Considering that it's based on a board game of all things, I think the movie was pretty enjoyable.
The movie might've been a bit dull in some places but I'll be damned if I didn't like the action

When it came out one of my buddies that is none military was like, "Your prob going to have a lot of issues with it." Cause I served in the Navy. I actually didn't cause I knew it was based on a board game and while a lot of it was so silly and stupid. Like the CWIS of all ships would be putting an iron current up against all those charge missles it fired not just one ship. The other thing I thought was totally silly was where the hell they get the powder for the battle ship guns? LOL I did think it was kick arse when the old dude said that but again I went in with the whole mind set this is a board game movie, not a real experience style movie.
"It's your ship sir" "Give me an ordef sir" *Proceed to dispute and question every order he gives*
Let's be honest, every order he gave except the last one was compromised based on his emotions. He was essentially going on a suicide run in a single-minded mission of revenge. The problem with that, of course, is that he's not alone and, as leader, he's responsible for everyone on his ship and other sailors on the water, for the that matter. Hence why his two friends disputed him the whole way: he wasn't in the right state of mind, therefore his 'orders' were compromised.

the new captain was stunned and crew saw that. they are trying wake him up. then they saw he is on full rage mode, they tried to wake him up again. they can't do anything without captain's order so they are trying to make him give "go to nagata" order. also these ships aren't designed to fight on close proximity. as you can see they have only 1 gun and its tiny. these vessels carry missiles to engage long distances. wtf is "ram this thing with full speed!" order.
There's a difference between being THE Captain and BEING a Captain.

the same as bismarck does. its AA can deal against the most modern air vehicle of enemies and still can't shot a single brit's old swordfish
i guess the gravity is different from their homeworld, remember they had no plan as shown when some ships crashed landed in land, and think of it like this, you can have a mini gun but if everyone in the world had a pistol with one bullet eventually one's gonna kill you so that must be why they tried to avoid conflict

Actually, They are suspected to be Miner or scientist. Unlike other aliens, they are non agressive unless you provoked them first or they felt danger. You can see in movie. They would spare you or anything which do not pose danger to them.
I love how when they turned to go aid the sinking ship, they all took a deep breath like it was some big relief that the alien ship didn't attack them. Like you are ever going to know that it won't fire on you in any second.

The Navy honks and they honked back but it was way too loud and when the navy fired warning shots they fired back
They only attacked in self defense until they commenced their attacks on highway bridges and military installation

Gonna be honest, this movie is one of the best alien attack movies out there. Not the best but it's close and it has a special place in my heart nostalgia factor.

yep. I love the movie. It isn't trying to be anything extra. Just an alien attack movie, done with high quality cinematography. Simple and generic, some times that is a good thing.

The wasted use of Liam Neeson and an entire carrier strike force with multiple Aegis Cruisers. Instead we got lets throw a big ship that would not be nearly that functional at it. It would have been better if it had shown the carrier force having to out maneuver them using hit and run tactics or attack submarines.

@@Klanosek Yes in 1984 it was, it was also modified to fire Tomahawk Cruise missiles and Harpoon Anti-Ship missiles (far more effective than cannons). But the Missouri is a museum ship now not actively in a combat role. So her weapon stores are minimal(if any) and she has likely enough fuel to turn her shafts for a short time.
No part of this movie was gold. This and hunter killer are travesties against navys all over the world...A destroyer with an effective range of hundreds of miles getting blown up by an alien puddle jumper with high explosive molotov cocktails my ass...

I thought if there was a sequel, that the aliens were actually some alien force that were going to warn us that a common even more evil alien race was heading for the Earth. Sorta like we beat the more evil force to the Earth and we need a base to fight them.

Japanese ship opened fire to the aliens, they fired back. Their "scans" actually show you that they are aware of their rocket supply and where to aim to destroy them.

The movie might've felt like the Navy's equivalent of Transformers but it captures the feel quite well and even outpaces the trilogy in nearly every department

There's actually a theory about this movie where the aliens ships are just mining ships. Look at their arsenal. They are not the kind of weapons you would fit a spaceship that fight in the space. More like a ship that digs with explosive.

I agree with you, the pegs can use the seismic explosions to excavate cheaply with the wheel things being like bucket wheel excavators digging tunnels, and the alien with the armor had a pick axe like thing on his right arm

Thats how explosions work in ships corridors The blast explodes forcing things creating a vacuum which sucks the air back in but the force of continued explosion just pushes right back.

They call him a Lieutenant Commander, yet he has the Lieutenant insignias.
If he’s holding a billet of a higher rank it’s acceptable. Like when a Lt.Cmdr is commanding a ship, he or she is called a Captain. Last example if. Staff Sergeant is holding the billet of Company Gunnery Sergeant, he or she would be called Company Guns short for company gunnery Sergeant

This movie and Battle LA are probably the best two military alien movies I've ever watched.

Back in the 90's I was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. We did a lot of drills with the JDMF that pretty much they where just a part of our carrier group at times when close to home waters.

The destruction scenes in this movie slaps honestly
The movie coincidentally shows how modern Destroyers are heavily reliant on missiles rather than cannons.
Missiles are great in most categories so I doubt the DDs with more than two or three guns will ever make a comeback unless a warfare advances to the point DDGs become obsolete somehow.
I still don't get how their Mark45s missed so much. These are rated for anti missile duty! How?!

This was one of the first PG-13 movies I ever saw when I was (7? 8? 9?) and it's still got a special place in my heart.
1:10 when your salvo gets you 8 citadel hits from 10 Km away in wows
It's amazing how quick it was for the alien ship to target these ships, and for the shots to land.
Then in that final battle, the alien ship suddenly decides to much longer to target and shots take 5 times longer to drop. Main character powers I guess.

People were too harsh on this movie. It was a unique twist having the Navy fight the aliens, plus unlike Independence Day, the idea that humanity could continue on after this invasion was at least believable, and no unnecessary sequel

It was established in the scene prior that fire control couldn't lock-on missiles because those alien ships absorbed radar signals (and possibly gave no heat nor magnetic signature either I assume). Instead they fired guns manually targeting upon line of sight, which weren't as effective nor as accurate as their guided missiles.
@@djargus Except that later in the film they targeted the missiles manually and hit targets they couldn't even see. Also, I have a hard time believing the crew of a US Navy ship, even one this undisciplined, couldn't hit a target that big from that close.

How in the holy hell of naval gunnery did that DDG fail every single shot at point blank range.
Eyeballing a target is difficult when there is no crew in the turret and the cameras are down.
@@lurkingcarrier8736 The cameras werent down lol they somehow jammed the ENTIRE RF spectrum which is borderline impossible. but not all electronics on board their is still a camera with tics on a reticle that you can just range your rounds with.

The aliens are clearly the good guys in this movie. They only fire when fired upon, and exercise amazing restraint in throughout the entire movie. The humans always fire first, from first contact right up to the end.

Not really. It would take a small amount of time for the CIWS to confirm it's destroyed a target and move to the next one. It's very plausible that a close range volley like that would get hits past the CIWS when it's only like 5 to 6 seconds from launch to impact.

How about "The Final Countdown"? Kirk Douglas commands the Nimitz and they are transported back in time to 12/6/1941.
I just realized, that movie was released in 1980, so it has been a longer time from the release of that movie to now than there was between the attack on Pearl Harbor and the release of that movie.
Even though they weren’t being targeted, The older brother still decided to point the guns at the alien vessel to draw them off his little brother. He knew what would happen and he did it anyways. He traded his own life, his ship and crew to save his little brother.
Then He did wrong, He can not risk the life of his entire ship just to save 1 single life even if that life is the life of his brother. It is better to loose 1 life than loose more than 350 life + the huge suffer of 350 families.

Which captain, the only one who let his emotions get the better of him was the pwo and they’re 2 ringers while captains are 4 ringers so he was highly unqualified and only in command as all other high ranking officers were dead
notice how all three ships are designated *"guided missile destroyer"* and not a single missile was fired
If you actually watched the movie, they said they couldn’t lock on to it, so the only weapon available is the 75 mm tank cannon on the ship

@@elemental7726 why sling lead from 10 miles away to decent effect when you can annihilate any target from 100 miles away with no risk to yourself save for other missiles. It's not as cool to look at or aa exhilarating to do but it's definitely more effective

Next scenes: questions every order given by the acting Captain.
This is what I call bad writing, a sailor that "doesn't know what to do", basically a scene to show the incapability of said sailor and how dependent of leadership they are, can't be questioning every order by the acting Captain literally seconds after "not knowing what to do". lmao
This had an easy fix, instead of "I don't know what to do", he could ask "what are your orders Sir?". Like this they have a neutral character that can go either way and not a wimp that does a 180º in a matter of seconds.
He’s a trained helmsman, he knows what to do. He just let fear take over, and it was still in the driver seat when he was told to lock in a collision course by someone who just had to be told he was captain. It worked for me.
The part where the first destroyer got blown up feels similar to when you land a perfect broadside salvo in WoWS with a ton of citadel hits

They can travel through space/galaxies...yet their weapons are projectile base!!

Their war machines look naval based. Their biology also looks like they live in a wet based planet. I dont know much about science but I have a feeling large plasma or laser based weapons would be useless underwater. But yea I also agree with the fact they didnt have it since they do tend to surface a lot.
The wiki says they were mining charges, repurposed as weapons. Just as one might think, these aliens were not outwardly hostile, and were fleeing their destroyed homeworld; seeking refuge, but not invading.
I'm just gonna say it, this movie slapped, it understood that it needed to be badass and fun

I haven't seen the movie in forever, so I don't remember (plus, I'm not sure how Navy Ship's Chain of Command works compared to Army), but maybe he wasn't 3rd. They specified that the CO and XO were gone, but there may have been other senior officers above him that were also killed.
If memory serves, his Zodiak style boat was launched from the first destroyer sunk, the one with his brother on it. He was picked up by another ship that suffered damage and numerous casualties as well. He would have no idea, at that moment, that the captain was dead and who was in command.

This movie is like Pacific Rim. I like it, but it's not a good film, yet it has so many cool stuff going on inside and I've seen far worse films, so they're actually good films. I hope you could follow.

at the end, when the human ship cancels the attack on the alien ship, the aliens retract their weapons, even though they could have easily destroyed that human ship. this shows the aliens aren't THAT bad.

I know this movie was kinda cheesy at the time, but its definantly grown on me a little. I do enjoy the consistency of the battle segments and the overall plot.
The CWIS is so gimped in this movie. It's capable of taking out much faster moving missiles at much great ranges. These bombs being lobbed at the ship would be a breeze for a CWIS to handle. Maybe not the second wave given how many came in, but certainly the first wave would've been easy.
Ya my brother operated (oversight) on the CWIS and he said it would have destroyed the first volley.
On manual fire control? It seems their targeting was down, yet we don't see an operator firing the CIWS manually, weird. I The targeting computer is obviously faster and yeah, a tightly grouped first volley would probably be defeated. Combine this with evasive maneuvers, they had a fighting chance, as these projectiles were unguided, slow, and fired in an arch. They should've been able to evade at range. Of course they had no weapons to put even a dent on the enemy ships.
Gun based close defence is weird. Ever see that one of a phalanx intercept test versus a slow moving drone?

Afaik, the alien ships are actually just miners and explorers. They didn't come to earth to invade, they just crash landed there and then tried to capture an antenna array on an island to call in a rescue team (this is why they don't shoot at things that aren't actively a threat to them). Most likely, these ships aren't even designed to fly in the atmosphere and are just improvising with their landing gear to jump around and use their asteroid mining charges as weapons. It's like if a group of modern miners with nothing but power drills stranded on an island with stone age tribes on it.

Captain was clearly emotionally compromised, not fit to lead. Ready to sacrifice his ship and all his crew in a futile suicide attack. It also appeared that the alien ship didn't fire unless fired upon.
Yup, they were scouts completely here to observe, once hostile act's were shown then they acted, in practice what they normally do is like here, if they see a planet they can harvest and colonize, they send scouts to learn about said planet, eventually they'd send information to the main forces if good they'd send a giant invasion fleet to do the rest of the work, and move on.
@@thelastsamurai4434 Someone else once speculated that these were mining rather than military equipment, their weapons were either defensive or was mining equipment used as weapons in self-defense. Which would mean that their actual military equipment is far more powerful.
@@quillmaurer6563 probably yeah, but from what i've understood only watching the movie, these aliens are not friendly at all, had that signal of theirs gone trough, peaceful or not we'd be in serious trouble
