That is not true. Ask the people who live in Amsterdam Venice Rome and coastal towns in Spain and yes the Brits have a bad reputation in some of these places. Brexit did not help for sure either. People just do not like a 2 faced visitor. Locals are sick of those tourists. They are pushed out of the housing market and get sick of rolling suitcases 24/7. What the hell is complaining to local politicians going to do? Nothing. Most of them do not speak English even. Don't waste your time there as a foreigner. We do not live in the British empire anymore where you are taken serious as a foreign visitor without a right to vote. Just go where you are welcomed more. In general those places are not the same as where the Brits go in big hordes.

I was born and raised in Bath, which is a tourist city. The council seems to concentrate on tourism and the university. A lot of the jobs are low paid seasonal jobs and there is little in the way of job opportunities. The city attracts rich luvvies and commuters to London so the properties are horrendously expensive .Young people have to leave the city when they leave the parental home.
When I visited my mother in hospital about 10 years ago, a nurse told me that Bath was London prices at Cornish wages and her children left because they couldn't afford to live there.
There was a water shortage when I went to Sicily in 2002, leading to restrictions on water usage. This resulted in people not being allowed to have showers in their own homes, however hotels were exempt - presumably because of tourism. So if a local wanted to have a show, they had to book into a hotel.
Tourism has its place, but if it gets too powerful it can ruin the affected areas. Unfortunately Spain has suffered from the influx of tourists that are just interested in drinking and parties. Even though it brings in money, it must upset the locals.
I do have sympathies with the Spanish who are fed up of tourism. Having said that, I am thinking of going to Spain next year for a birdwatching holiday.

GB News is correct to say that tourists like to eat and drink late.
The problem is that Spanish employers won't pay their staff properly...and they bully their staff into working late, sometimes for nothing, in return for being allowed to keep their jobs.
If employers are losing their staff...they are always complaining about lack of staff...they simply have to improve pay and conditions.
    Badic economics.
But Diaz and Sanchez have agreed with Biden to take some/many of the illegal immigrants from the US border.
Sanchez explains this by saying he is trying to help employers in the Spanish hospitality industry... because he hopes they will staff the restaurants and bars. There you have it: for all Diaz's fine words the Spanish government is actively undermining the already underpaid Spanish workers.

On the left side of us we’ve had multiple foreign owners that don’t speak English, and we don’t speak Chinese. You stop getting to know your neighbors because it’s exhausting with the constant turnover of new people, and language barriers. This is going on everywhere. Most everyone is finding it difficult to afford the increase in the costs associated with home ownership like property taxes which have also skyrocketed.

On a different note, last year I spent months going to the hospital several times a week. When I asked the younger nurses what their plans for the weekend were. Those under about 30 said to go home and sleep. While those older than that were planning to dance the night away.

I eschew all the tags of being a tourist by leaving at home all my ballcaps and sporting teams related clothing. I dress conservatively, speak cordially and act as a guest in their home. It pains me to think of towns in the north being overrun with tourists. Once it happens it will never be the place you came to because it was special. On a month long trip from Barcelona to Potes, across the north of Spain, I interacted only twice with English speaking tourists and that's the way I like it.

Our general attitude towards tourism is fine as long as the tourists behave normally (drunk and shouting is not normal). A large part of the income comes from tourism, both domestic and foreign. Why would we forego that income?
The legal rental of apartments to tourists is probably not complained about much, it is regulated (and taxed). However, there is a lot of illegal renting (untaxed), which nobody likes.
If you have a correct long-term rental contract, you cannot normally 'just be kicked out' because the landlord wants to rent to tourists, there is probably something else behind it. A landlord is not obliged to renew short-term contracts (less than a year).
May be different rules for different regions of Spain.
There are always a few people who try to blame their bad lives on others and they may feel better because they give some message on a wall or the Internet.

Without tourism the people of these islands will suffer. It has become a way of life that the industry and old way of life has been eradicated in favour of the quick Euro. Many years ago Spain put their holiday prices through the roof and was beyond the reach of many British tourists who the economy needed. People left Spanish holidays in droves leaving Spain to spiral in the sudden loss of the expected massive economy and the peseta crumbled. People found a new country called Greece. Many areas and islands had no English language and we had no Greek. It was less than the price of Spain before the price rise and although we had to "rough it" the empty golden beaches and clear warm sea very cheap drink and food was what we needed but of course there were no egg chips and beans for meals just funny stuff that we looked at with a suspious eye and a wtf is this. Spain realised they had shot themselves in the foot badly but the damage was done, Spain was no longer the be all and end of of Mediterranean holidays for us Brits. Its funny people NEVER remember their history over money.

  • @janneroz-photographyonabudget

The Spanners, they want the money that goes with tourism, they don't want the tourists that come with the money. I know a lot of tourists let themselves down, but for the most part, their money keeps these coastal areas going. I lived in Spain for a few years, around the south eastern coastal area. We paid all our local taxes. We were always put to the back of the queue when it came to money being spent on infrastructure etc. We were eligible to vote in the elections there, as residents. Oddly enough, we did vote, as did a lot of expats. Weirdly though, when it came to totting up the foreign residents votes, ALL those votes were mysteriously misplaced. Very odd. They never, ever found these votes again! In the local, non tourist areas, the sorts of places you get to see that tourist never do, the everyday places that you'd find in any country, the Spanish had to be first, in the queues in banks, at the doctors. It is their country after all. SOme will state here that we feel the same over here in the UK with regards to immigrants. But for us there, trying to learn the language. Working, employing in many cases, Spaniards, paying local taxes, national taxes, medical insurance, all part of the then European Dream, foreigners, not just us British, we were second class citizens. We were just cattle, being milked dry of our money, the Spanish as a whole, not all, but the majority, are mercenary, lazy, greedy.

I was speaking to some old friends (both long term expats and local Canarian's) on the Island of Lanzarote (where I lived for a few years in the 2000's) and there's a big issue on that island with very limited long term rental properties anywhere on the island. What is available is being rented at costs pricing out many locals. The issue seems to be the rise of the digital nomad to these agreeable weather places and many long term rental landlords turning these properties into airbnb (most of the time without licenses or being in a tourist rental property zone). They were lamenting the lack of action local government is taking and even when they do the first fines are a weekly airbnb amount! This has also forced property sales prices sky high.

The headline is specifically "British tourists slammed" when, in fact, the message is for all tourists, not just British ones and, as explained, English is just the best language to address the largest number of people. A more truthful headline would have been "tourists slammed", dropping the "British" because, as explained, it is not a message aimed only at the British. The article then continues to talk specifically about "British tourists" as though they were the only target. They are not and as such, specifying that the tourists are British is, at best, unneeded and, at worst, purposefully misleading. "The Balearic Islands such as Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca are popular holiday hotspots and depend on tourism from countries *such as* the UK."
Again they go on to talk about how this will affect Brits because they are *a British media company*

Come and visit Denia, in Alicante.
A fishing port coastal town with long sandy beaches and a great atmosphere!
