  • The Ringer’s J. Kyle Mann takes a look at how Chris Paul beat the odds with his All-Star-level season at the age of 35, how it compares to Steve Nash and John Stockton at the end of their careers, and the impact Paul has had on the Phoenix Suns this year.

    2:24 I say this all the time. People forget just how athletic Cp3 was before his knee injury. The way Ja morant has been able to break people down off the dribble and shoot his little floater reminds me of cp3

    • @lunacy5510
      @lunacy5510 Před 3 lety +2

      Agree. CP3 is the reason why I even care about basketball and Morant's CONTROLLED athletism really reminds me of CP3 which in my opinion is a great sign that probably he could also end up being known for his longevity just as CP3 unlike the majority of other athletic guards. My favorite young guard is DeAaron Fox and sadly I can't said the same about him yet and at this point he reminds more of John Wall who didn't age nearly as well, but he is getting better and there is still time for him. However, how controlled yet still fast and explosive Morant is only in his second year is extremely impressive.

      @@jasonshin9004 those are all traits I’d attribute to Kyle as well. He was quite literally about to be the official designated coach when almost our entire coaching staff was out. The only reason why he wasn’t is because it would have violated the chargers because it wasn’t designated in his contract as a player coach 🤣 also if you wanna see how good lowry is at being a floor raiser, watch the 30 point comeback vs the mavs where it was Lowry & basically a g-leauge team.
      I respect the hell out of Chris Paul and one area he’s better at than kyle is as an isolation scorer, his craft with his handle can open up any short.

      Nash dealt with the Kobe-led Lakers, the Dependable Juggernaut Spurs, and the Dirk-led Mavs.
      Combine that with freak injuries to these guys AND teammates over their careers? Yeah, it's just plain old bad luck. If CP3 doesn't pull his hammy in a Game 5 WCF win a few years ago and/or if Harden and his other teammates didn't UTTERLY crap the bed in the subsequent games, there is literally no doubt in my mind that both CP3 and Harden would be sitting on rings right now.

    I'm just a minute into the video but I can tell you some commonalities between these three players. It's the ability to see the floor very clearly. The ability to slow things down when you need to slow things down and to pick it up when it needs to be picked up. Being able to pass is probably the last skill that you're going to lose. It probably requires the least amount of physical ability to maintain at a high level. Youngsters can score but veterans can always see the floor. If you look at Nash and Stockton you see the same thing that you see in Chris Paul. A smaller floor general who has eyes in the back of his head. That's something that doesn't go away.

      It is. Think about it, historically when was the last time a PG was the best player on a championship team? Curry 2015 (wasnt even finals MVP), and then you have Tony Parker (wasnt the best player on his team really, just won Finals MVP), and then you have Isaiah Thomas (great team around him as well) and Magic who was 6’8

      @@MehkaRokca Tony was the best player on that 2014 championship team. Kawhi just peaked on the playoffs.

      every team that has ever won a chip had a point guard. its not that tough on them

      I think part of the issue is you rely on your 6' or 6'1" guard to create scoring opportunities for the team for about 45 minutes, but in crunch time you rely on them to get you the tough buckets late in a playoff game. That puts you at a physical disadvantage compared to leaving the last shot to an MJ or LeBron.
      Speaking of those guys, the other and more pressing problem is that these three players got blocked by the likes of MJ, Hakeem, Duncan, Shaq, Kobe, the Hampton's Five...

      @@jacobcardinal8041 you miss the point. Most teams who won championships at the level of cp3,Stockton, and Nash were scoring point guards rather than passing guards.the 3 mentioned above are the original definition of a point guard. Not the hybrids we see today.

    Just finished watching game 1 of Suns and Nuggets. CP3 had a great game.
