It was good choice having Luigi be the hostage instead of Peach. Rather than just being the unexpected hero rescues damsel, it gave Mario the drive to save somebody who's close to him and you can tell Mario and Luigi have a good brotherly love for each other. Also, Mario having get help from Peach not only progresses the established image of Peach being an independent fighter but also gives Mario and Peach time to develop a relationship. Luigi still could have used a little more screen time, but it was a smart choice.

They absolutely succeeded at giving the audience everything they could want out of a Mario movie. Quite a few traditional movie elements suffered to attain that goal, but it ultimately worked out. One thing this movie had going for it that the prior adaption didn't is 30+ years of nostalgia and games that folks young and old could relate to. Also probably had someone in charge that knew what Mario was, lol.

They didn't write a film to appeal to the tens of millions of adults that grew up with Mario. They could have written a film that appeals to every age (a la Toy Story).
