- How to Dual Boot Windows 7 and Windows 10
Before you begin I recommend you do a full backup of your data.
If you are looking to dual boot Windows 10 with Windows 7 already installed, then this video is for you. You can create this dual-boot system from pretty much any version of Windows I am going to show you how easy it is to dual boot both these operating systems, you will get a menu where you can choose to boot into Windows 7 or Windows 10.
We will need to make sure we have a partition or another hard drive for our dual boot to work correctly. You can create a new partition on your hard drive using the Windows Disk Management Utility, this is easy to do in by shrinking the volume .

Without doubt, the simplest and most well thout-out tutorial I have ever seen. No rambling, no mistakes that need to be reversed, no unexpected errors...just what I needed. Congratulations, Brian - you have another subscriber. Thank you.
i have win 10 on my hdd , i am buying sdd to install windows 7 on it , i dont want to loose anything from win 10 ( i have all projects there ) i can not migrate data cuz , projects won't open accurately on new windows ,
i want to know is that possible to run both 10 and 7 at once , i tried months ago , all i know hard disk must be format to different types for each windows .

Well i lost windows 10 in the process. I guess.
After trying to boot in the bios i can no longer boot into win10 and the hard drive doesn't appear in the bios. My guess is that the hard drive is dead, weird.
Nope it doesn't need to be different format They both use NTFS What is different is the bootmgr.ini file and the windows/Users folder

hi checkmark
I love the rolling cube logo. Also I've seen similar videos showing the same steps but yours is much more professional.
Excellent video keeping windows 7 as long as possible but it's great to have windows 10 all updated and customized and ready to go.
Great job Bri.
please let me know how to setup my compute that has two hard drives each own operating system to show a menu that enables you to select what drive you want to boot and not have to press f8 every time i will appreciate it . thanks

Hey Brian - thanks for taking the time and effort to product this excellent, easy to understand and follow, video tutorial on how to properly install both Windows 10 and Windows 7 on a single hard drive for dual operating systems. Keep up the good work!
MATE I LOVE YOU!!! I wanted to keep windows 7 for my older much loved games but needed windows 10 for work and I was at a very sad low point in my life thinking I had to remove 7 😂 so thank you very much!
Fantastico ! Even at this late stage ''April 2020'', Ive been forced to look at a solution to keeping my beloved W7 but needing W10 for new programs. Thank goodness I found your Video ! Thank You !
followed your instruction - to the tee - I now have a dual boot system. thanks man
If we have other partitions can we access them through the newly installed windows?
My issue is, I have win 7 on one drive and 10 on another drive, how do I have the option to choose win 10 or 7 without going into bios everytime.
I can't explain it in words that how much it helped me Bri, You are doing a great job, keep it up.
I did this but instead of installing windows 10 I installed windows 7 and it worked. Thanks!
Excellent video, thank you Britec. As the deadline approaches for the end of Windows 7 support I need to get my butt in gear with this, and there's no way I want to lose my loved Windows 7 OS!
EDIT: After creating a new partition for Windows 10, I noticed that it was a Logical Partition, not a Primary Partition. I used the program by EaseUS called Partition Master Free to change this
Dual Boot Steps:
1. Get ISO File
2. Disk Management
3. Shrink Volume
4. New Simple Volume
5. Change Boot Order
Is there a way to make this dual boot screen appear if you install two windows on two disks? Or do you have to select the disk you want each time from the bios?

Please consider, Brian, a video showing how to dual boot, where the C:\ is on the PC as Windows 10, and Windows 7 is on an external drive. Thanks for all your great tutorials, Jan.
Great tutorial. Exactly what I am in the process of doing myself-already have Windows 7 and installing Windows 10 on a separate Drive.
Did u do it?
@@A_Guy_with_Ribbon Yes I did. It is working just fine.
@@powerflex500 do u recomand this on ur main pc just for fun?
@@A_Guy_with_Ribbon I did it because a lot of the newer programs are no longer supporting Windows 7. I prefer windows 7 but I wanted to have Windows 10 as an option. Perfect example. Since posting my comment I can answer yes to my own question. I now have a dual boot Windows 7 and 10 system. Thanks again for the video upload.
Do you only get this dual boot screen when both OS are on a single hdd/ssd? I'm guessing you have to use the bios to boot each OS if they're on different drives?
I've bought a budget modern pc with Windows 10, but I want to fit everything from my Windows 7 PC to the new motherboard (dedicated graphics card, extra Ram, smaller hdd, even a floppy drive.) I'm just wondering if it's best to have both 7 & 10 on the same drive partitioned or separate, and if the former, is it better to use the smaller hdd for the OSs? Thanks.
In my dual boot I have Windows 7 & 10 but have other unwanted drives showing up that I can't get rid of in EasyBCD. Any tips on how to solve this please?
Surely did enjoy the lesson video. I'll proceed to doing the same thing with my system. Have a freshly installed and formatted TB drive. Thanks and Jesus loves you, John 3:16-17 (KJV)
God be with you sir
I did not install the 2 OS into dual boot mode, but installed them separately in 2 HDD and SSD, but no way I could boot up the Win7 even if I chose to boot up the OS in the selected HDD, I set it up in the BIOS CMOS to boot up the Win7, so I assumed the new hardware system always choose to boot up Windows 10 in the SSD for no matters which HDD I had chose to boot up the OS with !
Thank you for the Tutorial! I successfully Installed Windows 10 on Windows Vista computer. :D

Can you do the same thing with Ubuntu Linux? I have an old Windows 7 laptop and now that it lost support, I want to be able to dual boot into Ubuntu. Is this possible?
i want to ask. what if i dual boot the same os but different architecture (being said home and pro, 32 and 64). is it possible?
I missed the bit about installing on two separate Hard Drives.
Why did you capitalize hard drives
Very informative video and thank you for uploading. Is it possible to do the reverse by already having Windows 10 installed and retrospectively installing Windows 7 or XP etc?

Just need to do this but installing Win 10 on a new disc (ssd), not on the same disc. Is it possible using the Migrate OS to SSD/HD function from the Mini Partition Wizzard program?
the problem is when I install something in the other os it install it's parts on the primary drive not the one I made for it. what to do there?
@Britec09. Hi Brian, great video by the way. Just wanted to ask if it works exactly the same for PC's that have 10 Pro installed but I'm gonna be adding windows 7 Pro to the same HDD/SSD. I believe it is, just wanted to make sure prior to starting this whole thing. Thanks again for the great video. It was really helpful, especially for people who haven't made dual boot PC's before. I have & it's really cool.
Can you have like two windows 10 operating systems running in the same hdd or ssd?
yes, but why would you do that? One partition for hacking and the other for normal stuff?
If I were to do this, will all programs currently installed on any hard drive/partition along with any files currently anywhere
be able to be accessed while in Windows 10 or Windows7? Including games.
Will any such programs need updates (if they exist) in order to run with Windows 10, or can they be utilized as they currently are?

The main reasons to use windows 7 over windows 10
1). Windows 7 is stable
2). It is compatible with a lot of programs that worked for windows xp
3). It does not spy on you or force computer breaking updates on you. ( yes I am talking about the windows ten update 1903)
4). You still have control over your computer and not Microsoft. So no spyware
5). It is a great operating system
The main reasons to use windows 10 over windows 7
1). Windows 10 is stable (no bugs for me)
2). It is compatible with all of the legacy programs that i've tested so far
3). Windows 7 also spy on you since 2015 with the same telmetry processes
4). The UI is much better

I didn't know that you can have both microsoft windows operating systems.
You can have all ms os at once
Quick question : Does it take more time to start Win7/10 AFTER dual booting as compared to a single OS?
I have a PC with Win 7 and it boots very fast.
On the same machine when I freshly install just Win 10, the system boots up quite quickly.
However when I dual boot Win 7 & Win 10 (Win 7 first then Win 10), the boot times are quite high.
Both the OS's start without issues but it takes a long time (30 secs) to first show the OS selection and then launching the selected OS (another min or so).
I use EasyBCD to set the boot menu.
Thanks.
When you dual boot from seperate partitions, can you access all the files on every partition in both Windows 7 and Windows 10? Eg. If 7 is in C and 10 s on D, when running Windows 7 can i access files on D without it screwing with the system?

Thanks so much Britec09, I'm seeing a lot of questions about this install and maybe my experience with the GPT and MBR part of it can help someone as well. I couldn't make my transition to Dual Boot to work with a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro on an new SSD with GPT and my existing Windows 7 on a 7200rpm HDD with original MBR on my laptop with 2 separate hard drives (Yes, my laptop has 2 HDD slots and I couldn't switch my original HDD from MBR to GPT). So when I Simple Initialized my new SSD (remembering to name it "Windows 10" like he suggested) I chose MBR and it worked great. When I booted into the new Windows 10 Pro hard drive, I was pleased to see that my original Windows 7 containing HDD showed up as a C/: drive, and I could access all my downloaded content through Windows 10. Sweet! I did not know that. I love that I can go back and forth between operating systems and use some of my old programs that I can't get any more when I'm booted on Windows 7. Thanks for this video Britec09
i had installed ubuntu and windows side by side ,while starting my dell laptops choice of os is not showing???
How the hell do you have a floppy disk in this day and age?
THE GAMING EXPERT Using roblox mods xddddd
roblox mods? your series?
hes using virtualbox or some emulating software
THE GAMING EXPERT it is always in bios. even if you don't have it.
@nizzy storm, there is his thing called an external floppy disk reader
This is all very incorrect. Both Windows 7 and Windows 10 (nowadays) install an extra 3 partitions in front of the disk. The way you've done it is only possible in a virtual environment. As is shown often by others, since W10 wants to install using GPT, and most Win7 users have it on an MBR disk, this causes all kinds of messy troubles. Not to mention the required BIOS settings for newer boards are completely sucky for dual boot options on an NVMe SSD for example. In short: It's a complete mess, all thanks to the shit dev team 10 of Microsoft, where they can't even fix a broken bcd with their 'Startup repair', while every dumb user can see both *active* Windows partitions by commandline. Apparently only idiots work at Microsoft these days.
Oooh, I dislike Windows 10 a little aswell, yet it's nice to have since it's the newest OS by Microsoft and everything just wants windows 10
You shouldn't call them "idiots". It was completely intentional. They want to make dual booting as difficult as humanly possible so that the average person won't risk screwing up their system to try an alternative OS.
Intentional or not, they're still idiots for doing so. The "average" person will still screw up the system. It always happens.
I think you misunderstood, although I could have been more clear. What I meant was, the average person won't risk setting up any kind of dual boot for fear of breaking their computer. Doing so seems highly technical to the average person. And very few people are willing to outright delete their windows installation. My point was, the design is intended to intimidate people into not giving alternative operating systems a try. All in the name of keeping them "safe". Its a cut throat business decision to ensure their (effective) monopoly on the market share.
According to microsoft you "can" dual-boot by installing Windows 10 first. Windows 7 can be installed using a GPT layout afterwards. But i think this is only limited to 64-bit versions of Windows 7.
Well done Brian. Do I follow same procedure to install Windows 10 if my C: drive is already half partitioned with Windows 7 and Ubuntu Mate 16.04?
