    Although these Levo’s are essentially the same model, there are 4 years that separates these 2 bikes, and the point of this video is to find out what has changed in 4 years and if the new Gen 3 Turbo Levo is really is that much better.
    This Gen 3 Specialized Turbo Levo Comp Carbon is Size S3 and as the name suggests, it’s got a carbon frame. it’s utilizing a mullet setup with a 29” front and 27.5” rear wheel, It’s got a Fox 36 Rhythm fork with 44mm offset and 160mm of travel. In the rear, the Levo is sporting a Fox Float X shock with 150mm of travel.
    The Gen 3 Levo utilizes the 2.2 version of the Specialized tuned Brose E-Bike motor, and this model comes equipped with a 700Wh battery.
    Specialized added an adjustable headset cup so you can choose between three head tube angles. With the factory setting at 64.5 degrees.
    The seat tube is 77.2 degrees, the chain stay is 442mm and an adjustable bottom bracket with a factory height of 350mm and the Reach on this S3 is 452mm.
    It’s got 160mm cranks, Sram Code RS brakes, Sram GX drivetrain with 34t chainring and a 12 speed 10-52t cassette.
    The weight of this Gen 3 Levo is 46.8 pounds.
    The current MSRP of this Comp Carbon model is $9,000.
    My Gen 1 2018 Specialized Turbo Levo Comp Carbon Levo is also a carbon frame, in size Medium, but it’s utilizing 27.5” wheels front and rear with plus size tires. It’s got a Rockshox Revleation fork with 51mm offset and 150mm of travel and the rear shock is a Rockshox Monarch with 135mm of travel.
    This Gen 1 is utilizing the 1.3 version of the Specialized tuned brose eBike motor and has a 504Wh battery.
    The head tube angle on this medium is 66.1 degrees, seat tube is 73.6 degrees, chain stay is 459mm in length and the bottom bracket is 340mm high and the Reach on this Medium is 411mm.
    It’s got 165mm cranks, Sram Guide RE brakes, Sram GX drivetrain with 32t chainring and an 11 speed 11-42t cassette.
    The MSRP of this bike in 2018 was $6,800, but I was able to find it slightly used on Craigslist for $3,200.
    Despite having a smaller battery, the weight of this Gen 1 Levo is a pound and a half heavier than the 22, coming in at 48.3 pounds
    We found that the new Gen 3 Turbo Levo has more range, a smoother motor, better suspension with longer travel, a slacker head tube angle, mullet wheel combo, shorter cranks, higher bottom bracket, shorter chain stays, longer wheelbase, shorter stem and a longer reach on this model. Essentially, the Gen3 Turbo Levo is better than the Gen 1 in basically every category.
    Instead of turning the Gen 1 2018 Levo in for a newer Gen 3 Levo, we’re going to spend the next 2 episodes seeing if we can update this Gen 1 Levo with better parts and see how it improves. Can we come close to the Gen3? Check in next episode and find out!

    Owning a Gen 2 Levo and a Gen 3 really would love to own a Gen 1 as well. Gen 2 is a real tourer, super relaxed, and feels like a lifted truck. The Gen 3 is the beast mode, ultra-fast and brutal, like a king of hammers unlimited truck.
    Great content, liked and subscribed.

    This was a well made video. Thanks for not installing a bunch of upgrades on the bike before reviewing it. Doing so makes reviews useless because it’s unlikely anyone will have exactly that combination of parts, and we are looking for info on bikes as we’d buy them from the store.

    Specialized killed gen1 Levos with software updates, i have 2 s-works gen1 and after my motor failed i took bike to shop they replaced motor but new motor is muted and as soon as motor gets warm/hot. I love gen1 especially with BLEvo app on original motor without updated software.

    Great video, you put into words what I thought when I had a 2018 & test rode the 2021, things just felt easier! However due to dodgy knees & back & the price of the new bikes I sold the 2018 for not much less than I paid 4years earlier & got a Sur-Ron 😂. May get another Levo if I hit a Lotto win! 😂

    After this review, I sold the Gen1 Levo and replaced it with a Gen2. Both have 500Wh batteries, but the Gen2 lasts much longer. There is no doubt that the Gen1 is still much nicer than the Gen2 and Gen3, but unfortunately it is an outdated piece. It is almost free on the market.

    I've ridden Epics for year and am now riding a Gen 3 Levo. Yes of course the power is great, but the bike is a great descender. I'm told it is the Stump Jumper frame. I don't know if I will ever ride my Epic again! Speed is fun!

      @Jan_Capek Před 6 měsíci

      @@THEBEANLORD4 Older levo don't need any hw hacks in order to increase its speed. Blevo app will do the trick and you can change it anytime and anyhow you want. ;)

  • @geekingoutwithshad
    @geekingoutwithshad Před rokem +3

    Are the older models not able to be upgraded at all? If not, there is a proprietary frame, motor, and battery. So what happens now? All that gets thrown away because someone wants the new version?
    I feel like the eBike boom is going to just create a lot more waste and that now adds a battery and electric motor.
    Especially all the low budget eBikes being sold now. I always felt the cheap Wal Mart bikes were just landfill bikes, but now there are all these low end crappy eBikes coming from China that are just going to fall apart.
    Hopefully Specialized has some sort of motor, frame and battery trade in policy that gives you a discount, similar to what phones companies do. If not they should absolutely start doing that.

      I have the same gen 3. I’ve had no issues so far. I keep my cadence around 85; it seems to be the sweet spot with efficiency and no motor noise. Bought on sale so I upgraded the brakes, suspension front and rear, cockpit, went with X01 axs; it’s a much better bike now than stock and still cheaper than the retail price.

  • @Tumid1
    @Tumid1 Před rokem +1

    Don't waste your money on the 2018 rebuild!! You made a whole video showing how the 2022's geometry, motor & battery make the 2022 a better bike & then you turn around & say you'll update the 2018; which you can't update ANY of those parts.
    All you'll be doing is spending $ 2,000 - $ 3, 000+ on suspension, brakes etc. to make a marginal improvement...ie. lipstick on a pig.

    • @ElectricCycleRider
      @ElectricCycleRider  Před rokem +1

      @Malicious Compliance Haha! Lipstick on a pig might be a bit of a stretch! The 2018 is still a great bike but the 2022 is definitely ahead of it. You're right, we can't change motor and battery, for sure. Some modifications may slightly change geometry but we will save that for the next video.

    • @Tumid1
      @Tumid1 Před rokem +2

      @@ElectricCycleRider My first ebike was a 2018 Moustasche, then I bought a 2021 Mondraker. To an experienced rider the differences can't be equalized with superficial changes...technology has improved. 2018 was the first generation of mass produced ebikes & new geo, motors & batteries are just...better.
      A clean 2018 ebike is probaly worth about $ 3,000 today, so why would anyone who has one put another $ 3,000 into it when they can sell it & buy a decent new bike for $ 6,000 ? No one would buy a 2018 today & then put $ 3,000 in upgrades into it. A 2018 that was $ 8,000 new today at $ 3,000 is definately a better buy in terms of performance/componentry than a new $ 3,000 bike.
      A better project would be to start with your $ 6,800 bike & see how little you could put into it to equal the performance of a $ 15,000 S-Works.
