2023 Honda Civic eHEV review - Surprisingly Sporty... For A Hybrid

  • Honda decided to only offer the eleventh generation Civic in Europe as a hybrid hatchback. The sedan is no longer available on the Old Continent and you can't get the slickl-shifting six-speed manual gearbox here any more either. The latter made me worry that the new Civic wouldn't be fun to drive any more. However, after driving it for a few days, I can safely say it's still fun even as a hybrid and it's also better than the vehicle it replaces in every measurable way, plus it looks better and more grown-up both inside and out.

Excellent review. This is far and away the best review I’ve seen to date of the Civic e:HEV. You cleared up a few things for me that no one else has, such as when the fake gear changes operate and when they don’t. No one else I know of has mentioned that. That CVT-like droning would drive me nuts. Thank you.

The high speed refinement is average, but ok overall. It was not as quiet as the Peugeot 308 ar highway speeds, for instance, but it was better than the Mazda 3 (comparing to rivals that i’ve recently driven).
The standard sound system is quite good, to be honest - thanks to the tweeters you get very nice high sounds and good clarity. I wouldn’t bother with the optional setup unless you want some extra bass, because that’s what it mainly delivers more of.

Cheers from America! Great review. My son has a '22 Civic Sport Hatchback. Super nice car. I am in the hunt for a small hybrid vehicle like the one in this video. I understand this hybrid Civic will be coming to the States for the 2024 MY. I am also looking at the Corolla Hybrid AWD. It is very low price at mid to upper $20,000 US Dollars. I find it hard to believe that Honda America will have the 2024 Civic Hybrid priced competitively with the Corolla. While the Honda looks and probably drives better than the Corolla, the lower price on the Corolla may win out.

Thanks for watching! I've yet to drive the very latest Corolla, but most newer Toyotas actually drive better than you expect. For me the biggest suprise is the color of your test car. What is it? It's not definetly the red one that i see on catalogue. I've made an order for that car, but I've changed the decision after 4 months because of delays in production, too small space for my family 2+2 (no option for skis) and no space for the spare wheel. I've chosen Lexus ES 300h which will be ready in 2 weeks after an order. For me Honda is a little bit too expensive, an additional cost for the large Lexus limousine is not big. Greetings from Poland.

      Hi Wojkos,
I totally get why you went for the bigger car, although the ES300h is a big boat. There's nothing sporty about the way it drives. It's an amazing cruiser, sure, but it leans in the corners and it just feels soft. I actually reviewed it on the channel a while back and really loved it.

In Ireland there is only the Advance spec and it's 50k euro. A BMW 118i M Sport automatic with Harman Kardon and the bigger brakes would also be about 50k euro. A 120d would be something like 56k.
I wonder, if you had to pick, would you the Civic in top spec or a 118i M Sport?

I did watch your 128ti review ✌️. I'd love a 128ti, but here is Ireland, a 3 year old😋128ti is something like 45k 🙈. We really get screwed on car prices here 🤯.
Thank you for your opinion! I guess I'll have to go with the 1 series. I currently drive a 118d F20, so it would be natural for me to get into F40, I just wish the 120d wasn't so much more expensive than a 118i ☹️. The reason I was considering the Civic is the acceleration (in sport mode it's similar to a 120d) and the nice suspension.

@@SuncanoMore Well, if you think about this car as an EV that instead of a big battery pack, it uses a combustion engine generator instead, then you're on the right track. The engine is almost never connected to the wheels, and the Civic e:hev feels like an EV, but with some combustion engine sound playing in the background.

@@OneTireFire im interested in the Civic as my next car. I need a car mostly for city and country roads at 100kmh speed.
The civic seems to be good for this scenario but 2 times per year i do a longer journey for about 2500km back and forth. My average speed is about 140-150 kmh for let's say 10 hours straight. So if the petrol engine revs at 6000rpm to let the car run his max speed 180, it would rev to high at 150kmh for my taste and the longevity.
      That's what I'm curious about.

    • @OneTireFire

    • @OneTireFire
      @OneTireFire  Před rokem +1

Yeah, this is a solution that's unique to Honda. The car doesn't have a transmission, only a direct drive from the engine to the wheels. It uses a clutch to engage and disengage the engine at speeds of over 75 km/h. Honda may call the transmission in its eHEV hybrids an eCVT, but it's not actually a variable ratio transmission - it just kind of acts like one.
