    This was a terrific job! Thoroughly enjoyed watching the entire video. I know it was a great feeling when the car started up and everything was good to go. Very resourceful and impressed with your persistence. Thanks for sharing the experience. Just started watching your new video on the Smart Top Controller. Looks like a great upgrade for my 2015 911S cab.

    Excellent job Bro. Very thorough, and methodical. Few mechanics will spend this kind of time and attention to detail for a car they don’t own.
    There is no substitute for doing it yourself, learning about your car, and knowing it was done carefully. I always like to lay a towel over “drop zones” when I am removing screws or working with small tools, etc. Sometimes searching for a screw takes more time than the job itself, as they always find the smallest, hardest to find places, to land, lol.

    Did the plenum on my 996 C4S a few yrs back. Messed up the gasket seal at the back and on restart had a huge vacuum leak . My indi shop saved me and had a bit of a laugh at my panic. Just ordered the plenum, intake and centre muffler delete for my recent 997.2 C4S. You’ve given me the courage to go back in there. Thnx for sharing your experience. Ton of work doing those videos.

    I know how difficult this is , I fitted the IPD on my 997.2 , which has a bit better access. The engine drop is still the way to go, I hadn't tried that and messed around for two days. I succeeded by using a teflon lubricant spray to make the rubber boots slippery , and that also helped a lot as they slide on easily. Great that you have recorded and shared this video. I think overall it is a good mod, smoother delivery through the power range. It must be those golf ball dimples ! .... Well Done, this is really good inspiration for Car enthusiasts ... Worth the extra grey hairs .......If at first you don't succeed TRY TRY again..

    I really liked this video. Rubber seals and clamps were often referred to as a, "thing" or things. It didn't matter. Each item and problem that you went through to replace the plenum. The lowering of the motor may be the main thing. Motor mount nut torque is a great idea. That aluminum does increase sound over plastic. Fab Speed custom tune. Seems like the Fab Speed tool provides a good general increase and going through data logging etc. might only get another couple of horses over the tunes that they've already figured out and are available with the tune. I have standard air filters; Fab speed exhaust bought and installed when I bought the car in 2012. That leaves the plenum install and the tune. The tune can go back to stock for DMV. But I wonder if I can pass smog with the new plenum, not so much because it won't be clean enough, but because the california smog station will detect and new plenum without a CARB number. They want a California Air Resources Number for anything in the intake or exhaust system at cats and back to the engine. Overall, this was one of the best, "how-to," videos I've ever seen. Despite my advanced age of 74, It makes me believe I could possibly do this. Another thing to do in advance is go to the dealer and see if the service bulletin applies to my 2012 991 on that oil/air separator. I wonder if it was all down, if i could then pay them a small fee for putting in the plenum, considering how much has to be removed to get to the oil/air separator? At any rate, you didn't always give the size of the torx sockets, nor the clearance amount you had to remove to create the proper tool for getting into that tight space. Then it looks like you got a piece of 1 X 4, the width of the jack pad and the length of the underneath of the oil pan? I should get one of those in advance. I didn't see the use of any jack stands, but I may have missed that as you did the job. None the less, let me give you a thumbs up. By watching this again, I can complete the notes I took on your installation of the plenum. I also liked the way you maintained as many vacuum hoses as possible, in place, so as not to mix them up. I'm guessing that different color tapes, blue, green, red, black and perhaps some digital photos of your steps might have helped there. Still, you are the owner of your car and you were able to show how it is done. I for one, really appreciate all the effort you went to, to video this. AF

      Alex Ford thanks so much!! This was the most intimidating projects I have done on this car. Taking the stereo apart to install the reverse camera electronic boards was number two. Unfortunately I don’t have the vocabulary for these videos. I just don’t know what the stuff is called and in most cases when I do know what it’s called I don’t remember in the heat of the moment on video. I also do not possess the ability to look at a nut or bolt and know the size. I have to go back-and-forth with the tool and by the time I have found the one that fits I don’t even think about the size. Anyway these are fun projects for me and I enjoy documenting them through CZcams. I really appreciate you watching and your comments are motivating. The combination of Plenum filters tune and headers/cats with the factory PSE has produced power and responsiveness that I am thrilled with. I have no desire to do anything else to this motor. As far as California emissions, maybe call Fabspeed. It would seem they have sold to California owners and would have some information on the likeliness of passing. I’m sure it’s very frustrating dealing with all the rules!! Thank you again and good luck with your car!

I think he's going to have to spring for a steak dinner though. So Snap On has some tools made to help in removal of hoses that would work on those plenum seals. Allan Kozich thank you. There were a few oh crap moments for sure. I did fabspeed headers with free flow cats, the car has stock sport exhaust with valves. K&N filters, however I’d do BMC when I replace them. Less oil- better filtration I’ve read. Also did the Cobb 93 octane tune but then bought the fabspeed tune after I did the headers cats and plenum. Fabspeed will have you send them data logs after the mods and write a tune just for you. It made a huge difference. I was really surprised. Also the sound is incredible with the stock sport exhaust and the free flow cats and five. Also also the sound is incredible with the mods. There’s nothing else to do to this motor. Very satisfying. I did a video on the headers and the tune. please check it out.

      I watched all your install videos and what you have done is exactly what I will do. I'm going with the Girodisc rotor upgrade first, suspension 2nd and finally exhaust/intake. I had catless headers on a 2005 M3 and it made a huge difference so I'm considering the catless race headers. I track my GTS so the suspension needs to be addressed as the front spring rates are too soft.

    • @bobbygfl
      @bobbygfl  Před 5 lety

      John Kingery how would they know? I believe even with the fabspeed cats the emissions is still low enough. Anyway, more air in more power, more out more power, so either way you’ll gain. Also, consider the tune. You could have the performance tube for every day and put the low emissions sucky power tune in for test day...

    I have so many questions. Is the aftermarket plenum more for sound, or low-end torque, or just more power in general? All of the above? Haha!! You mentioned low end-torque at the beginning of the video. Do you mean between 1000-2000 rpm? 2000-3000? Thanks!

    • @bobbygfl
      @bobbygfl  Před 4 lety +2

      Snap Happy Photography Every RPM range has been impacted. From a standstill it is noticeably more powerful. At about 30 miles an hour if you punch it it really takes off. At about 70 miles an hour if you downshift and floor it it’s ridiculous. Remember though my results are the combination of headers Plenum and tune.

    Hi! Great video! I was looking for a DIY on Workshop Manual WM-100109 which is where instructions are. You method kind of differs. Would you be nice and tell me from this experience if you just supported the engine with the jack and completely removed the 2 mounting bolts? I mean, you didnt have to lower the jack again for extra clearance right?

    • @bobbygfl
      @bobbygfl  Před 3 lety +1

      On the advice of a Porsche mechanic that I mentioned during the video I did completely remove the bolts while the jack was supporting the engine. I then used the Jack to slowly lowered the motor until part of the transmission rests on a cross bracket not allowing the engine to drop any further. It’s very obvious and there are no hoses or electrical wires that you could damage in the way. I then lifted the engine maybe a quarter inch to take the pressure off the cross bracket (I really think this just made me feel better pretty sure a mechanic would just let it rest there) and then tightened up the jack in that position. Hope that helps.

    • @bobbygfl
      @bobbygfl  Před 3 lety +1

      Incidentally you may be interested in returning the motor to its original position. Because the car is sitting on the race ramps it is actually sitting on its suspension. I jacked the motor back up until it took about 2 inches of pressure off of the suspension. Again this is very obvious you can see the motor mounts seated against the frame. I then tightened the bolts to the appropriate spec. I can’t remember this torque but I think I mentioned it during the video. Anyway after I drove the car for about 30 miles I rechecked the torque. I’ve had zero issues since

    I probably fast forwarded when you explained. The OEM plenum has no internal flap? Is that right? If yes, what's moving the flap on the aftermarket plenum?

    • @bobbygfl
      @bobbygfl  Před 4 lety

      Snap Happy Photography they both have a flap. It’s controlled by a servo in the back of the Plenum. Watch the Plenum install video you’ll see the mechanical connection. I believe the flap serves for low RPM vacuum. At higher rpm. it’s wide open either way. I’m not a mechanic so I may not be entirely accurate with that. Another advantage is the aluminum Plenum disperses heat faster and helps keep the air cooler going into the motor. On a cooler day it’s very noticeable. The car is definitely more responsive now on cooler days but either way it made a big difference overall.

    • @bobbygfl
      @bobbygfl  Před 5 lety +6

      Chauncey Leagones hi. Yes. Fortunately I did each mod one at a time over several months, so I had time between to drive and determine gain. Ultimately the tune/plenum/sport cat headers package adds up to the most change. The plenum alone added low end torque and increased throttle response mainly. The rpms are snappy. The car wants to jump when taping the pedal. If it makes sense, the car has more throttle attitude. Also I believe you can hear the intake air through the aluminum better than through the plastic. It adds to the mechanical sound of the engine. Hope that helps! Thanks for the view.

  • @iand8548
    @iand8548 Před 5 lety +1

    I think you had a great deal of stamina and perseverance to see it through. As a 991 S owner, I think about these mods, but then I think about the warranty if something goes wrong. My car is good until Sept '19. I think this is an insane amount of work to install a device that gives minimal improvement in performance (albeit the sound), but if you put all the mods together with a ECU tune, then what's the overall gain from stock hp and torque?

    • @bobbygfl
      @bobbygfl  Před 5 lety +2

      Ian D 400 stock. Dyno was 498 high 490 low. But this car has most of the x51 upgrade. The cams are the only mod I was unable to video. And the tuned intake manifold is the only x51 mod I did not complete. It’s a significant feeling change between 3k and 6k rpm in lower gears. The torque in the higher range after about 100mph in 4-5-6 gears from 6k to 7500/8k is crazy. I think it’s more powerful than a gt3 at least in the way it pulls. Just me. I wanted the project mainly, but couldn’t find a gt3 touring in my budget. Plus even the touring doesn’t have back seats which I wanted. I’m also not crazy about the gt3 front. Too much info, I know. Lol. Anyway thanks for the comment. I was able to this much power on a reasonable spend. Way under gt3 prices. Also I don’t like alcantara. Lol. Also I waited for my warranty to expire before I began the mods. The two years of warranty I had, I used that time to plan what I would do.

      Tom Curry thanks! I will not do a cold air intake. I’ve done enough research to convince me that they are useless. The car’s design does not force enough cool air through the engine compartment and the reverse actually occurs where are you were sucking in hotter air then with the stock intake.

      Tom Curry thanks for the view and the dialogue! For me the combination of plenum, headers, specifically the free flow cats, and the tune written specifically for the car (fabspeed wrote it twice to tweak out some extra torque) was an awesome change in performance. Not only sound, which is amazing. The car is punchy and very responsive. Low gear taps throw your head back. Entrance ramp acceleration is thrilling and passing at about 60 is unreal. The car just launches. I’d do the same mods all over. There’s nothing more to do the engine as far as I’m concerned and that’s really quite satisfying.

    How is IPD Plenum with Fabspeed tune? I have 2016 911 Carrera and so far I have installed BMC filters, Fabspeed X-Pipe to remove center muffler and I removed side mufflers as well. Car is loud AF even in regular mode. I have IPD Plenum and Fabspeed tune to go next, but wondering if I should install Plenum or not. Thoughts?

    • @bobbygfl
      @bobbygfl  Před 2 lety

      It’s hard to say what difference just the plenum makes. Sounds like you did what I did, increase the airflow in and decrease the resistance out. I can say the combo of the plenum, tune, headers and cats made a significant difference. Also, you know how you get more power when it’s cold out. I feel like the aluminum plenum causes this because the aluminum disburses heat better than plastic. Anyway, you can’t go wrong doing it. Hope that helps.

Some owners have never had a failure. You’ll know because you’ll get a failure warning on something they control. First check should be the solenoid. By 2015 they got them right I believe.

    • @bobbygfl

      Panzer966 yes. It’s slightly deeper. There is no mistaking it is a 911. I’d say when you first start up your car in sport mode and it idles slightly high and sound so good for that first couple minutes- it sounds like that all the time. A nice rumble. I really need to set up a better mic and record it. And the crackling when your exhaust is in sport mode is crazy cool. When your exhaust is open and you are hard on the pedal it sounds like one of the 911 race cars. But that’s only under full throttle. My favorite thing about this one is when the exhaust is closed it sounds quite. Like stock w no pse. Best of both worlds in my book.

      I use K&N but if I ever replaced them I’d go with BMC. There’s a couple reasons. All just my opinion, I have no proof which is better. 1. The rubber used around the filter element appears to be softer and of a better quality seemingly would get a better seal. 2. The filter element material appears to be more fibrous. It seems like it would hold back dirt better. 3. BMC seems to be a smaller company and I just believe quality control would be more important to them. Anyway hope that helps

      @@3manresa generally my opinion of these is they don’t actually do anything. This one does seem like a clever design however you’re still pulling the air in from exactly the same spot. Clearly the filtration surface area is increased. I really don’t know if that means more air or just more filtering longevity. I would almost guarantee that it would sound better. Seems you would be able to hear the intake suction and mechanical sounds from the intake side of the engine. As far as performance I’m sure it’s just like anything else, maybe you’ll get a horsepower or two but combined with doing several modifications you net out a noticeable game. Thanks for sending the link I’ve never seen this product. As far as getting cooler air into the engine I don’t see how that would even be possible considering the air is coming from exactly the same place.

    Now that I have watched it all, what a job for a debatable gain. Really, if you are talking "mods" and "tunes", the only way to know for sure if you made any HP gains is by using a dyno before and after each mod or tune. Otherwise, you are just guessing.
    BTW don't tell me someone on Rennlist talked you into this. The 991 crowd there really isn't that informed. Most of them are just drivers and like to talk a lot.

    • @bobbygfl

      A Christian thanks for watching! Car dyno’s at 498! I’m thrilled with the power from the stock listed 430. That said, I wasn’t after HP. I was after attitude. Stay with me here. I love the snappy air cooled cars. Each one feels a bit different. Even the same car in different weather seems like a completely different car. I loved that. Got in a 991 and it felt underwhelming. No attitude. Nothing unpredictable. Got in a gt3. Loved the punchyness, hated the rattling. So, I did a bunch of research and decided a 991 3.8 and the mods I did. Exhaust, cams, plenum, tune. What I’ve ended up with is a punchy car full of personality. I’m really thrilled. Doing most of it myself was a lot of fun to! Thanks again for the comment.

      I think I might post a video on this because this is the number one question I get. The performance increase is the combination of the headers the Plenum and the tune. I noticed the biggest difference from the tune. The feel of the car has completely changed. It is much more powerful in the mid range and feels very similar to a GT3. The power increase is between I’d say 2500 and 4000 RPMs. As far as and unexpected improvement the aluminum Plenum helps improve the sound of the engine in my opinion. You can hear the top end intake sounds more clearly it makes the car sound more mechanical.
