    a. In the archive go to “/1/Windows/boot/efi”
    b. Copy file bootmgfw.efi to “/efi/boot” on USB Drive
    7) Rename bootmgfw.efi to bootx64.efi in “/efi/boot”

Wow, Thank you so much. I was hitting my head against a wall trying to get a recovery disk to run - - running the normal recovery disks on the UEFI without doing these steps runs fine until you try to repair at which point it tells you the OS version is incorrect. As soon as I added the extra steps to the recovery disk it worked perfectly -- Thank you Again!

The last step 8 is not necessary.
Also, the description should make it clear that only Windows 7 64-bit supports UEFI-booting so you must use a 64-bit version (not 32-bit).
You can use RMPrepUSB to format a large USB drive as FAT32. Tick the 'Boot as HDD' option.

In case anyone is still trying to use this video: I don't think he said explicitly but this only works with x64 versions of win 7 (thus the x64 part of the file name bootx64.efi). If you can't find any EFI folders or files it's probably because you're looking at a 32 bit version.

Yes, there is an easy way. Use Macrium Reflect its free, to clone the boot drive to a file, then copy that image file to the new drive. You may have to resize some of the data partitions, but I've done it many times and it works fine.

      2. Will my pc detect it and boot from it upon startup with out a fresh install of windows 7?
      3. Will i have to start my PC in a different BIOS setting with the m2 SSD card upon boot?
      4. What LGA 2011 MOB would you recommend is best for this task and will have no issues booting from an M2 card? (im upgrading my MOB with out a fresh install)

David Montenegro+Tanmay Agrawal It's because of the Fat32 filesystem 4Gb largest file limit.
You can't put more than 4Gb large file on a Fat32 filesystem. Use ntfs instead.

Does it have to be FAT32? I have a custom 'install.wim' file which is approx 12.5GB (updated as of 27th oct as well as software) so it wont copy, will this still work with ntfs format?

    • @michel_someone
      @michel_someone Před 6 lety

Auld Crow I think whatever (fat32 or NTFS). However, to me it only worked in a GPT format flash drive boot. That is the point. I figured out that Flash drive boot using a MBR format doesn't Work, unless your PC owns a hibrid "BIOS" Format (UEFI AND No-UEFI) or Legacy bios (no-UEFI) at all. I use Rufus aplication to build a flash drive boot.

You can get it from a Windows 8.1 or 10 ISO, if a bootable USB drive has been created. the 'efi' file is a part of these OS's that can be freely downloaded. I'm not sure that we can link a download to a standalone 'efi' file, even if one exists for such. This isn't The Pirate Bay, so we can't 'disassemble' Windows & offer to upload a portion, otherwise Microsoft would be swarming us like sharks in an ocean. Just follow the tutorial, or find one a bit easier to understand. For me, my first attempt didn't go through either, am a hardware enthusiast, not as good on the software end, other than to install drivers, slipstreaming where needed & post install of drivers. At any rate, my Windows 7 UEFI install is running great, although if I had it to do over again, since am dual booting both OS's, would had created the MSR & system partitions with W10, created the needed space for Windows 7, also 10, then back out of that install & go for the W7 one. That way, all of the needed partitions, (3 or 4) to include one small amount of unformatted space, as well as another in FAT32, would be in the front prior to the W7 install, then W10, lastly Linux Mint 18.1. Plus the system partition would be 500MB, not 100MB. Unfortunately, I didn't consider that when I first installed Windows 7, was my first setup of a dual boot of W7 & 10 (tri-boot if LInux Mint is counted). You'll get the experience that you need in due time, you simply must persue the answer in a way that you can understand. Few, if any of these Tutorials, are going to offer download links to these files, it's against the Windows license to disassemble, reverse engineer (even if that means a positive outcome), we're not speaking of Linux OS's here, where everything is 100% free, rather a proprietary OS in Windows. It's not the way we like it, rather the way things are. Cat

I have this problem and looking for a way to extract somme files not all the image, perhaps with DISM.exe mount and extract the files you need.
You have to clean your mount-point after all the opération if not the folder will still remain on your disk and no way to remove it just clean mount-point with DISM.
There is an alternative to command line for DISM it's in the windows AIK package.

Duc Marron hey man thanks for your reply! after a few days of killing myself over this, I went ahead and installed windows 10 without problems.......I explained to Microsoft support that win7 wouldn't install for me and so they confirmed the validity of my win7 product key and gave me a win10 key.
