  • BJ is now 10. She was first seen in our office when she was 2. At that point, her parents notice that her right eye turned in. The eye turn in (Esotropia) began when she was 1 year old. At that visit, we discussed various options and strongly recommended against Strabismus Surgery. Strabismus surgery is often touted as a surgery to "correct" where the eyes point. Strabismus Surgery rarely works. When the eyes turn once again, after surgery, ophthalmologists then recommend a second, third or even more surgery. Many people realize, too late, that strabismus surgery often has poor outcome. The intent is to make the child appear to others as though the eye is straight, but eye position is controlled by the brain and the brain controls where the eyes position. Trying to modify where the muscles are inserted, rarely yields long term benefits. The damage is done. Vision Therapy is brain based, and its purpose is to re-habilitate a now damaged system. Once surgery is done, it requires considerable effort to undo some the damage done.
    BJ ultimately had strabismus surgery.
Bianca wears prism eyeglasses and is now able to read faster and is doing things faster. Her parents note that there are a lot of improvements. Her handwriting is neater and she is able to work for long periods. She has better coordination and is able to comprehend reading materials better.
She has made huge gains through Vision Therapy, to undo the damage of Strabismus surgery, and has improved, but will need further therapy.
We are glad that we have been able to help, but she will need additional therapy to help her gain the ability to use her two eyes together as a team.
If you have a child with strabismus, sometimes mis-labeled as Lazy Eye, please consider seeing a doctor who sees many children and is expert in vision development; a Developmental or a Behavioral Optometrist.
