Yesterday was John Bercow's last day in his role as Speaker. Having sent 10 years in the chair, loads of MPs had a lot to say about Bercow's achievements. In this video, we listen to some of the MP's messages to Bercow as well as reflecting on what he's done as Speaker - and what he might do next.

I can't believe they actually had the balls to kill off a main cast member. A character that has been on the show longer than any other too.
I don't think they kicked him off, rather he just got tired and needed something new. It's like when Tennant left. They didn't kick him out, he left so someone else could take his spot.

@@alwinpriven2400 They kind of did. Johnson had plans to put up another Conservative so that Bercow might lose his spot. So instead of having to go through that trouble, Bercow chose his moment himself. It is a great loss, however you might view him.

Blu Gill I spoke to 2 different people who work in tldr news saying I’m related to bercows kids godmother. They said thanks and then never responded again. I assume that they scrapped the whole idea as it would have been very easy for me to get him that T-shirt

I had to verify this, because it was just too funny to be true, and it is!!! He has a cat names Order, and a tortoise named Shelley. He said this in an interview by the University of Essex in 2017

The video didn't really strike me hard until Bercow started tearfully saying his farewell. Now he just seems genuine.

Those people called him as a traitor and bully, although their MPs behaved badly and totally deserved a shut down from the Speaker.

@@tonydecastro6340 I'm not even a UK citizen. I have just been following the Brexit debacle from a far and neutral standpoint, so any assumptions you have made are wrong.
Where Brexit is concerned, he made it very clear he was pro-Remain and he even spoke to students about the topic. Regardless of whether pro or against Brexit, any speaker should be impartial and refuse to comment on such matters. Simple as that

I really hope his successor tries to live up to his legacy and uphold his precedents. Bercow was not only entertaining and well spoken, he was an ardent defender of the role of Parliament in governance and the protection of it's rights.
As an observer of this whole affair, I'll miss Speaker Bercow... I wish we had a speaker of his caliber here, and I hope those of you in the UK will be lucky enough to get another one in the future, though unfortunately I'm not sure that's likely.

Perhaps not too strangely he will be remembered fondly for his strong interventions and put downs. It might be a long time before there is another speaker anywhere near like him.

I think that's a very pertinent question. I suspect a bit of both but it does seem that the right is becoming more extreme, probably because it feels under threat from the general shift in Western countries towards the left. One day though I think we'll look back and wonder how the idea of access to healthcare was considered a leftist agenda rather than a basic human right.

Did Bercow become more left or did the conservatives stride towards the right to meet the brexit party in the middle? Hard to tell. I mean, when Boris Johnson rebelled against the Prime Minister, he was allowed to stay in the party. But rebelling against him leads to being removed from the party. Very hard to tell what would happen if you leave right wing extremist in a party and remove moderates.
Moods and the views have been polarized after referendum. I can tell you that Bercow really popularized British politics in Europe. I've heard about him for the first time in march 2019 and I'm from Poland.
sarowie Perhaps my perception of the man is incorrect but I don’t think Bercow necessarily came more to the left as Speaker, it’s just that he fought to protect the rights of Parliament and refused to let the government bully Parliament into the passage of laws where no actual majority exists, and since the government was Conservative for his entire tenure that made him appear more supportive of Labour, the next largest party. Of course as Speaker he shouldn’t just bend over and allow the government to do whatever it wants to Parliament, but a lot of Conservatives seem to think him a traitor for trying his best during some politically tumultuous times.

One can't see what happens behind the screens, so I won't speak on that. However, calling out the most powerful people in the country for being twats and not following the rules and decorum, that they otherwise stand up for when they can use it in their own advantage. Is not bullying. It's doing his damn job as speaker. Something all politicians should take note off. And if they don't like his light jabs, than they should come outside and hear what the people have to say about them, and then they'll learn the true meaning of bullying. Snowflakes the lot of them.

Whilst I don't condone bullying, I think it's bloody marvellous that MPs get a public dressing down if they step out of line. They need to be held accountable not only for their decisions and policies, but their behaviour as our employees and as human beings.

The truly great leaders are defined by how they rise to the occasion when difficulties occur. Bercow faced one of the greatest challenges his post can face and he rose to the challenge in a way few speakers would.
