If I'm spending that money on a supercar, I definitely want a supercar look and a supercar engine. So the R8 is a no brainer for me.
But if I only can have one car in my garage, the Turbo S seems like the more practical and liveable everyday supercar.

+Iliescu Benyamin The Turbo is more comfortable, more usable, has more features, and you can literally drive it anywhere. The 911 also has rear seats (they do fit small children and a lot of baggage), and a front boot. The R8 can't quite match the 911's usability.
VirusTornado Well the R8 has a front boot too, but yea you can put more stuff in the 911 rear seats and the visibility should be better too.
boy638 And that 911 Turbo will never get old. 993 and 997 Turbos still look quick to this day. The old R8 had a timeless design, not sure about this one.

+She Swallowed It Ok, you're right!! Instead of beating the R8 but one car length, it'll be it by 3/4 of a car length. Jesus christ, not all cars launch the same. Some cars' launch control system forces a roll, unlike the immediate launch of the Turbo S.

I sit in traffic everyday in my friend's 2017 R8, super comfy and the air conditioning actually works well. Only thing about using it daily is how hard it is to get out.

PDK has better programming and higher torque, the audi was catching though and is the better car IMHO, better looking and more dramatic drive with just enough everyday usability. Seems like porsche audi were tired of getting beat off the line by GT-r's and have answered appropriately. An RWD mid engined porsche supercar with an NA flat crank V8 should be quite a ride...

vivalaphill Okay, you're right, the Porsche had a split second jumpstart, probably due to human error (newsflash, people aren't perfect!). You could have had Fernando Alonso in one car and Sebastian Vettel in the other, and the launch could still be imperfect at 0.25 speed.
Point is, the Porsche beat the R8 by more than what the jumpstart gave to the Porsche. The fact that the Porsche jumpstarted that fraction of a fraction of a second is invalid.

+DaQBall#1337 Porsche 911's ( Turbo and Turbo s) Kill all cars off the line. There are endless videos everywhere online, showing there is nothing that can get off the line as clean as a 911. Lets not forget Porsche has releasing a quicker Turbo S too. Its scary fast

if those cars have been tested at anything other than sea level the Porsche would have a very big advantage since the Audi would loose alot of power while the turbos will make up for the majority of lost air density.

Also they start the timer after 1 ft rollout so will always be quicker. that's why Motortrend and C&D etc always get better results than European magazines. Do some research and engage your brain first before replying

Shouldn't the v10 PLUS be compared to the turbo S? or they know turbo S is going to beat the audi too much, so they used the regular turbo on purpose?
0-60 times are for good conversation but that's not what these cars are about. The Porsche with lots of traction and turbos will build a lot of trq. at low RPM's as I expected it to do what it did. The R8, with more HP will take a little longer to build trq and HP based on it's normally aspirated design.
In my view, running them on the track and getting the different driving impressions would have been more interesting to me. Either way, one can't go wrong with either car.
Been in the Turbo S which is a great Car but for the looks sound etc would go for the R8 simply because these days you cant get the performance out of them on uk roads unless you go on a track or Autobahn
just wondering why the new Audi R8 gets so shitty test result by some magazines... at motortrends world biggest drag race 2016 the Audi R8 V10 plus whooped the whole competition including McLaren570S, new Honda NSX, new 2017 GTR, Viper ACR, Mercedes GTS, Jaguar F Type SVR..they tested the R8 in 2.6s 0-60mph and 10.6s 1/4mile at 130.3mph (motortrends fastest ever n/a powered car) excatly the same numbers the best ever tested Turbo S reached

No, nothing launches like a Turbo S. Engine over the rear axle pushes the weight down for maximum traction and the Turbo makes all of its torque at 1500 rpm, which is around 100 ft-lbs more than the R8 and it gets it much earlier. All of that torque goes down to the pavement off the line. The R8 had no chance off the line.
uh nobody said the porsche was inferior. Maybe it is the better car, but it still launched half a second earlier than the audi... doesn't change that fact

The Porsche 911 is the clear straight line winner, considering that car has more torque at lower RPM's, and the way the power is distributed through the car's amazing PDK dual clutch transmission.

Honestly I'd hate to pick between the two. The Porsche is a slightly better driver's car and it has that intoxicating acceleration sensation but the Audi just looks and sounds more special.
The R8 is faster but the Porsche got the jump and cars with so close straight line performance is just the start that only matters which car will win the race
New R8 V10 Plus and 991.2 Turbo S basically have the same performance, the drag race was too short and the Turbo S started off a tiny bit earlier. Up to 200 kph, both cars do the same time (under 10 seconds, 9.x) but up to 300 kph, the R8 is almost two seconds faster, not that it really matters. Both are amazing sports cars but the R8 sounds much much better and the interior of the Turbo S looks outdated.

Is it me or are we forgetting that the Audi was judged the better car. Porsche have had 40-50 years to get this car right and along comes only the second generation R8 and it takes its crown, that in itself is a brilliant achievement to the guys at Audi. They also saved an Iconic brand as Lambo would have gone to the wall had it not been turned around by Audi technology.

u realize that reaction time lag u had at the beginning is probably equal to the time diff when the cars cross the finish line. Need to subtract out human reaction time error when u do a comparison.

To my mind, the Audi just isn't special enough to be the pinnacle boy hood dream car of the garage, I would rather have a McLaren 570S for that. So that's why I prefer the Porsche, because you can use it every day like a Ford Focus, but it's one of the quickest cars on the planet from 0-60.

Incomplete test protocols. Needs metrics from: multiple runs, switching drivers, varying courses and conditions to make any real comparisons.
He got caught off the line still talking the guy in the porsche had much better reaction times, felt he was trying his hardest to justify the Porsche's existence, off boost refinement!! what is he on if you put the Audi into comfort mode it will drive like just fine but you stll have that glorious engine burble to enjoy. I think the Audi has taken its crown and where's it well. A faster 911 turbo will just make it struggle more for grip. watch the EVO match up, had it not been for a driver error the R8 would have been 7tenths of a second faster than the porsche on the track.
Why do people still consider this a sports car? This new R8 has the same chassis as the Huracan and last i remember thats a super car. The R8 has leaped from a simple sports car to super car status over night

Porsche will always be the pinnacle of the VW group, so it would be silly to have a Audi faster then the Porsche. It's going to be scary to see the Porsche 911 gt2 rs when it comes out.
The claimed 552 HP by Porsche for the 911S is closer to 600 HP. German car maker's have a tendency to down play total output for their vehicles.
When I hear the sound of R8 on the street, I will always say its a lamborghini, which it essentially is, just different badge on it...
