!
Whoever edited this must be a part of Melt Banana.
was not expecting such a high score! I agree with almost everything you say here... even though I don't think this is just as good as Cell-scape, this is one of my favourite albums this year
FLIPPER!!!!
Man, hearing my first Melt Banana song Iquana In Trouble, was such a ground breaking moment for me; anyway, that was my first foray into the japanese noise-rock scene, which has more depth than one might expect.
i hope you dig itttttt!
i thought zero the closing was the best song ever. i loved the surprise change
I haven't listened to Melt-Banana before seeing this review. I'm really liking this album. It's like Melt-Banana is the louder older sibling of Deerhoof in a way. Good review as always.
yep
hell yes.
A life-long interest in the music of the bands King Crimson and the Dead Kennedys drew me to Melt Banana. I hope they get that rumoured new album out next year, they are truly phenomenal.
Totally agree. I just saw them live in Boston yesterday, they were incredible, the energy is just amazing.
hopefully, your ears never bleed!
Not gonna lie. After nearly six years this is still my fav album of 2013 and one of my fav rock albums of all time. My only issue with it is that I wish it was longer.
Awesome album, Cell-Scape is best though.
I agree that cell scape is better. "Shield For Your Eyes" and "If it's the Deep Sea" are just amazing

FLIPPER RULES! (it would be a great classic review)
Flipper is like sticking your head in a river of glue, and letting it flow through your brain. So good.

No Mean Girls references.
man, i really like that 1975 album. and i still enjoy melt banana.
Melt banana is pure love XD
This comment section isn’t so bad
i was just bustin' balls, bb.
Don't forget their 2009 live album, Melt-Banana Lite: LIVE ver.0.0
Really awesome stuff.
It was damn apparent you were excited about this review from the outset - as was I! I am so fucking stoked you did this much awaited abbumm! Cheers, yo.
Never heard of these dudes before this. Just listened to this record, and Holy. Shit.
I saw them in November 2005 (there's a badly recorded video on my account 😅) and at the end of the set someone who was sitting on the stage (it was a tiny club) flipped a random switch in an attempt to get them to do an encore. And the most piercing sound came out at full blast out of the speakers prompting everyone to cover their ears. The guy turned it off, waited..... And flipped it again 😂 unfortunately I don't think we got an encore but it was a pretty funny story. Best birthday ever.
Thanks for this review! Had completely forgotten all about Melt Banana. Really enjoying what I've heard of this album.
haven't heard them. i'll need to look those up.
Thanks for including this band on the top albums of the decade! Didn't know the band's existence until that video so, thanks so much. As a rookie music lover, I owe you a lot!
I Love the album! Sounds like something from a new dimension.
I wish this video were actually a review of Flipper..
Flipper!!!!
Melt Banana fans may also enjoy Marnie Stern, pretty epic stuff, less noisy but frentic as well. (and of course lightning bolt)
I just learned about Melt Banana. I agree with you that this is a special band. I love Lo-Fi, but hearing the more Hi-Fi records really makes me wish they would redo all their earlier Lo-Fi records as Hi-Fi... Nice review. I need more music like this, recommendations?
thanks again for this recommendation. still loving this album.
that was my sarcastic point. there's no chance Melt Banana will ever play the VMAs and you won't hear Lightning Bolt on top 40 radio stations.
anyway Anthony's right if you love a band you should support them and make sure they succeed, not want to hoard their music all to yourself. ESPECIALLY for the nichey noisy stuff like this that only a select few will appreciate.
The Wyld - Preface. From last year but they deserve waaaaaay more exposure.
It's really cool to see a young African American music reviewer doing so well! Keep up the good work, Anthony!
So glad these guys are back. Fuckin cool band. Japan has so many weird, creative bands, love it.
i thought i was as well until the album basically left me cold. :-S
*Eyes can't focus on Anthony and what he's sayin cuz Flipper*
*Tried to focus*
*Still can't cuz flipper*
Your Yasuko impression is top notch.
Give this guy a TV show already!
I love Melt Banana but at first like with Autechre's Exai earlier this year at first I didn't really know what to think, but after giving it some time it really dug into me. So many layers, incredibly bullish and confident but never dreary.
Reminds me of older times when you'd organize live track reviews, and I'd given a melt-banana song to review. I had no idea they had a new album out and this 9 makes me want to check it out badly, thanks for this great review!
yeahhhhhhh
I don't tend to watch album reviews but I really enjoy your channel. I discovered this after discovery Melt-Banana. Great group and I'm looking forward to discovering more.
I don't really think CtE is too odd to be classified as a rock band. In face, I don't think the 1975 is either given that there are numerous forms of rock music these days. There are more styles of rock than there are colors in the rainbow. CtE embraces a myriad of different styles, and the 1975 obviously go for more of a pop blend. I don't really see how you can come to the conclusion that I care two much about genres given two instances of my usage of the word "ROCK".
WHERE HAS THIS BEEN ALL MY LIFE
My soundtrack album 2k17
Melt-Banana is my favorite band, and honestly this is their best work. Im seeing them live on Halloween in Philly with some buddies. SO EXCITE
Do a track review of the new Yamantaka//Sonic Titan singles.
You mysteriously didn't review their debut which I thought was strange, it would seem up your ally
OHHH i love Midori... that's the only record i haven't heard from them... but all the others are soo good..
Seeing them tomorrow with Melvins and Napalm Death
Awesome review! I'd give it a 9 too! For your information Anthony, on Fetch, the drumming is live! The band said it was more easy to do so than sequenced drumming! I cannot say who did the drumming though ...
I hope this album is on the best albums of 2010s
It was 😭😍
MonoStation90 I know!!! I made me happy:)
Left Lane Cruiser's "Rock Them Back To Hell" and Anna Calvi's "One Breath".
a saturday review? it's gonna be a good day
someone online turned me onto them, and i just so happened to stumble across this review. gonna check it out
Im a new fan, I love your taste in music. melt banana is awesome, I havnt heard then in a long time, awesome review, going to check out this album now(i already know ill love it, I dont think melt banana even made a bad song)
You've helped ratchet me up another notch on the excited scale, looking forward to Oct. 24 in Milwaukee. I am still a bit concerned that they are touring as a 2-piece now, but if anyone can pull it off, its Yako and Agata.
This album is so goooood.
Wow! I cannot wait to get this album! In the past few months a friend of mine stated talking to me about this band and then I found they had some music at a local Punk record shop and picked up their album Charlie.
I loved it, and I am excited that they have something new out now.
listening to this album was a very weird experience. Somehow painful and enjoyable at the same time. I came out liking it but i can see why people get turned away after 1 song.
I gave them a listen. It's very unique super fast grindcore with pop/electro influence. Also the vocals are very interesting upbeat and totally like Japanese Anime girl singing. I can see why this album got a 9 since Anthony is into more of the music that blend noise dispersion/futuristic/dirty sounds together since he gave Death grips a 10. Most of the sounds are distorted but as a whole it fits so well. :)
I used to download mp3's of this band in the late 90's. My friends owned their LP's too. If you like this band you would like tons of other cazy grindcore and crust punk, powerviolence, noise bands.
Get ready for the next album
ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh
