  • TfL asked us down to a depot near Ilford where drivers are being trained up on the new Class 345 trains - some of which are already in operation. It meant that we got to see a simulated version of what the the new tunnels look like...

    Yeah, as a train driver I've spent quite a lot of time in a similar kind of simulator. The graphics aren't quite as good as a modern gaming pc might be able to offer, but it's reasonably convincing so as to give you an idea of what it's like to drive the real thing.

    • @tpmiranda
      @tpmiranda Před 6 lety

      Sadly in Portugal they have to open a newly refurbished line weeks after training has been done, because simulators are a thing of the past (80's and 90's actually).

    • @laju
      @laju Před 6 lety +5

      In fact, I found it more difficult in a simulator than driving the real thing, because you don't experience acceleration/deceleration yourself.

    I know this isn't the popular opinion but I'm gonna call it the Elizabeth line because that's what everyone else will be calling it! All the other Londoners who don't happen to be transport nerds! Yes it would be nice if we called it Crossrail, but remember, we're still getting a cross-London railway at the end of the day, they can call it whatever they like and I'd still be happy. Remember that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. It does lend to the problem, though, of what to call Crossrail 2! Another Royal-themed name, or something else entirely? In London's future I see a sort of blurring of all modes of transport, where it doesn't matter what 'mode' you're riding strictly: Underground, Overground, Crossrail, DLR, or Tram. As long as the service frequency and quality is there in the majority of stations, let them all go by 'line' names, if it means Londoners feel they have a more frictionless way to transfer between modes.
    Part of the big point of Crossrail is to take travellers off the Central line. We know from Thameslink, that even though it is known about as an alternative to the Northern line, between say Elephant & Castle and Kentish Town, because it feels like National Rail, travellers probably stay away as they feel it's too much of a hassle to change between tube and National Rail and tube again. TfL want Crossrail to basically feel like the twelfth tube line between Ealing Bdy and Stratford/Abbey Wood, naming it a line makes it a mental shift toward getting more people to use it as an alternative to the already packed Central line and maybe even some east-west journeys on the Circle line. I think if it gets the foot traffic to be balanced, it's a good move no matter if we disagree.
