    I cannot WAIT to try the bucket. I've been beating on the cylinder of my chair - which is brand new and I am returning it - but have to break it down to ship it ---- here's hoping the bucket will work. Genius. Thanks for a great video!

      Also before beating the cylinder out. Apply a small amount of WD40 where it makes contact with old cylinder. Give it about 5 minutes for the oil to creep into edges. Our chair was more than 10 years old and was tightly lodged in place. The oil helped loosen the cylinder 👍

    I and all my friends have used my office chair for over 10 years. I way 96 kilos and I used a pipe wrench that's 49 cm from the bottom jaw to the end of the handle and I had to almost put my entire weight to manage to break it loose. Now that's tight.

      @@AroundTheHome1 You're welcome! It's content like yours that are very helpful to the community. I was able to replace the gas lift cylinder this afternoon. The old cylinder was stuck in the base of the chair.
      I was able to get it out after dozens of blows to the old cylinder with a combination of a mallet and hammer.
      One trick I discovered for stubborn old cylinders stuck in the base is to use olive oil (let it sit for 10-15 minutes), and hit the sides of the old cylinder with a hammer (not too hard, do not bend or damage the cylinder) to loosen it up. Then I took three to four strikes to the center of the cylinder with a hammer and it fell out. I was about to give up. It felt like I was at a CrossFit tryout.. lol.

    I added this comment to another video showing how easy the repair was. Well not always:
    I just did my older high quality desk chair. It took 2 days. The bottom wheel carriage came off easily enough I guess, but then......
    I soaked the part that goes to seat portion in Wd and PB Blaster, No Joy, and I have a large 18" pipe wrench. Tried it again after soaking overnight. No joy. I was putting so much force on it I was afraid I'd break the rest of the chair. I then removed the seat adjustment mechanism from the seat and put it in a large heavy vice so I could hold it in place better. No joy. Then I clamped the cylinder in the vice and tried a HF hydraulic spreader to try and pop it off while wailing on it first with a dead blow, then with a 4lb sledge, but no joy. I went back to the internet thinking maybe mine was bolted or welded on, but no. Finally, I took some of the more fragile parts off of the mechanism took it out side, placed a board on the ground and placed it on the board and then used the front end loader on my tractor to hold it down. I then put a 4' cheater pipe on the pipe wrench handle and gave it everything I had. Joy!!! My chair is now fixed and works great again. All you need is a tractor with a front end loader and a few thousand pounds of weight and 4' pipe wrench and 220lbs of fat man and it comes right off as easy as pie.

    Great video!! You never said why you are replacing the entire shock, which can be expense. If you have a sinking chair issue, here is a simple, $2.40 Home Depot fix!!

    • @AroundTheHome1
      @AroundTheHome1  Před 2 lety +1

      Well, sometimes they go out and wont stay up. That is the most common reason. Now, on mine, it was just always a little short. This specific replacement added like 4 inches which put the chair at the proper height for our desk. The replacement shock is $22.99. Not bad in my opinion. And it works better too. You can feel a difference, not just in the height.

    So the base of the cylinder on ours is flush similar to the how yours looked after you put the new one in. Any idea how to pound out the cylinder when it doesn't stick an inch through the bottom? I'm worried about hitting the center since I can't hit straight on the edges.

    • @AroundTheHome1
      @AroundTheHome1  Před rokem

      Yes I would get a short, but fat piece of metal pipe to use as a spacer. One you know, long enough to hold onto and still hit without crushing your fingers. Or maybe a piece of hardwood wooden dowel. Hopefully that helps.

    I believe some SHOCKs vary in Height or Lenth size? Mine is to Tall or High for my Needs & need to shorten the Height. I will look on Amazon to see if smaller sized Shocks exist? Goal is to make my Office Chair smaler in Height, cause its to High. Thks for your Video. It Helps

    My column is really stuck and doesn't stick out the bottom like this chair. I use rubber mallet, small hammer and normal hammer. The lifter came out but column is still stuck. I have used penetrating oil but still stuck. I'm trying to avoid replacing the base. Any suggestions?

    • @AroundTheHome1
      @AroundTheHome1  Před rokem

      Yes. The first one that comes to mind is getting a wooden dowel to hold against the shock. That way you can hit that since you said it doesn't stick out of the bottom. You would want a hardwood, probably oak. And one that was almost as wide around and probably only about 8 inches long. Enough to hold onto well, with just a little extra to hit. You will probably also need a heavier hammer then. If the hammer is too light you will try and go superman on it and then you would be more likely to hurt yourself. A small sledge hammer has the weight to do the job, without you having to put a lot of force into it. I hope that helps and good luck.

    I tried what you said but thinking my hammer isn't heavy duty enough to knock the shock out of the base. Will go to the big box store and see how much a sledge hammer and a 5 gallon bucket costs.

      Single hand sledge hammers aren't very much. You might even find one on clearance.
