    Instructions on Replacing the Gas Cylinder on a Steelcase Criterion chair.
    Removing the Original Cylinder
    1. First start by inverting the chair. This process does require some forceful measures, so make sure your chair is in a secure position before starting.
    2. Next, you’ll need to remove the gold clip holding the base and casters to the cylinder. This part can easily be pried off with a flathead screwdriver.
    3. After the clip has been removed, release the plastic accordion tube from the bottom of the chair and lift the entire assembly up and off the chair to expose the cylinder.
    4. To remove the cylinder, you’ll need to remove the black, spoked lock rings. These need to be pried out by force with either a screw driver or an awl. Don’t worry about breaking them, they won’t be reused.
    5. Once the two lock rings are removed, the cylinder can be lifted from its housing and out of the chair. Any spare bearing hardware can be set aside, it will be thrown away at the end of the project but wait to do so until your chair is working properly again.
    6. It’s very unlikely, but if the plastic white cap comes out of the cylinder housing, it just needs to be dropped back in with the button first.
    Reinstalling a new cylinder
    1. Place the new cylinder into the housing tube with the thin black end extending out of the tube.
    2. Next, install the silver washer to keep the cylinder from moving around.
    3. Now you can install the new lock rings. You’ll need either a 5/8” deep well socket or a piece of 1/2” pipe to set these rings. One ring at a time, set them over the silver washer and hit them down into the housing using either the socket or pipe and a hammer.
    4. Once your lock rings are holding solid, test your cylinder by activating the height adjustment lever, it should extend outwards.
    5. Now it’s time to install the bearing kit. The order of installation is rubber stopper first, then black washer, bearing ring, and another black washer. The stopper can be at any height on the cylinder shaft while the bearings and washers will rest on the top.
    6. Carefully reinstall the base and casters by lowering it back onto the cylinder and re-secure the accordion tube.
    7. Lastly, reinstall the extra silver washer (if there is one) and the gold clip to hold everything together. And that’s it folks!

    Your video was great. I was able to replace my cylinder with minimal stress since I was able to easily follow your instructions. Crandall Office Furniture's price was half of what I would have paid compared to my local (Portland, OR) retail supplier. My chair is no longer "spongy"!

    Thank you so much for putting this video together! A very well presented how-to! I've already got my new cylinder in hand and will be replacing it tomorrow. I love my old Criterion chair. No other chair has fit me so perfectly.

    Thank you for the clear instructions in the video. I was able to replace my cylinder in 5-10 mins after the parts arrived today. Worked like a charm. Love that I am able to give this old chair new life and keep it out of the landfill.

    Thanks, this work great. My chair is older and PVC pipe would not fit. Was able to install the lock washers hammering on a screwdriver to get them set

    Hello! Nice short video, straight to the point. My question is. Can you change the type of cylinder from this one to the other kind. I have no idea what the names are. But I want the type that does not have the pipe housing at the bottom of the chair. This one has a cylinder inserted into a pipe like the one I currently have.

    Hi Mike & Crandall Office Furniture. Thanks for the video. I was wondering if you could help me troubleshoot my issue. My Criterion chair seems to have more of a problem with the brake or whatever mechanism keeps it in place when trying to adjust for height. It'll go down to the bottom when I sit, but spring right back up when I get up. At times I can lock it into a position midway, but as soon as I get up it unlocks and I have to play it with for a while until I get it to lock midway again. Any ideas on how to fix that? Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

      Hi there - is this an factory cylinder or one of our replacements you have in the chair?

    • @missnessnyc
      @missnessnyc Před 3 lety

      @@CrandallOfficeFurniture Thanks for the response! I'm not sure if the cylinder is the original because I bought the chair used and I haven't dared taking it apart yet. The issue started happening after a move in which the chair got a bit banged up (gosh, they're heavy!), so I wonder if something got dislocated when the chair was hit. :/

      @CrandallOfficeFurniture  Před 3 lety +1

      @@missnessnyc Not sure exactly what happened there, but I would try removing and re-installing the gas cylinder and see if that helps solve the issue - if it doesn't you may just need a replacement cylinder.

      @@CrandallOfficeFurniture Thanks so much; I'll try to reinstall it and see what happens. And thanks so much for posting just a great demonstration on how to remove and install the cylinder. It makes the task much less daunting for someone like me.
