    For the last two days MPs debated in the House of Commons, with the government pushing for a general election in December. In this video we discuss this 'Brexit' Election; why it's necessary and the stupidly complicated way that it ended up passing.

    I don’t like this season finale.... we were promised either a great departure or a dead man in a ditch but instead got a dragged out storyline with the cliffhanger being pushed back to next season. • @ThoriberoCaroli
      @ThoriberoCaroli Před 4 lety +2

      Indeed.
      Having an election based on one issue, then it might as well have had been a referendum instead.
      Now however, due to the wonderful first past the post system, a large part of the population actually wanting to vote on other issues, and some wanting a type of Brexit/remain but does not want to vote on the party which have that stance.
      This is going to end up with all interpreting the result according to their will, and no one really knowing what the British people really want...

There probably are more, maybe even a way to move them manually at some point, but afaik you can only choose how many are played. Mostly by accounts of length of the video. You failed to mention that Johnson was forced to request an extension by Parliament, therefore tying his hands, whilst at the same time conveniently glossed over the fact that Corbyn changed his mind about the election because he knew the bill had the necessary support and was going to pass whether Labour liked it or not. It was a politically expedient change of heart on their part, the justification Corbyn gave doesn't hold up, just a few days earlier when the EU had already agreed to the January 31st extension he stated that in order for Labour to support an election "No Deal" had to be COMPLETELY off the table.

      All bills in the UK Parliament go through the committee stage. The Finance Bill and many important bills go through what is called a committee of the whole house. This is where the entire House is considered part of the committee instead of the usual select committees that are made up of selected MPs to scrutinize bills.
      This is often for important bills that will have a big effect on the country and as the early general election will it was put to the whole house. The committee of the whole is not chaired by the Speaker by convention but by the deputy speakers, mainly the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee (Deputy Speaker). They do not sit in the chair and instead sit at the clerk table.

      The committee stage give MPs an opportunity to examine the bill line by line and debate the finer details of a bill. Committees are usually held in separate committee rooms, but for important bills it is held in the chamber and is referred to as the Committee of the Whole House. The mace is placed on the table when the House is sitting and represents the Queen’s authority for the House to sit. When the House is in committee, it technically isn’t sitting as the House of Commons, so the mace is lowered to signify this

    The simple truth is that he was outmanoeuvred and outnumbered by the government, SNP and Lib Dems. The Bill was going to pass whether Corbyn abstained or actively voted against it - He was left with a choice of going into an election having not voted for one, which would have been great election material for the Conservatives, or jumping before they were pushed and backing the election to save face.

      The reason brexit is so controversial is because of how shitty the referendum was held, it simply exclaimed whether brexit should happen or not and how to go about it. Some argue that means a second referendum should be held which actually gives clarification on how to go about it (for example the options could be no brexit, government deal, no deal) and if it happened like that chances are no one would fuss because it would actually be a reasonably phrased referendum with clarity.
