Mystery Artwork Found Behind 100 Year Old Photo

- While cleaning out a closet I found a 100 year old photo framed behind glass. I had never seen this photo before. When I took it out of the frame to clean I was shocked to find a mystery painting.

There is a great article about Cobelle (Edelman) from the Ridgefield Press under Ridgefield Notables. He was born in 1902. The bike looks to be a 1900's velocipede (tricycle). The Buster Brown clothing was also of that era which is the type of outfit the child in the photo is wearing. Is it possible this is a relative or that the photo is also of Cobelle? His family might recognize it. *Add:* I did locate two images of the artist in later years of life. It looks alot like him, but maybe it's my imagination. I could not find any other portraits. I would suggest looking into this. Not only is the art a find, but if it is a photo of him, that is just as huge a find. Was your husband related? Their history and genetics seem similar.
You know, it dawned on me that it could be. Edelman is a Jewish name and there were some very talented people in my Husband's family. His Grandfather was a great artist. We used to have tons of paintings by him, but they were destroyed in a hurricane down in Florida. It was a great family loss. There was no saving them. Mold the size of Christmas Trees grew on them.

@@ColorMyWorld I did not research his children, but did note that he was aged in the photo of him and a young son. The article I mentioned had links of shows below it and one link lead to that image. Wishing you all the answers on this quest.

I am a different person than I was 4 months ago. I am having much more good days than bad. I have worked hard to make sure I didn't get stuck grieving. I miss my Husband every minute of the day, but I made my mind up that I am going to live for the two of us. Art has always been my salvation. It's the one thing I have that will always bring me comfort. Wait until you see my new studio!

Before framing can’t you get it professionally scanned and sell the prints at an art studio? I would think some of the museums might want examples of his work? So much was lost with the fire! What a wonderful find and a wonderful piece of family history! And by the way….I’m so glad you are back and sharing your story. ❤
Mmm... Selling prints of this painting is going to be very dubious, copyright-wise, because you're dealing with international copyright law and estate law. Most likely, the actual painting was sold but the artist would have retained the reproduction rights unless the bill of sale or whatever paperwork there was specifically assigned the reproduction rights to the buyer.

Omg talk to me!! I'm a recent art historian graduate who studied ww2 theft. With your history, it's entirely possible that your family was hiding this to get out of Europe in ww2.
My thesis involved some of this sort of stuff and I would be happy to look into it with you
We suspect when the family came here they hid the art. They moved into a very tiny apartment so they may have just forgotten about it. I wish my Husband knew it was hidden. It's a big part of his history.

I know. If I didn't want to clean both sides of the glass it could have been another generation before it was found.

OMG. The sitting area in the closet is AMAZING! The photo of the boy looks like it's from about the 1890's. Love the watercolor painting that you found. I'm sure you will enjoy it a lot after you get it hung up.
My Grandfather in law was born in 1905 and the child looks like he is around 3. His Father was born 20 years earlier so the photo can be either one of them. I am putting it out on Ancestors. I have a cousin who keeps the family tree going. There may be some other photos that will give us the answer. I just haven't gotten a hold of them yet.
The photograph is gorgeous! Then that artwork is spectacular! You'd have to Google it, but I think copyright it for 70 years after the death of the artist. I would get it properly appraised and definitely get it insured. Then just enjoy and love it! It's really beautiful!
I have seen quilts made from T-shirts - using the decorative patterns on them. Fun looking quilts - you can wrap yourself up in it.
It does give an air of a hidden art from Europe like many artifacts, art and jewellery that was hidden by Jewish families. Unfortunately most of it was taken and had never returned by the Germans. And it's a beautiful painting, glad you found it and it isn't lost.

What a find! That is a lovely painting and looks as fresh as when it was executed. Whoever packed it wanted it well preserved. Behind a family photo is the perfect hiding place.
It's just mind boggling why it was hidden and then forgotten.
Absolutely fascinating! Before my father died, I worked on his family history. Up until that point, for many reasons and a long story, the only thing my dad knew about his ancestors was his father's name. Nothing else. Eventually I was able to gift my daddy with a family tree that reached to Europe, before the US became a country. I was able to identify sketches of family members that were done before photography. History and our own personal pasts are very important. Not necessarily because of anyone being famous, but because it gives us a firm footing...our roots.
What a wonderful blessing to find as you and your girls begin this new season of life. The past definitely gives breath to the future. I hope that you have a wonderfully blessed day and I patiently await your next video.
