      PH understands his image and dwan s handle on it too: he s very unlikely to be betting A hi or even AJ in that spot so when he bets and still gets check raised he knows the writing s on the wall with Qs full as he chopping at best as dwan s very unlikely to be bluffing him off of what s looking like a boat.

      @@Cwg. Let's say you flop a set, you bet, opponent calls. Turn: bet, call. River puts straight cards out there, you bet, opponent now raises. You KNOW your opponent hit the straight but can't help paying him off because you just can't believe they hit the gut shot... so you cry and make the call and inevitably pay them off. That is one of many crying calls.

      Drug use, drinking, not sleeping, horrible eating habits, and just an overall unhealthy lifestyle can do that. I don't know that Tom does that stuff, but a lot of people say he does or claim he has in the past. That combination and the stress of a high stakes poker life style can age you. Funny thing is is that he's looked older and worst in the past. It looks like he's been taking better care of himself now as opposed to before.

    I think Phil always expected to be taken seriously (probably an understatement), but he never appreciated how much his antics muddied those waters. It's nice to see a format where we are able to cut through all the years of mayhem and just appreciate the way he plays.

If it was the other way round Phil wouldnt call and would lose a lot less. That was the difference, phil won more an lost less, luck went both ways.

    Don’t get me wrong phil made some Insane hero folds and instinct plays but he ran so well it’s unreal. 4 bets 74 off and turns trips, surprised the club didn’t come when he made a straight flush.

      Tom should have just 4bet the tens, Phil doesn't 5bet shove air.
      Tom played horribly preflop this match, and got run over preflop like it's his first day playing cards. His lack of adjustment to Phil 3betting trash repeatedly, specifically at the same times (when steaming), was ridiculous. Just 4bet him! Phil hates putting lots of money in with air, even when he thinks you're weak.

    A few times the commentators were confused by Phil's bets because they were asking "what is he trying to represent with that bet?"
    Phil wasn't trying to represent anything. On those bets, Phil had narrowed down Tom's hand range and was either trying to get value or mess with Tom. Phil made Dwan look like an amateur this game, and Phil pretty much just stuck to game theory.

    Whenever someone asks if poker is gambling or skill, show them these last 9 NLHU matches.
    Fact is, if this format holds for the next 25 years, no one will ever go 8-1 over 9 NLHU live televised matches at these stakes, ever again.
    Imagine if the WR holder for Jeopardy was from the 1st episode? The only conclusion one could make would be that relatively speaking, that person, at that time was unquestionably the smartest player ever to compete.

    Phil's min reraise around 5min was a flex and a half. He knew Tom was bluffing, and he Wanted Tom to know he knew to put him on tilt. So he even checked river to show Tom instead of value betting.

    Everyone and their mother is raising with the Queen's full hand that Phil had against Tom's King's full re-raise and most likely being crippled and losing the match. Phil thinks about it for 3 seconds and throws it away. That's insane.

      Why would anyone ever raise? It's clearly a call or a fold. There is absolutely nothing to gain from raising. Everything worse than queens full has an easy fold. Everything better than queens full obviously raises again, and you chop with another queen. Queens full is nothing but a bluff catcher in this spot.

      The Queen fold is easier than the tens to be honest. Correct call with tens I think. Tom wouldn’t barely ever bluff Phil there. I think dwan is better couldn’t have possibly ran much colder this match, brutal headsup run outs for him. But Phil does have that white magic I can’t lie

    Hellmuth is the GOAT read his book the Poker Brat he’s a decent and humble human being. I have paid for Pokergo just for these matches and his other appearance my favourite player to watch along side Dnegs and Dwan.

    Phil played okay here but also so incredibly amateur plays. The check when he had the straight flush on a 5 straight board is such a minus EV play. Dwan never going to bluff that river and a great spot for PH to bet big and potentially get called by someone Dwan playing the board. Just such a waste of a monster hand.

      Lots of pros would have bluffed that river in Tom's spot. Tom himself had done that in a previous similar hand that match. When the commentator Phil Galfond says he likes Phil's line, it means something.

    This proved his legitimacy as the GOAT. For years his opponents named his only flaw as his ability to play in cash games and heads up but he proved them all wrong

      He will get crushed in the best online cash games, especially heads up. He excels at one format - live NLHE tournaments. Especially against amateurs. Playing other poker variants, or online, or cash, he's not even in the conversation.

Were such an epiphany to strike you , you might also one day realize that some people are innately luckier than others and then you'd understand why "odds" taken in a vacuum without knowledge of the luck quotient are BS. A 50-50 to most is probably 65-35 to Phil H, Phill I, Antonio E , D-Negs etc. Learn it , love it, live it.

    Can somebody please tell me why Phil didn't go for value when he had the stone nuts straight flush? If Tom was trying to trap with a flush or higher straight it would have been GG. Plus Tom likely would have called with any two cards if he thought Phil was trying to get him off a chop. Literally makes no sense to me.

      He obviously thought Dwan was stronger and anticipated a bet so was trying to set the trap with a check raise but it obviously didn't work because Dwan checked behind

      @@danielbentley7117 that’s exactly my point. If Phil raises 1/3 or 1/2, Dawn’s going to ship it if he has something. If not, he would just call anticipating a chop. He gains nothing by checking to Dwan in this instance

      @@David-uf9hh The board texture was so co-ordinated though. Perfect setup for Dwan to bluff or for Phil to think that Dwan might believe he is ahead with a 6 high straight or even just an Ace or 2 pair. Dwan almost definitely would have folded to a river bet anyway and it was a relatively small pot, so it wouldn't have swung the match significantly either way.

    Phil is probably favourite in this format. It's a fixed buy in . which makes it a tournament..he never plays the high stakes cash games

      He just doesn’t care about cash games because it doesn’t add to his resume. You can list off bracelets, tournament wins and special matches like this, but cash games are something you play solely to win money, which he doesn’t need.
