    WOW! 2021 specs released for the Levo Comp (alu, $6250 USD). Big changes: they moved to a Fox Rhythm 36 (and bumped to 160mm), dropped the SRAM and went Shimano SLX for brakes AND drivetrain (1x12). That addresses a couple of the build necessities we discussed right there! Cha-ching. Shock is questionable - I'm still going to go with the CC coil and with the wheelset - but this is getting better already! No idea on the Praxis forged M30 crankset - would probably switch that out with the bars/stem... I'll keep you posted, Sam.

      Finally picked one up yesterday but off on the price a bit, well in Ca is 7599... not cheap but one hell of a bike. Was thinking of Turing into a mullet after I ride the hell out of the 29er. I am used to a 27.5 bronson, so the 29 feels a bit odd to me but I think it will do well on the trail. Cheers.

    Can't really comment on your selections, but I think your order of importance is spot on. Any Shimano brake system is superior to any SRAM system, and I would probably gone for the XT's, but SLX is close. I'm surprised about the tires being bad. Thought the Butchers Grid were decent, so I wouldn't spring for the extra until I shredded the Butchers. Another excellent Vblog.

    Owner of the 2020 Turbo Levo Comp, same color as the thumbnail in the video. 1st Upgrade was front brake to Magura MT7 Pro with 220mm Magura MDR-P disc. It feels like Brembos on a Ducati, awesome stopping power, and very little lever travel after the brakes have started to bite. 1 finger stoppies without shifting weight. I kept the rear brake because I like the modulation of the SRAM Guide RE in the rear, as the rear is much easier to lock up.
    However, during the testing and break in phase of the front brake, I realized the stopping power was too much for the Lyric, the fork would vibrate fore and aft. I have a Fox 38 Factory 160 mm travel in mind for upgrading the fork next year. Also upgrading the fork because it starts to get stiff when I ride parks/resorts with a lift into run 3-4. Float X or X2

    Have a 2020 Levo Expert. After 300 miles and many headaches over the Sram Code R brakes, went with Shimano XT brakes. This is a must upgrade to any bike with Srams. Your suggestion to go with SLX might be another great option. Looking to get the OneUp dropper but did go with the OneUp stem and bars. I think your recommendations are spot on. • @EnergyNewsToday
    @EnergyNewsToday Před 3 lety +2

    So I just finally switched over my SRAM Code brakes and drivetrain to Shimano XTR on a 2019 Turbo Levo. This is an absolutely huge difference in braking ability compared to SRAM Code and now you can shed speed faster and later into corners and with 1 finger with zero arm and hand fatigue. I am a big guy that goes fast on a heavy bike and after having both I can tell you for sure that all that modulation that people talk about is absolute rubbish. The Shimano difference is so wide and confidence inspiring I cannot believe people even compare the two in the same sentence. I also think that they have enough modulation for anyone. On SRAM I was looking to upgrade the discs from 200 to 220 but then just decided to switch Shimano XTR 9120 with 203 Ice tech and the power difference is significantly better. Then switched the shifter, derailleur and rear cassette to twelve speed, everything but the crank, to Shimano and I can tell you that Shimano blows away SRAM in all ways. Want to save a few bucks get XT. The bike is a whole new bike and way better IMO in all ways. After this back to back test of components on the same bike Shimano wins by a huge margin! No, I don’t work for Shimano.
    I also thought the shock upgrade to DVO Onyx in front and Topaz in rear are significant changes. I love this bike now and at the beginning I could never get it to feel right.

  • @JasonTankard
    @JasonTankard Před 4 lety +1

    I love the upgrades you did, and that would make the bike ride a lot better, but the one thing I found when demoing a carbon vs non carbon frame ebike was that the lighter bike was more playful and fun, in that i could throw it around more, and move it around easier. So for me I got the Merida e160 9000 model (second highest, I did not want the carbon rims, and did not have any need for XTR groupset, 9000 model had top of the line ebike specifi DT Swiss rims, and really good fox suspension, it did have the DPX2 rear shock not the X2, but I don't think I needed the X2 personally, I'm not overly heavy, and while I like to do jumps and drops, i think the DPX2 will be more than capable and far less trouble to dial in.
    I had considered the LTD model, as I've never owned or needed a carbon frame bike before, and I had not actually intended to get one now, until after the demo rides... I also rode the e140 8000 model, which has the same sort of spec suspension as the LTD, but with a little less travel, and it was carbon, and I preferred the lighter carbon bike. I have no regrets with the bike I chose now though.
    I also run cushcore, some decent mudguards and a frame protector kit on the bike. I opted to buy a second battery seperately also (where the 10k model came with one). So for me the second top model, and some personalising did meet my needs, where as fully customising a lower model alloy one didn't work out for me, but it is possibly I could have made it similar weight and lots of fun with the right suspension components and upgrades like you did here, I think my ability to get that customising as perfect as you did, would not have been as good.

      Rider thanks for watching and your question. I have upgraded my Decoy from 160 to 180 and I don't find any problems at all. Also a few of my Levo mates have gone to 170 all its going to do is Slacken the head angle a little and give you more travel to go DH.. You don't need to upgrade the charger at all when changing the airspring. Try and get the new 2021 Debon air its better. I hope that helps.

    Just discovered your channel and I really enjoyed this piece. I've been riding a Turbo Levo Comp since 2016 and I've been upgrading along the lines that you describe here during the past 3+ years. I'm currently running with Magura MT5 brakes, Easton Haven carbon risers and my favourite upgrade - a pair of Hope F20 pedals (colour coded to match the frame!). I'm now looking to replace my Levo with one of the new Levo SLs, but supply here in the UK is currently very thin.

What is the easiest process to get up to 170 front and rear, without having to do to much with the rest of the bike? Thanks bro.

    • @SamsBikes
      @SamsBikes  Před 3 lety

      hey Jeff thanks for the kind words, the Levo is a rad bike, I know you can change the rear shock and get 155mm but that would be it on the rear go a X2 check Marshal Mullens videos on it! Also you can change the airspring on the forks pretty easy, it’s available in 160 or 170 or 180 just order it and do a service on the forks and change the airspring. I wouldn’t go much over 170 it will change the geometry to much.

  • @EnergyNewsToday
    @EnergyNewsToday Před 4 lety

    Modify the Comp...it will be more satisfying.p as long as you are getting the same battery size.
    So I bought a 2019 turbo Levo expert on sale after the 2020s were released for $6499 and changed the Pike out to a DVO Onyx SC 160mm Changed the rear shock out to a DVO Topaz 210x55 to get a little more travel out of the rear and I paid for custom tune on both. The DVO stuff is flat out awesome and the OTT setting for chatter is amazing. Changed the Butchers which IMO are horrible out to Maxxis Assegai and rear a Maxxis Aggressor double down. Changed the crank out to a Miranda Kappa 155mm which drastically decreased pedal strikes. Next I want to change to brakes out Shimano Saints or and the wheels out to something with wider internal spacing like 35mm or 40mm. Oh...almost forgot I added Cush Core inserts and added stability and have had zero flats of any kind since doing that. And changed the stem to an SQ1 because I have a super long torso and the cockpit is squished to me.
    There is something definitely satisfying about customization. I’m in about an additional $2200 not selling my old stuff yet and I got a lot of stuff on super sales but the bike is sweet except for the SRAM groupo which I feel Shimano stuff blows away.
    I am a big dude and interestingly enough the Roval wheels have held up dang good I just think the rear is too narrow and I am getting tire rollover.
    I cannot wait for the day when you can order your frame-set and chooses the components and wheels you want so you are not being stuck with parts you don’t want or cannot handle your size.
    This review is really good. I think I going to go buy a rear Eddy Current because I don’t think I can switch the the front Maxxis Assegai out because it has insane cornering traction and is the best front tire I have ever had on any bike.

      Don't agree on comparing Schwalbe to Specialized tires as great vs shit, because both are excellent. (I do prefer the purgatories to the butchers, except in springtime, which further makes the point tires are location and style specific enough that general recommendations lean towards malpractice.)
      I ride Schwalbe on my Sworks Epic and have had them on my Levos, not convinced they're better or worse. Definitely not the super obvious Sram to Shimano brakes comparison.

    Some problems with this thinking Sam!
    I have both of these spec bikes. His (S4 / Large) and Hers (S3 / Medium). I ride the Expert Carbon, she has the comp and I went through this same process a few months ago when I was deciding what to get. What I now know having had both bikes and what I would do differently.
    - Lyrik feels flimsy compared to the Fox36. Big stiffness difference. Being the aggro rider you are you will notice it!!! If you were to get the Comp, put on the Fox38 or the new Zeb! - This was one of the biggest causes of headache while deciding. Neither were out when I got mine. But they are now!
    - Code R Brakes are superior to the Guide's - HUGE improvement. Bleeding takes some fiddling but much better now. You can change, but its not a reason not to buy a Expert.
    - Ratio's: 11-42 on Comp vs 10-42 on Expert Carbon - driveline, it makes a difference! That lower ratio really is noticeable. Worth noting mate.
    - Shock on Comp is rubbish, Expert is average :) A token replacement and that really helped my Fox DPS from Average to much better.
    - Tyres are a choice. Also not the COMP comes with a 2.6" rear (Despite what the website says!) and the Expert comes with the 2.3" and stronger sidewall. Website says otherwise. Both have 2.6" front. I have changed to Aggesai 2.5" Front and DHRII DH 2.4" rear and much more stable and planted.
    - BOTH our dropper posts have failed in the 1st few months! Both being replaced under warranty. They are 2 different models on the Comp and Expert BTW and different failures. Mine seized mid stroke and hers dropped a seal leaking oil all through the frame.

      if your riding a road bike or a hardtail totally carbon is better because is so stiff but with a full suspended Ebike you dont need it stiff you loose power through the suspension so there is not much in the stiffens but the carbon bars I feel you get a more snappy turn with zero flex. Look its just me and what I like and everyone is different

      There is a software update now that claims to have fixed the problem for the motor, check it out.The motor warranty has also been extended from 2 to 4 years. I'm taking my 2020 levo(purchased at the end of September 2019) to the shop to get the motor software updated this week. I have 1250 miles on my Levo with no motor problems. I'm still on the original brakes, chain, and tires, but the back tire will need to be changed out sometime in the next couple hundred miles. I have updated the stock aluminum handlebars 200 miles ago to Forte carbon bars 780mm and notice a big reduction in vibration and more comfort. They are a great value and hope they hold up long term. I have Ritchie carbon bar on my old 2010 Diamondback sortie 3 bike and it is still holding up after many years of hard riding. Lots of fun riding out here in northern California.

    Loads of fun speccing bikes but mine always end up really expensive.
    I quite like the feel of some SRAM brake models but Hopes are a really good upgrade IMO.
    I agree I prefer a Carbon Bar and I'd go Bergtec Stem.
    Possibly an Ohlins coil.
    Yeah totally agree with the fork upgrades and 160/170 is more than enough for 99% of riders. I like the higher end RS Lyrics but would be tempted to sell it and try the new 38 Fox.
    As for wheels just some cheap and strong Al rims on some Hope hubs for reliability.
    Tyres I'd go with some Maxxis DDs or DH Casing.
    This guys riding a few of the above components and shows how good the Maxxis tyres are (Btw you're not as fast and the trail is more gnarly in real life): czcams.com/video/rOG6Eh4Va3M/video.html

    • @Coolcmsc
      @Coolcmsc Před 3 lety

      Yes...... but...... The bike is the frame/motor/battery and the rest is bolted on. If you don’t like the bike/frame, then fine, don’t buy. A mistake to allow components to become the focus.....

    i’m sorry but the price for this bike is not worth it, there has been problems with the motor on only these bikes please do your homework rather than going for the brand. i think they fixed the issue couple months ago but this is recent and no body is talking about it.

    • @akabukiman
      @akabukiman Před 4 lety +2

      Maybe you should do your homework. Brose fixed the issue with the 2020 production. If you get one now, it's likely to have motor produced in 2020. Otherwise if it really breaks (3-4% break according to Specialized) you will definitely get a 2020 motor.
