- In this video, I show you how to fix an office chair that sinks down when you sit in it. This is the result of the cylinder failing and not holding pressure. (The cylinder is is gas / pneumatic, not hydraulic.) The chair can be securely set at a fixed height by modifying the cylinder. This fix is safe, fast, easy, and inexpensive or free. It does not alter the appearance of the chair in any way; it looks exactly the same. Let’s repair a sinking office chair!

I did the extra work to provide understanding and multiple options (I apologize if I made it look complicated or confusing).
All you need is a one dollar pipe nipple of the correct length from the hardware store, and a flat head screwdriver. It literally takes about five minutes to install and complete.
Example:
www.homedepot.com/p/Southland-3-8-in-x-3-in-Black-Steel-Nipple-582-030HN/100192847
Or if you already own some existing pipe, you can cut something and make it work at no cost!
Well done on the video. It helped me out when i was about to throw my $100 chair out the window. I like all the options of fittings you provide and you go into detail about further processes. Nice video. 👍
I appreciated all your options shown so I could make the best choice for my chair. It was a very easy fix.
You explained it perfectly and I loved that you shared multiple solutions. I bet I have on hand all I need to fix mine!
Dude, that's perfect! I am making this repair myself right away! Thanks!
Awesome, glad you found it helpful!
You are my hero, I have this same chair and am in the same situation, I managed to use some 3/4 pvc pipe cut to length and filed down the plastic washer to fit inside the pipe like you showed and the chair is so firm and sturdy again, I have been dealing with this chair sinking for months now and finally have sweet sweet relief, thank you very much
My wifes chair has been collapsing for at least seven or more years now. I had a 1/2" nipple a little too short. So I added a coupler screwed tight and cut to proper length. Fixed in about 30 minutes. This is about one of the easiest solutions to a problem I have seen on CZcams yet. Just never though of a so simple fix. Thank a Lot
That’s perfect! Glad you found it helpful!
AMAZING VIDEO... precise, clearly spoken, to the point, with options available, and a conclusion. What more can a person ask for, really not much. Thanks 🙏 I am ready to fix my chair.
I appreciate it! Glad you found it helpful!
This was an Awesome fix!!! It was exactly what I was looking for! Easy to follow directions and the multiple options and diagram really helped. Thank you and keep up the good work! I'm subscribed and alerted 😁
Thanks, I appreciate it. Glad you found it helpful!
Wow! exactly what I needed! and your instructions were very clear, thank you so much for providing alternative fixes and taking the time to test them!!
Glad it helped!
I just finished making this repair to my chair. Works great! Thanks!!
Perfect! Glad you found it helpful!
I love you. No joke. i have been sitting on the same exact chair for the past 9 months without a proper fix and no money to buy a new one. I am 2meters and 2 cm's tall, and my chair wont raise anymore. Needless to say my backpain has been terrible and unbearable. So thank you, for the extra effort you put into this video. You have saved the spine of a 24 year old
Awesome! Happy to hear that. I created this channel to help people out. Glad you found it helpful!
Thanks so much for this. Like you, I prefer my chair all the way up. Not only did you save me the cost of a replacement gas cylinder, but while adding the pipe nipple I discovered why my chair was a bit wobbly. One of the washers inside was disintegrating. So that got fixed as well. Thanks again!
Nice! Glad it helped!
Perfect! My chair is fixed now - very much appreciate this vid!
I like how you said this isn't a cylinder replacement video but it actually gave me the knowledge to change out a brat of a cylinder that wouldn't just pop out of the base with a few rubber mallet strikes. Thank you!
Nice! Glad it helped!
This has been the best chair fix I’ve seen, I had all this stuff laying around my apartment ☺️ thanks again
Awesome! Glad it helped!
Best video of this Topic so far on the WEB, thank you buddy you Rock!
Thanks, I appreciate it! Glad you found it helpful!
of all the video i watch about changing gaslift chair, this video helps me out! thanks
This worked great for me. Thanks for being so clear and not wasting a lot of time at the start with irrelevancies.
Thanks, I appreciate it! Glad it helped!
Thank you! I fixed mine in a few minutes. I didn't have any of the tools and materials in the video, and thank God I had the idea to improvise with the hollow rubber part that comes with sewing threads. Sitting comfortably on it while I type this. Mucho thanks!!!
Very nice! Great job!
Vielen Dank !
This is perfect! Took me 7 minutes to fix my chair as you suggested including time to find some old pipe in the basement and cut it to size. I also saw other videos about replacing the whole gas cylinder which costs around $23 for a replacement on Amazon. I'll keep that in mind if I decide I miss the chair being adjustable.
Perfect! Glad it helped!
Brilliantly simple solution!
Thanks so much for this excellent solution!
Did not have to spend a single buck on making sure my old chair stays up in it's highest posistion!
You deserve all the thumbs up one can give!
Lol. Thanks, I appreciate it. Glad it helped!
I just used this method on my desk chair and am very happy with the results! Thank you for taking the time to make this video!
Nice! Glad it helped!

Awesome! Glad you found it helpful!
Hey, you’re the best. I was going to throw my chair away but then I saw your video. I found some spare heavy duty plastic spacers (from washing machine for shipping). Drilled them out so the piston would fit. Reinstalled the parts and my chair is comfortable again. Thanks
That’s perfect! Glad you found it helpful!
Brilliant - many thanks!
Worked perfect! Thank you for posting!
Awesome, glad it helped!
Mate you are an absolute champion! 5 minutes and an angle grinder on a piece of junk spring I had in the garage and my back, neck and wallet thanks you. Cheers from down under!
Prefect! Great job, and thanks for the update!
I bought a high end chair from a second hand store for $15 but the problem was as indicated in this video, it didn't go up or down. I solved the problem using the exact process outlined here. Amazing, and thank you.
Awesome! That’s a great find! Glad the video helped!
I recently got an office chair for free and it was a little beat up and the gas cylinder was busted so it sank constantly. I found this video and I got it fixed in under 10 minutes! Very useful thanks for the help!

I didn't have some of the extra things you mentioned, however we were able to DIY that part and my chair now fits firmer underneath me thank you very much

Worked like a charm. I fixed my chair with a $3 pipe nipple from HD. You saved me a lot of money. Many thanks.

Awesome!
Thank you for the video. Fixed my chair!! No more going down and up.
Awesome! Glad it helped!
Right on. I didn't have that brand of chair but the part that needs fixing was the same. I just found the metal tube from an old fan base by the dumpster. It was only an 1/8 bigger than the washers, so I called it good. Done. Thanks :)
Awesome, that’s perfect! Great job!
I'm very grateful for your advice, you helped me to save a bunch of money because I had 2 chairs with the same problem. Thanks a lot.
Great! Glad it helped!

That’s great to hear, glad you got it fixed at no cost! Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it!
Conveniently the hydraulic lifts on the GTRacing website were sold out(I wonder why) so I stumbled upon this video and I'm really glad that I did!
This was actually super easy and takes two minutes to do. Head over to lowes and head over to the plumbing section to find the pvc piping. You can find skinny 2' pipes for about 3 bucks and they'll even cut it down to the size you need in store. I also picked up about four half inch 'coupling' pieces. I ended up using 3 coupling pieces instead of the pipe because I forgot to account for the length of the bushings, so the pipe was about a half inch too long and I couldnt use it! Still worked perfectly fine with the coupling pieces and ended up saving myself 30 bucks THANK YOU!!!
Thanks for sharing, I appreciate it! Great job!
Thank you ! Great explanation and how to .
Glad it was helpful!
I have the exact same chair, and my piston/cylinder failed within 2 months! Thank you so much for passing along your wisdom!
Wow, that didn’t last long. Glad the video helped!

Awesome! Great job!
worked a charm! $3 fix :) Thank you.
Awesome! Glad it helped!
Thank you brother! I made this with my chair and now it's perfect. Thank you!
Great! Glad it helped!
Thanks for the great video! My gaming chair has recently started to sink, but only sometimes and only to a height that makes it slightly irritating to sit in. I tried to fix it by putting a hose clamp on the upper part of the cylinder at the desired height, but the clamp either moved under weight or broke when I tried to tighten it.
I never thought about using a pipe inside the cylinder itself. It's a rather ingenious solution to an irritating problem, in my opinion. I removed the lower cylinder as you showed in the video (it was easier than I expected), took some measurements, and went to the garage. I quickly found a pipe of the right width and cut it to the correct length. With just some electrical tape on the thin cylinder to keep it centered, the chair is like new again. I can't lower it, but since the maximum height is perfect for me, it doesn't really matter.
Thanks again for the great video!
That’s perfect! Glad the video helped, and great job!
Thank you for this!!! Super simple solution. Took me 5 mins to fix!!
Perfect! Glad it helped! Thanks for the update!
Excelent!!!!!! arreglé mi propia silla en menos de 15 min con los materiales adecuados. Muchas gracias.
Thanks a lot, this was great tutorial, really easy to follow! I would also like to recommend screw-nuts as option. I used about 15 screw nuts, since I didnt have tools to cut pipes, and it works perfectly!
Great idea! Just need to fill the gap with something structural. Great job!
Thanks dude. Never thought I'd be looking up something like this... great video!
Glad you found it helpful!
Best video, i saw on the topic. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing. Happy to help!
I like how you messed with several options. Most guys would have done it one way and sold it as the only way ... this gives me several ideas. Sweet. Good, direct, narration - thanks for scripting the narration and sticking to it. short and sweet. nicely done. JR
Thanks, I really appreciate it! I do script everything out in advance to insure that the information in my videos is well structured and thorough, without wasting time or missing information.
This is a very well constructed video.
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Thank you so much, no more sudden sinking jump scares, it took me less than 5 minutes to apply your fix. nearly tossed my chair for this exact problem. you're a life saver (and money) ♥
That’s great to hear! Great job, and thanks for the update!
Great video! Just got a new chair online and the gas lift was busted. They wanted me to pay for postage to get it fixed, but thanks to this video i fixed my chair for free :)
Glad it helped you out!
Great fix Great video. My barstools kept sliding down especially with overweight people. Watched your video and fixed my 4 stools. I used 3/4 EMT with a steel washer on either end. Cut them just a just about a 1/4 inch shorter so the piston still works a little. Works great!
Awesome! Glad you got it handled!
Awesome !!!!! After 2 year still very useful. Fixed my chair in no time. Thank you.
