Porsche 911 996 intake mod | IPD plenum and DIY

- I recently purchased the 996 911. Prior to sending the car to the mechanic I wanted to service some basic service items like filters, gas struts. I also wanted to upgrade the factory intake plenum by changing it to an IPD intake plenum specified for the non-cable throttle 3.4 M96 engine. Little did I know that there was a surprise lurking about, this increased the time needed for installation by two.

I changed the oil filler pipe on my 996 and dropped a bolt. I would say to everyone an extendable magnet is essential for any work on a 996 just get one before you start any job you will thank me later.
Hehe, you are absolutely right. I had one, but lost it and I keep forgetting to get one! Why did you need to change the oil filled tube? Out of curiosity
It snapped where it flex’s apparently quite common on 996. It’s a horrible job to do but stops oil leaking when you refill and keeps oil pressure correct
@@davidB997 oh I didn’t know
Great video
Boy do I feel for you. I broke 3 bolts doing engine mounts, had to have my mechanic drill them out after telling him I'd do the job myself.
Then I hope this doesn’t ever repeat it self for either of us. Have a nice day! 🙂 p.s. since then I have had to repair bolt holes 3 times…
You poor bastard. I can’t tell you the number of times this kind of shit has happened to me. It’s why I never ever do my own work on engines anymore!
😂
How did it end up working out?
A good lesson to wait until you are done before you have a few beers. From what I've seen on other video's I think you have to have a professional do some tuning on your ECU in order to get the full power out of the IPD, otherwise it will sound cool, but it won't produce any more power. Good luck!
Thank you. Just wrote an e-mail to them. From my understanding it should not be necessary here. Here is a video from PCA czcams.com/video/ygzPfE5CcOs/video.html. Happy new year!
I have just received the response from IPD wow such quick customer service! "There is absolutely no reason for any ECU tuning to optimize the IPD
Plenums, especially with a 996 Carrera.
The factory ECU will make all the required "Adaptative" changes necessary to
optimize the Plenum.'
Thanks for all the support and Happy New Year,"
I want to do this to my 986 S, but... still paying off the exhaust
Good luck then! :-) Honestly though, personally I am not sure it's 100% worth it, I will take the car to the dyno, we will then see ;-)
@@CarPlebs please let us know in a future video!
@@hawkinsjd11 Will do! ✌️
Oh no! never start drinking b4 you are done!
Yep, fully agree! Never again ;-(
Is ipd worth of money? Any gain in middle range revs or something....?
Hey hey 👋! Torque across the midrange and approx 10-15 hp depending on sources. It’s necessary to check per specific 996/997 engine as with some there are no benefits except for sound. Also depends on the price you get it for, I found one for 30% off new...
No it’s not , I did back to back dyno , my only gain came from bigger injectors , and new ecu and changing to map sensor, ipd alone not going to do anything.
@@996turbo Which injectors? Also did you get a custom tune or just let the ecu try to adapt to the new components?
I fitted one to a 996 C2 and it does nothing, dyno proved that, it could improve a turbo model but normal aspirated it just looks good and that's it, Total waste of money. I paid about 1000 GPB I will sell you mine
Great video
Thanks! What would you like to see next ?
