    I put an AGM in my 2011 Jaguar XK. Imagine how many people have gotten ripped off by mechanics for low battery induced dashboard lights. Whenever you get multiple codes from different systems, always start off with the battery.

      Question... when is a battery truly dead ? A few years ago I got the dread call from my Wife " The car won't start [VW Touran] - there must be a problem with the steering, there's an orange steering wheel light showing on the dashboard - come immediately " luckily, she wasn't calling from the hard shoulder of a motorway - but from the car park of a local store. Started the car with the help of jump leads and went straight to my trusted parts shop, for a battery test. My man hooked up his test meter ( the one with the element that glows) and assured me that - there was no problem with the battery. OK. A couple of weeks passed by, still got starting problems, though not every time, together with the dash lit up . Took a deep breath and purchased a new VW battery, and .....success.
      Moral of the story? .....find a test meter that is accurate

    • @iamezza
      @iamezza Před 2 lety

      @@Elconbrioso One good test is to hook up a multimeter and see how low the voltage drops when trying to start the engine cold. A good battery should stay above at least 9V, a bad one can just instantly drop way low, even if you have charged it.

    If you take a typical spark plug "resistor" wire and measure it with an ohm meter, it may show 500-1000 ohms when new. In a few years that goes up to 5,000-10,000 ohms, still acceptable. But if it reaches 20,000 ohms, you'll see an increase in engine performance by replacing them. Long before the cracks or pinholes. An easy diagnostic that most shops ignore.

    Great video. I have a 2018 Challenger Hellcat Widebody that developed a paddle shifter issue: pulling the upshift paddle would often result in a down shift. Dealer couldn’t figure it out and said battery tested fine. But problem persisted. Then I thought to try connecting a battery tender up to the car and voilà, that INSTANTLY cured the paddle shift problem 100%. I’m going to replace the battery but I’ll still use the battery tender.

    Wizard: AGM is lead acid. What differentiates AGM is the acid is absorbed into a fiberglass mat that allows oxygen gas released during charging to migrate across and recombine with hydrogen to return to water. The advantage is not having to add water through out the life of the battery.
    There are lead acid AGM batteries on the market that will last well over 5 years. I have seen some 12 year old batteries still working fine and I have a couple that are 7&8 years old. These used to be sold as Sears Platinum but now you can buy them as Odyssey. Look at any Walmart or JD Hunt truck on the road and you will find a set of Odyssey batteries. They use them because they can get 1,000,000 miles and 5 years out of the truck without being stuck with dead batteries.

    • @JohnSmith-yv6eq
      @JohnSmith-yv6eq Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, your truck is doing 1 million miles...
      and the batteries are being kept near full all day and night long.
      This car showed no sign of having a CTEK battery charger having been attached...therefore the likelihood of being kept at peak condition is minimal while it is sitting for 6.5 years....and only 2000 miles?

    • @JDARJISJ
      @JDARJISJ Před 2 lety +1

      @@sc1338 Both hydrogen and oxygen are released during charging from decompostion of water. This is why flooded cell batteries require periodic water addition. Coworker's Chevy Cruze was dead in the parking lot, took about 3 of us to try and jump the car with no luck, battery was from 2018. Sure enough, he confirmed a battery test at his mechanic passed, but I knew from your wisdom the battery was toast. He was able to get back on the road with a new battery this week. For anyone reading this, take heed the Wizard's words, batteries that even pass the test can be bad, just get a new one after 5 years, modern cars are basically computers (I say this as a computer guy who's a diy mechanic), reliable electricity is a must these days.

    Next I plan a more advanced amateur level: cleaning a clogged AdBlue valve and changing the AdBlue heating unit...
