    Over the last few years, NRL fans in Australia have been leaving the sport because video refs have ruined the game. It's gone so soft.

    Handball rule is the problem. Every handball penalty seems harsh these days. You can ping a ball against a players hand from 4 yards away and it be given. Ruins a game of football penalties being given for that.

    • @GIBBO4182

    Here is the problem. There was 2 identical handballs after the ball bounced of the players body onto his arm at high speed. VAR looked at both and gave one? that is just mad. It was either 2 pens or no pens yet VAR went for an option that made no logical scense.

    • @basquat76
      @basquat76 Před 6 měsíci

      Do you remember what it was like before VAR? It was obscene how much teams cheated and how many blatant mistakes there was. RM won the CL 3 years in a row with one questionable win after another. Hell in one final Ramos deliberately elbowed a goalie in the face causing a concussion. The biggest game there is and that's how bad it was.
      Cheating has diminished significantly and so has offside goals. One mistake in England doesn't change that. The ball on hand is obviously a rule they need to look at. It's not VAR's fault, it's the rule that has to be changed.

When the ball is struck from such close range - unless the arm is outstretched in an unnatural manner - when the defender has no time to retract his arm away from the flight of the ball, then that is in no way a deliberate foul. Football HAS to get back to this simple definition of what constitutes a foul with handball.

    If the Referee had a clear view of the incident and VAR told him to take a look he should have told VAR to take a hike. Had the ball hit the PSG players chest it would have had the same outcome - the ball dropped immediately to the ground.

    Agree with Alan. VAR has ruined the game. Can't celebrate a goal. Used as a tool to corrupt the results. All a big fix not watching anymore. UEFA did their best to keep Mbappe in CL, just like F1 rigged it for Verstappen. Where can we watch genuine sports now?

    After the Fulham v Wolves fiasco on Monday and this VAR incident last night, I would like to see the end of VAR. I think the lack of common sense in its application is mind boggling and it is ruining the game. Now every weekend we are talking about it. It's not a matter of if there is going to be a controversy, it's a matter of which team will be the victim.

    So a serious tactic to win Champions League games for any team would be to not aim your shots at the goal (like football is supposed to be played)...No, instead just aim your shots and passes at the other teams arms and just shout "Penalty" and "foul" every 2 fkn minutes. Wow what an honorable way to win matches.

      Wow, you Arsenal fans never give up. The difference is in the Arsenal vs Newcastle game. There wasn't enough video footage to show a definitive decision to overturn the Referee, ball might have gone out of play, no great camera angle. Joelinton might have pushed Gabriel but no definitive angle and Referee might have had better view than camera angle. Gordon might have been offside but again no great camera angle. Even some pundits like Neville and Carragher think it was a goal. Now Bruno should have been sent off and VAR was wrong on that.
      Against PSG though, the Ref didn't think it was a Pen, VAR intervened and overruled an actual rule which says it it comes off body part then it shouldn't be counted. Not only that but no pundit thinks it was a penalty. Nobody.
      I'm not crying on all PSG fans tweets though about how they got that decision. Honestly mate, I'm embarrassed for all the Arsenal fans who are still crying about it.

    I do not think you can blame VAR more so the subjectivity of football rules than with VAR itself. Christina Unkel, a soccer rules expert, highlights that contentious calls usually involve grey areas where facts can support either side. The rules, especially for handball, are open to interpretation. For example, the Premier League's interpretation focuses on a player's 'expected' arm position and reaction time. Law 12 adds clarity by stating it's an offence if the hand/arm is above the shoulder level, unless the player deliberately plays the ball. Thus, while VAR helps in decision-making, it's constrained by these subjective rules, making it challenging to determine handballs definitively."

    My beloved Boro scored against Man Utd in a cup game via a handball, and I'm still dumbfounded at how that stood, I understand the change in the rules and how that affected it but it was so clear to me however unintentional that it was handball all day long, the natural/unnatural position excuse is just window dressing in my opinion, I was happy when it was given due to the many obvious ones that went against us, but howay, a jokes a joke, and some of these decisions are just that, a joke, let's get back to basics, VAR is more a controversy than anyone expected, when something is a hindrance rather than a advantage its time to go back to the blackboard as they say, UTB
