- It's been four years since huge fires swept across Kangaroo Island in South Australia, blazing through the mallee woodland and threatening farmland and towns. With wildlife under siege from feral cats in the aftermath, Australian Wildlife Conservancy teamed up with local landholders and Kangaroo Island Land for Wildlife to secure a precious unburnt patch of habitat with a specially constructed feral predator-proof fence.
Today, wildlife in the Western River Refuge is thriving. The Kangaroo Island Dunnart is being recorded throughout the area and other animals like bandicoots, whipbirds and echidnas are all making use of the feral predator-free safe haven. Sustained feral animal control remains a big focus in a buffer zone outside the fence.
Pat Hodgens is a Fauna Ecologist who has been working on Kangaroo Island in the aftermath of the fires. He speaks about some of the island's unique wildlife and the great achievements of the past four years.
