  • We have tent leakage problems, a slug infestation, and mold growing on our gear, but HEY! We’re going to McCarthy Alaska - a deadend town in the largest National Park in the USA (Wrangell-St. Elias NP), so we’re happy! This journey will require 180 miles of dirt over dramatic bridges and past stunning waterfalls, and it all ends in an epic glacier. What’s not to LOVE about this ride?
    Plus, Tim can’t seem to pronounce the name of our Big Agnes tent.
    Welcome to our channel 2Up and Overloaded, we’re excited to have you along for the ride!

    New suscriber here. I moved to Alaska on August 21st of 2020. I have been to Valdez several times. I have family coming to visit in a few months and I am taking them to Valdez from where I live in Eagle River, AK. If you had come to Valdez in mid-summer you could have seen the sea lions only 15 feet away from the shore at the Soloman Gultch Hatchery. The salmon are literally swimming on top of each other and you could probably reach out and grab them by the shore.

    • @2UpAndOverloaded
      @2UpAndOverloaded  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for the great question IronHorseGladiator! We do not book ahead of time. I'd say 99% of the time we just show up at places and hope for the best (and it always seems to work out. Being able to camp really helps). But we have occasionally booked a place, sometimes it'll be an Airbnb in a big city. But in general we don't like doing that because then we have to be at a certain place at a certain time, and you know how it is on the road... Things happen and plans have to change, a lot. So that's how we ride! It's complete freedom and we love it!
      Do you usually book places and just wing it?

  • @JagLite
    @JagLite Před rokem +1

    What?!
    You went to McCarthy but didn't go to the Kennicott Mine??? That's the only reason to go to McCarthy!
    The historic copper mine buildings and history are very interesting but it sounds like you didn't know about it? You can ride across the foot bridge and all the way up to the old mine buildings and get a tour.
    But, too late I'm afraid.
    I was going to recommend that you spend a day or two in Skagway and camp at the beautiful campground in Dyea and be sure to go to the Gold Rush museum and see the gear each person had to take with them. Then I remembered you were here in Alaska in August and today is January 1st... So I'm a bit late to make a recommendation.
    Once again you put in excellent music for the different scenes. I'm looking forward to each video to see what music you will add. You must have an excellent memory for music to be able to find just what you want. The variety you put in each video is amazing.
    I know this suggestion is way too late for your Alaska adventure but for your continuing trips in rainy areas:
    You need a tarp.
    Nope, not a blue plastic tarp, an Alaska size camp tarp for our rain, rain, and more rain. It changed my view of camping completely when I read the Tarp thread on ADVRider and the light bulb went on in my (dim) brain. Instead of an expensive tent that doesn't leak (until it does) I am now using a cheap ($30) two man tent that sits on the matching ground cloth and I puta small blue tarp as a front porch (6x8 folded in half for 6x4) and that is where my gear stays, not in the tent. How? because the entire area is covered by my Kelty Noah 16'x16' lightweight tarp. I don't put the rain fly on my tent because it isn't needed. I park my bike under the tarp, my tent, my folding chair, my gear, everything stays clean and dry. And the inside of the tent stays so much cleaner since I take my boots off outside, my rain gear, everything that gets wet and/or dirty stays outside.
    I do carry two 6' expanding aluminum poles if I ever camp somewhere without trees but I haven't needed them yet. And yes, it does add a fair amount of time to set up the tarp and take it down. But the time is gained by not having to dry a wet tent, sleeping bags, and gear.
    Here's how I do it:
    If it is not raining I set up my tent first, then set up the tarp. However it seems like half the time it is raining so:
    I set up the tarp FIRST while still wearing my helmet (or a rain hat), I pull the tarp out of the stuff sack my wife made for me and all four corners with the ropes attached go into the stuff sack last so they are the first to come out. I pull off the sack and pull the four corners out with the tarp flat on the ground, adjust as desired then tie the ropes to branches, trees, posts, camp table, or anything and that pulls it up off the ground (or insert poles in corners if needed). Then, once the tarp is up I roll the bike under it and remove my camping gear. Lay out the tent ground cloth (came with the tent) and set the tent up without any part of it getting wet. Then my front porch tarp and I set my bags, boots, rain gear, riding suit, etc on the porch then put my self inflating pad and sleeping bag inside my nice clean tent The tarp is pretty much always wet but lives in its own bag, and dries out very fast when the rain stops, the ground cloth and porch tarp have their own storage bags, and that's all that gets wet and they are quick and easy to dry.
    If it is raining in the morning I can pack everything up while still under the tarp and dry, then load the bike and be ready to roll with only the tarp still up. Then I pull the loaded bike out from under the tarp and untie the 4 corner ropes and pull the tarp over itself (in half) then starting at the center of the tarp I stuff it into the sack with the 4 corners with ropes going in last. Strap it on the bike and I'm off.
    I tried coiling the corner ropes, then putting each one in its own little bag (still tied to the corners) and removing the corner ropes each time but I found that for me it was easiest/quickest to just stuff them in the bag and they come out with no knots in them so just a bit of untangling frees them up. I do carry a bag of assorted lengths of extra tie downs, and a tree soft tie.
    I don't build a campfire under the tarp as some do, it just seems too risky to me but I can build a fire near one side so that I can sit by the fire but still under the tarp. I also set the tarp up with the low spot where I want the runoff to go and sometimes when the rain is pouring down the runoff makes quite a waterfall. I can also have one side down on the ground to block the wind or an ugly view.
    It is kinda fun (mean?) to sit outside the tent to read or write or eat and know that everyone else is doing the same thing stuck inside their tents with all their gear inside with them. Ahhhhh.... Even their big, expensive tents with a vestibule is nothing near as nice as a big tarp.
    Long winded I know, but I hope it helps.
    Most of us have had the experience of a leaking tent with soggy sleeping blankets and clothes, muddy tent inside and out, everything wet. The tarp makes a HUGE difference in comfort and happiness.

      Hi JagLite48, thank you for the awesome description of your amazing camp set up. I love it!! More in that later though...
      First I want to say that yes, we do go to the Kennicott Mine! Stay tuned for the next couple of episodes... We also go to Skagway, but not the museum... Which is a shame, that sounded cool. We just didn't know about it. But I think you'll find some interesting turn of events in the next few episodes 😉
      Now about your cool tarp camping set up. I think it's really awesome, and in many ways I would be very jealous if I was struggling with a wet tent and saw you with your awesome tarp mansion. Unfortunately, we are so overloaded at the moment, I don't think we could fit anything so expansive into our set up. But it is something to think about for the future. I (Marisa) absolutely hate things being cold and wet. That being said, I'm sure there are many motorcycle campers out there who will read this and think, "Hey, that's a good idea!" I've heard from a lot of people planning an upcoming trip to Alaska on this channel, and I think your advice will really help them.
      So thank you for your great advice and descriptions of your camping set up, I'm super jealous! And thanks for watching and commenting, happy 2023!!

    Spray hydrogen peroxide on a wet tent to prevent mold :)

      Wow, I had no idea, such an easy solution! You are my hero!!! We are 100% going to try that out because mold on our gear has frequently been an issue for us, and thank you for sharing your awesome advice!!

      Well, we are currently in moldy Florida, went camping last weekend, and it rained on us the whole afternoon and night, and we had to pack up a wet tent in the morning. It was extremely hard to dry since it was so wet here for so many days, and so humid as well. Also, our next global adventures are most likely going to be in a very moldy part of the world, so this info is going to be a life saver!!
