- If you’re fortunate to live in an area with mild enough fall or winter weather you should absolutely take advantage of this cool weather growing season! In this video I’ll give you a quick tour of my garden as it is goin into fall then I’ll show you exactly how I turn over my garden beds from the end on summer crops to fresh healthy soil that’s ready to plant. Then I’ll show you my indoor grow rack and the fall and winter veggies I’m growing, as well as a few other ideas for what you might want to plant this fall. Dude...great tour! Love your seed starting setup Kyle
Thanks Kevin! This seed starting setup has far exceeded my expectations! I could not be more pleased with how simple it is to start seeds and how well it works compared to starting everything in my hoop house like I did before.
@@urbanfarmstead Do you grow your seedlings completely under the grow lights, or do you rotate them outdoors to the sun any before the hardening off phase?
@@shakengrain1942 yes, all under the lights
How do hey Kyle, how do you keep your seed starters plants watered while you are gone fighting fires? I have found mine dry out almost every other day.
Finally someone in Sacramento! Since we're in the same city I will be able to follow what you're planting as the seasons change, so I can plant them too! I love your "metal fence" trellis! 😍 I'm going to do that next year!
Yes! 🙌🏼 it’s always great to have local sources! I highly recommend these trellis 👍🏼
Glad to see you back and safe!
Thank you! It’s good to be back
Excellent !! 🙌🙌
Thankyou for your service, we have been praying for you& your fire fighting comrades. Bless your heart!🙏♥️🤩❤🤩♥️🙏
Thank you so much for your prayers❤️
Thank you for your service as a firefighter! The garden looks great. I've had a lot of pest pressure this year but hoping my fall garden is healthy 😊
Thank you for your support! In my experience pest pressure is way down in winter so I hope that’s the case for you as well.
Ur the reason I started planting tomatillos, last year I stunned upon one of ur vids of u biting into a nice tomatillo from your garden and for some reason I could not find you once again. Thanks!!! Please be safe
That’s awesome! I love growing tomatillos! Thank you, and happy gardening
Thank you for your service. Glad to see that you’re happy, and back home safe. I would love to see a video of how you manage pests in the garden. Do you have a hard time regaining control of your plants from pests if you leave for a period of time or are not able to get out into the garden as much as you would like for a couple of weeks? Thanks.
Thank you for your support! It’s great to be back. Thank you for that suggestion. I’ll definitely be creating a pest management video
@@urbanfarmstead Following up on the pest management video! Would love to see it
I'm so glad I found you this week! I've been binge watching, and find your videos clear, concise, and very educational. You are now at the top of my go to list for gardening videos!
This guy has a really nice organized garden. In this video he tells which plants are best for winter garden.
Kyle, this was my first CZcams with you. Loved it, even though I live in Southwest Michigan. Can't wait to watch one of your videos! God bless you for all you do. May He keep you safe in the laborious work you do!
Thank you so much Janice! I’m glad you enjoyed my video!
So glad you’re here in Sacramento. I am in Wilton and my husband and I are new to gardening different vegetables and fruits. Thank you, I am learning so much from you.
Hi! It’s great to have a local garden community to share our experiences.
You are totally happy in your garden. Enjoy your channel 110% ❤
Yes! Thank you!
Oh and how lucky to be gardening in a zone 9! Zone 5 here, hardneck garlic in 2 weeks ago and carrots are only thing left to harvest. I grow lettuces indoors over winter. But for us now is the time to rest, dream and plan.
Yes, as a gardener I feel very fortunate to live in this zone.
Gardening in Sacramento too! (Orangevale) first time doing a fall garden and was glad to see you post this video (was patiently waiting lol!) ❤️❤️❤️ glad you’re safe from the awful fires this season
Hi, that’s awesome! I hope I answer some of your fall garden questions but do let me know if you have more. Happy Gardening
I’m so glad I came across your channel! I watch a lot of gardening channels, but they are all different zones. I’m 9b too (about an hour from Sacramento), so you have been especially helpful! I just started my fall garden last week but still have zucchini going along. I look forward to more videos! Thank you for your service with the fires- very appreciated!
I’m glad you found my channel too! I know how valuable it is to have local sources
Firefighter! Oh my goodness, do be safe!
Yes, thank you!
Stir fry swiss chard with cubed sweet pie pumpkin and some sweet fresh onion... soooo good! I also add swiss chard to pasta sauce, eggs, pretty much anything most people would add spinach to. I don't like how spinach gets so mushy when cooked, so I use the chard instead. Also (and I'm just south of you in Stockton) I grow my kale as trees all year long for several years.
Hi, thank you for sharing! That’s a great point that Swiss chard is the perfect substitute for spinach!
Thank you for giving me an equivalent to a free-to-me college intro to my dream job. You're amazing and I thank God for you and your passion.
Thank you for the top quality content and thank you for saving people's lives.
Thank you for your support!
I don’t know where you find the time but your gardens look fantastic. We homeschool our 5 and grow much of our own food. It’s FULL TIME!! Thanks for your great videos! We love them. From Nova Scotia Canada.
Good to see you again, thanks for fighting the fires and glad you're safe.
Thank you! It’s good to be back!
Sacramento stand up! Happy croptober and thank you for fighting those fires in our state
Thank you for your support!
I don't live in California but thank you for your service!
Thank you for your support!
Didn’t know you were a firefighter. Huge thanks to you. Noble and hard work. Matches the man we see in the garden!
Thank you for your support
Hi Kyle, I thought for sure I would see peas. I live in Auburn right up the road from you. I planted pole for the peas and a bush variety for the shoots. I don't know why I never thought of carrots this time of year but it's logical being that it gets hot so quick. I too got a late start because of the fires but more from a health perspective. We has very low visibility for weeks the smoke was so thick. Thank you for your service Kyle. I don't know how you do it. We deeply appreciate all our police and fire for keeping us safe.
Hi Judy,
Yes, peas are also a great winter crop in this zone and in fact I’m actually hoping to get mine sown tomorrow. I’ll grow them on my trellises. We’re fortunate to still have a bit of good fall planting weather to get more crops in the ground. Happy gardening!
I love gardening. Your garden is really very organized and neat. I got some really great ideas from you. Thanks 🙏.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed my video
Yay. Another Cali gardener. Hugging your channel now.
🙌🏼 thank you!
Another Sacramento person, excellent. Good video. I'm in Sacramento, also, but I'm in an apartment that is situated so that I don't get enough sunlight to grow anything :(. I soooooo wish I had a yard to grow my own food. Especially, berries. I want to have a small baking business and berries make great pie filling that can be used for a lot of goodies. And thank you for being a firefighter!
Thank you! You should try to get a spot at one of the community gardens in the area
@@urbanfarmstead I checked into that but there isn't a community garden close enough to my place for me to garden in. I don't drive, so, it would have to be walking distance. I want to move, anyway. Good suggestion, though.
Hey Kyle! Thanks for sharing this, I also live near Sacramento and so all your information fits right into my life as well! Looking forward to seeing your new setup for your more permanent garden!
Hi, I’m glad you’re enjoying my videos! I’m looking forward to my permanent garden too!
Thank you for your service as a fire fighter .
Thank you
Super excited for the fall garden! I am also in zone 9b as well so everything you said is very relatable. Thank you for your service and all the hard work you put into your videos to share to the garden community! Happy gardening! Can’t wait to see your fall garden update!
Awesome! It’s great talking with gardeners in in similar climates! Thank you so much!
Great video!! Happy you are safe. The wild fires in CA this past year were significant. God bless you and your family :)
Thank you
The recommended seed spacing on packages is based on antique garden equipment. Our equipment has improved but for some reason, the seed companies have not upgraded their spacing recommendations.
Many plants can be grown extremely close together using trellises.
Yes, I always plant very close
I'm In Sacramento too!! Starting to garden a lot more. Glad I have someone to follow locally!
I can tell by the comment section, that many of us are happy to find you. Seems like a lot of gardeners from zone 9b can be confident in following your advice. Thank you for your service.
Thank you! Yes, it can be challenging to adapt garden advice from gardeners in different zones. I’ve been growing in 9b for sone time now and although there are certainly differences throughout our zone, I’d say it’s a pretty great one to be in.
Awesome set up my gardening bro!
Thank you!
Goodness 93 degrees. That's lovely. We've had snow for two weeks in minnesota
Yikes ! I definitely don’t envy your weather 🥶
Got up to 115 in SoCal this summer. Smh
@@SpiceyKy yeah, we hit 117 here in August. Crazy weather!
How wonderful that you still take the time to share your gardening tips. Gods blessings on you to keep you safe always! Thank you for your service.
Thank you! I’ve learned so much through the years that I can’t imagine not sharing what I’ve learned with others.
Thank you for your service. Your garden practices really pay off when you have to be away from the garden for a longer period of time. Can't wait to see how your fall garden develops. I am already putting covers over my fall beds, here in zone 6a (zone 5 microclimate).
Thank you for your support! Yes, some extra work upfront pays off big time on the backend. Happy Gardening!
up in Lincoln so we are neighbors. Thanks for all your videos!! Has helped me out quite a bit.
It must've been the best feeling to harvest all those veggies knowing you grew them :)
Absolutely!
Thank you..im glad that, you're safe
Thank you!
High desert gardener here and yeah, it has been crazy here. Agree, set up is how it is done!
Yes, a bit of foresight, planning, and hard work up front will set you up for success and save lots of work later in the season and in the seasons to come. Happy gardening!
It's good to see that you're safe and happy, I live in SoCal and I know how devastating this fire season was. I hope that you continue to stay safe out there, thank you for your service. Also I highly reccomend perennializing your pepper plants so you won't have to seed them next year and they are already established at the beginning of the season. It usually provides me with higher yields and better tasting hot peppers.
Thank you so much! I’ve done that with my peppers before but normally I choose not to because I rotate my crops.
I was wondering why you didn't post often especially being such a great teacher, but now I know. Glad you're home safe. Thanks for all you do. Looking forward to watching your other videos.
Yeah, I wish I could post at least once a week but my goal for now will be twice a month and hopefully find a way to post more often. I do post more content on Instagram and Tiktok as well.
@@urbanfarmstead Post whenever you can, I understand. In the meantime, I will add you on IG (but I don't have tiktok).
Just new to your channel and you may not see this message as it is an older video (I live in Southern Australia so it is the right season for me)
We had a horror season with fires 19/20 so I have gratitude and admiration for the job you and all firefighters do.
Glad to see u back again💖
Thank you, it’s good to be back
This is exactly what I was looking for. I'm in Florida and I'm zone 9b as well. 👍
Thank you for your service. Lucky you, it’s getting cold here in NM. And oh! Your seeds box is so organized...Great idea!
Thank you. Yes I’m very grateful to be in this growing zone.
@@urbanfarmstead We
Miss the Bay Area weather, it’s unfortunate race is cancelled -am supposed to run the CIM next month. I’ll be happy (in my tiny garden) fall gardening instead!

Fox farms has some nice dirt too
Thanks for great info, seeing another garden local is what interests the most. We are in Citrus Heights, so same environment. Thanks!
It’s very interesting watching your ideas for tropical weather here. I love making my own micro organisms water from leftover vegetables and plants.
Thanks I don’t get much tropical weather, but can grow the subtropicals
Thank you for your service.
Thank you for your support
This is great!!! I'm in the CA Bay Area! So I was excited to find another gardener in my "sort of" area! My garden tour this year, was larger than ever before. I'm loving to experiment with new plants this season! 😊
Thank you! I agree, it’s always nice to have relatively local garden sources. Happy gardening!
Love your videos, great style and presentation. Hope to see more soon.
Stay safe, take care. Greetings from Germany!!!
Hi, thank you so much! I have a few in the works now and many more to come! Happy gardening!
It is inspiring. What a systematic way of doing the things!
Thank you!
Second the request for pest control. I lost half my crop of tomatoes to rats this year. I am in Sac as well. Thinking of getting a barn owl box in hopes of attracting them.
Thank you for that suggestion. I’ll definitely be creating some pest management videos, but there are many pests and many wats to manage them organically so hopefully I can start that series soon. I bait rat traps with cherry tomatoes and place them among my tomato plants.
This video may have just stopped my mental break down. I was not well with no faith left when your video about your orchard popped in my head and for whatever reason it calmed me and gave me hope. I thought that was weird, but I went with it and came to your channel and it's working 🙂If I make it through this, I can have my own orchard😄💪🏽🌳
I’m so glad to hear that! I’m working on a new video now with many more to come. I hope you have your own orchard soon💚
I love fire fighters!! Thanks for all you do!! Your garden is beautiful
Very excited to have found your channel. We live in Petaluma, CA. Same Zone 9, same heat wave. I'm a new gardener so am really looking forward to learning from you. Thank you so much for your service as a fire fighter too! Total hero in my book! My home was very close to the Glass fire this year. Scary stuff!
I’m so glad you found my channel too, and exciting for you to start gardening! Thank you for your support

Wow.. Beautiful garden
Thank you!
Such an amazing person you are
That’s very kind of you. Thank you
Thank you for your service!
Thank you for your support
I seriously would have watched you plant each bed. I know it's to much to video but perhaps the carrots would be nice. I planted (kinda) a whole seed pack of carrots and I think maybe 20 came up. Now I say kinda because it was getting dark and I may have just thrown some of the ground and patted them in lol. I really need some help in the carrot dept. The first time I grew them I started them in a tray and transplanted them. They did ok. I think (lol) I know better now but.....Anyway thanks for sharing. Janice
Kyle you're so amazing!! I just found your channel and i'm binge watching your videos. I have a question, do those wood chips stay in place if it's windy??
Hello! Happy to find your channel, I’m also in Sacramento Ca. It’s nice to check and learn how plants behave in the same climate.
Transplanting my kohl Arabia and parsley today. Your tomatoes looks awesome.

Excellent video! Very informative and direct to the point.
First off, thank you for being a fire fighter! I have friends in Cali, and it was scary out there. 2nd, of course you're friends with Kevin from Epic Gardening! I love his channel, also. I have goals for a small farm, but im an urban homesteaders right now. Third, I'm so glad I found your channel! You're so fun to watch, and you don't ramble. Excellent stuff. I love those trellises we used upcycled rebar from.my husbands job for our trellises (architectural concrete designer). They got rusty, but they wor and they were FREE.. Also, I'm currently binge watching all you're stuff.

Welcome back! So glad you're safe. Thank you for what you do for California! Curious if you've seen Kiss The Ground and what you think about Regenerative Gardening. Thank you for all the info! Love your diy seed starting rack!!
Thank you! I haven't seen it yet but I do look forward to checking it out.
Very Nice. I like your indoor setup.
You are so organized!
Nice! I shot my fall planting video about the same time, and I'm also about a month in a half behind, but mainly because of a back injury. I wish I had the luxury of just cutting my nightshade and other plants rather than pulling them up. Unfortunately around here in S. Florida we have root knot nematodes. So I solarize my beds every summer. But I love the idea of no-till when possible. I love your indoor grow system too. And yes, I'm also glad you're back and safe!
Love the way you set up the garden. Hope you are all done with the big fires in California.
Thank you! I hope so too!
Hi, thank you for protecting my home, I live in California & i can smell the smoke in the air. I love your garden & I follow your schedule on planting. I am thinking of making a seed starting rack like yours. Can you tell me know you water your seedling? How often? How much?
Hi! You’re very welcome. That’s awesome! I just use a water can to fill the seedling trays about once a week
Wow! Agarraré esa día sencilla que usa para sostener mis tomateras el próximo año 💚

Hi! Thank you!
Experimenting with the best tomato pruning for 19 years in San Diego, growing on steep slope.
4’x 8’ steel mesh from HD (used for concrete) - sits in between two stakes vertically, 20” above ground. Clips.
Let grow first 2 shoots of each tomato plant = three trunks tomato plants. Next 2-3 shoots let root in water - future plants.
All the next shoots on three stems let grow to the first bloom, than cut tips off.
So far this gives me the best crop. I do not prune cherry tomato.
That sounds awesome! Thank you so much for taking the time to share this with me! I might have to give it a try next summer
