- Indonesia is the world’s largest palm oil exporter, and much of that is grown on the island of Borneo in Kalimantan. So as we rode our motorcycle across the entire region, we realized that palm oil is hard to miss. In fact, considering that palm oil makes up 11% of Indonesia’s export economy, I’m not surprised to see that it was grown absolutely everywhere.
But because pristine rainforest has been cleared for palm oil production, the industry is very controversial. And so as we made our way through Kalimantan, we decided to take a little excursion into a palm oil plantation, and learn all that we can about the pros and cons of this product.

Actually, corn production in Indonesia is also quite large, but most of it is made into flour because there are no companies here that process corn into oil. In ancient times, before Indonesians recognized palm oil as oil, Indonesians used coconut milk which was cooked until it released oil. However, currently coconut oil production in Indonesia is still small because most coconuts in Indonesia are only made for instant coconut milk. But actually, palm oil in Indonesia is not only made for oil, Palm oil in Indonesia is widely used to mix diesel fuel and cosmetics, Then, palm oil trunks are used as natural fuel in factories and power plants. In fact, there are many uses for palm oil in Indonesia apart from being used for oil.
There are thousands of uses for Palm Oil! It is an incredible product!

Palm Oil was first brought into Malaysia from Africa in 1917. It then became the crop of choice to alleviate poverty under the FELDA (federal land development authority of Malaysia). This scheme which started in the late 1950s has succeeded in lifting almost 2 million people out of poverty.
Malaysia then created Palm Oil Research Institute in 1979 to diversify the use of palm oil. Palm oil has now become the most sought after "fats" used in just about everything.
As commodity of choice, many Malaysians companies started growing Palm Oil, became rich and expanded to neighbouring Indonesia.

Indonesia with such massive lands just sharing a few percents land for Palm oil, but Malaysia? Not that wide but has more massive palm oil land compared to Indonesia. I live in Sabah and so sad our rainforest in Sabah Sarawak destroying by palm oil😢😢😢

Go to Sumatra, there are more oil palm trees compared to Kalimantan. What's more, the entire province of Riau is full of oil palm trees wherever you go, and Riau is the largest palm oil producer in Indonesia, Kalimantan is nothing in comparison. with the island of Sumatra, especially in the province of Riau

That kind of restaurant is called Minang restaurant or Padang restaurant. Padang is the region in west sumatera where the cuisine is originated. Minang is the name of the tribe. You can find minang/padang restaurant almost anywhere in Indonesia. So next time you want that sauce, just visit the nearest padang restaurant.
And welcome back to Indonesia. While you're at it why don't you go to Sumatera? Sumatera is a little more developed than kalimantan but not as crowded as java.

The real Kalimantan / Borneo is in the middle of the island, called Heart of Borneo, look at the satellite photo, it is in a very dense forest, namely; Sapat Hawung Nature Reserve, Betung Kerihun National Park, Kayan Mentarang, etc, the area is very big, please visit it, access is definitely very difficult but not impossible, enjoy 🌳👌
