Saying Goodbye to Some Beloved Animals in My Giant Rainforest Vivarium

  • My giant cloud rainforest vivarium, Pantdora, has been constantly transforming since its creation. The plants, fungi, and animals are involved in an interdependent, never-ending biological cycle. But, after watching the animals in the vivarium live out their lives over time, it becomes hard to say goodbye to them when they die. A new season brings new life to the ecosystem, and it was a bitter sweet reality to learn, as we say goodbye to some Pantdoran OG's in the rainforest, but not without a surprise Easter egg. Hope you enjoy Season 2, Episode 1 of my Ecosystem Vivarium Series. Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution.

I had animals escaping their enclosures, it's not so shocking and jaw dropping. This tank had animals dying before, some are being eaten with some funny music on a background, so it's not that big either. One mantis is being eaten is fine, another one is dead is huge drama, but they're the same... idk, I'm not a fan of dramatic content in general. I usually watch based on my actual interests. Have thought pretty deep on this, if they're in plague proportions in visible sight, then like the millipedes, what you don't see would really shock a person as to their full numbers.
      Hate to say, but maybe with them, perhaps a type of chemical called "Flatworm Exit" that's used in marine reef tanks, but not sure what it would do to ants or other insects. It would be best to experiment on each and everything in the system to see what dies and what doesn't.
      It's really true though, somehow the conditions have become right and I think by their actions of just crawling through; both of them - over time could cause disastrous results one would find hard to notice staring at it every day and not noticing subtle differences or changes. Or maybe it's already noticed in the form of the ants being already infested with parasites or mites now. That thing was covered. Being in a closed system like that, toxin buildup wouldn't take a very long time. Wish I had better answer. Salt? That would buildup to kill the plants is the only thing.
      I think he should seal every part of it off, even the cracks with plastic and just heat things up with steam for 5 days where nothing inside can possibly be alive and then start over with a fresh canvas. Also throwing the dirt out or sterilizing it as well. Massive project but it's a massive undertaking he's trying to achieve and with flatworms and millipedes, it's not going to last forever or have that "balance" he wants.

      @@carolsdarksarcasm4223 Am hoping he reads this too because I find these animals extremely fascinating. A product they use called Safeguard or its isolated chemical Fenbendazole should be explored. Am always a "no chemical" person, preferring in reef tank systems (or any biome) to use natural biological control but extreme problems can call for extreme measures.
      Might be found in local vets or if lucky and researched enough, in it's pure powder form where maybe it could be lightly sprinkled after using it in a "test tank" that mimics the big one (including most inhabitants as display for test but is smaller) but it kills all different kinds of parasitic worms in dogs and other animals. Could be worth a shot to save the big display before it's too far gone with pests where a restart is required.
      All it should take is one flatworm to touch it, and that in itself might be enough. The problem is, the biggest problem, is the toxins they have even when dead and the slime they leave behind. That buildup from so many is going to "crash" the system. He should be manually pulling them on sight despite aversion to "worms" lol. At this point anyone can see it's necessary.
      A "tank crash" is a term we use in saltwater or reef tanks to describe not a tank crashing and falling to the ground, but rather, the whole ecosystem crashes - usually very fast too. One thing dies, hits the next one, hits the next one, creating a massive chain reaction, so on and so on, and in a half hour if you're not paying attention, you're whole entire 30yr old reef tank you grew out from fingernail size pieces and is suddenly nothing but primordial milky soup and bone white skeletons. That's a crash.
      Hope that doesn't happen to this tank but it's in trouble; that is for sure.

I can also imagine the Gymnopilus species are likely fighting amongst themselves and the Schizophyllum commune and various other possible wood saprotrophs living in the stump over area and nutrients, which is something you cannot see but is still notable through effects such as the disappearance of new fruiting bodies of some of these fungi from the stump for extended periods, which can also be attributed to the levels of resources left in the stump over longer periods of time and various other factors. There is essentially an unseen game of strategy playing out amongst the fungi in Pantdora.;

    Didn't think that your mini-rainforest-series, that I freshly discovered, would get so close to me... but I definitely feel you about the mantis !
    I had the great pleasure of finding a Mantis in our garden (middle Europe, I think it's mainly "Mantis religiosa"), that was in the middle of the process of laying her egg sack !! I couldn't belive my eyes that I was so lucky to catch that moment personally ! 🥰 and then I finally knew what these strange white structures were, that I had already found randomly again and again in the garden: Mantis-egg-sacks ! 😁 I thought it was some kind of cocoon, but now I know better 😆
    and I was a bit shocked to learn about Mantis that after laying the eggs, it will soon be over for them and if not, then their life span of only 1 year will end anyhow 😢 very sad to hear that they only live that short... the more merry when I find new Mantis in the following year, hiding in the garden, partially 2-3 at the same time (hidden on different places of course). So I don't know why, but I'm glad that our garden has been blessed to be chosen for these rare insects 😊and I'm already curious, what will come out of the final package of your Green Reaper ! 🤩
    oh.... and speaking of rare insects: last year our "raised bed" in the garden got inherited by 'scoliid wasps' (should be "Megascolia maculata"), that were swarming all around during day time, so we better kept some respect distance - but in the late evening, when they were resting, we could harvest our vegetables, that were as huge and fabulous as never before ! I guess these wasps helped with lice and other small insects that were consuming the plants the year before ?...

    This was the story of a cricket named Stanley
    Stanley lived in a terrarium in a big building where he was filmed by AntsCanada CZcams channel.
    Cricket Stanley's life was simple.
    He walked along the vines and ate some leaves.
    This is what Stanley did every day, of every month, of every year
    And although others might have considered it soul-rending, Stanley relished every moment that he got a chance to eat some leaves, as though he had been made exactly for this.
    And Stanley was happy.
    And then one day, something very peculiar happened, something that would forever change Stanley, something he would never quite forget.
    He had been walking along a vine, when he realized that nature has its own plans on his life.
    Never in all of his weeks at the terrarium has this happened, this strange thought never came to him.
    Something was very clearly wrong.
    Shocked, frozen solid, Stanley found himself unable to move for the longest time.
    But as he came to his wits and regained his senses, Stanley left his now empty husk and went on a new adventure as a part of an ecosystem he was already in.

    The snails might have been either eating or out-competing the flatworms. I put a snail and a couple worms in a seperate enclosure, and the worms were gone in a day. Can't be sure if the snail ate them, or if the worms escaped.

      Can a female mantis lay the egg sac even if she hasn't mated?

      Yes

      @iDropPhats Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@TheRealColt45 We don’t know if she mated, there were 1-3 hour gaps in between the shots in the video, so no one knows if the male was able to mate with the green reaper. Apparently, it was able to because if not, an egg sac would not have been able to form. Also, we don’t know if they somehow mated on the first night, or some time when the cameras weren’t on at night or throughout the day.

    I've known for a while that female mantises eat the males after mating, but I assumed you knew this information already so I was genuinely surprised when you discovered that Green Reaper had layed an egg sac. What a plot twist! XD

    Honestly, with how large she was, i was pretty convinced that the Green Reaper may have managed to get pregnant despite everything, so while i'm sad to see her go, it's nice to know her legacy will continue. probably.

    Beetles from the Genus Promecognathus are known to have cyanide resistance and tend to be predators of flat-backed millipedes and Glowworm beetles from the beetle family Phengodidae also predate on millipedes. These could be potential entries in case the millipede population gets too out of hand in the future, as millipedes tend to be live long lives.

      Yes, a tropical ecosystem should have a lot of species of beetles in it. Some beetles also eat land planaria. And basically all endemic beetles will in one way or another contribute to the food web and stability of the system.
