Australia has the worst mammal extinction rate in the world: a new model for conservation is needed to reverse the decline in our wildlife. AWC is the largest private (non-profit) owner of land for conservation in Australia, protecting endangered wildlife across 6.5 million hectares in iconic locations such as the Kimberley, the Top End, Cape York and the central deserts.
With around 80% of our staff based in the field, AWC is implementing a new model for conservation: delivering large-scale, practical land management (such as feral animal control and fire management), informed by world-class science.
Across our sanctuaries and partnership areas, AWC protects:
- 72% of native mammal species (207 species)
- 88% of native bird species (541 species)
- 54% of native reptile species (523 species)
- 54% of native amphibian species (127 species)

Introducing Waulinbakh Wildlife Sanctuary
Introducing Waulinbakh Wildlife Sanctuary 🌿
Previously named Gorton Forest Sanctuary, this oasis sits on the traditional lands of the Worimi people and is a haven for local wildlife.
After discussions between AWC and representatives of two local Aboriginal Corporations, a Gathang language word was selected to rename the sanctuary. 'Waulinbakh' translates to Grey Gum Place, with the Gathang word for Grey Gum (Eucalyptus propinqua) being Warlingbang.

Eight years into the project, the site is now home to burgeoning populations of five of those species including Bilbies, bandicoots an...

So amazing...
Heroes! ❤
Awesome!
"Grey", not "Greg". Also, we have "WaUlinbakh" (Grey Gum Place) and "WaRlinbang" (Grey Gum), which is a bit sus. Thanks for the introduction. Looks like a fantastic place.
The word for grey gum is in fact 'Warlingbang' but we did slip up with the typo on 'Grey gum', so thanks for your keen eye!
@@AustralianWildlifeConservancy How odd that one has U and the other R. Have to admit I know less than zero about aboriginal languages. Thank you for your reply.
what is a katithanda
Would love a longer audio recording! 🤎
Noted! We'll pass on the feedback to our videographer :)
This little movie and soundscape is absolutely exquisite!……the only sadness is that it doesn’t go for longer……
Thank you! And I saw a GG 🌟 and other beautiful native wildlife 🌟
💚💚💚🫶 magnificent! Thank you. Keep em safe.
My dear friend, money has become more precious than any life form on earth it self, In my heart and mind the greatest tragedy on earth is to loose a specie, that can never be brought back again. We are the most destructive life form on the planet.
Please ring or write your federal member or representative and urge them to do far more to halt the extinction crisis in Australia. We see what their real priorities are: capitalistic extraction and destruction of nature, supporting US wars and regional aggression and neoliberal austerity. All this must change and we the people must be the pressure that change requires. Our leaders will not act to save Australia's incredibly precious and unique wildlife of their own accord. Well done AWC for being part of what's required to reverse destructive policies.
Piliga is Yowie central.
Wonderful stuff 🙂
Amazing!
Well done, AWC.
Thank you 🙏
What type of snake is this?
He's ragging that snake with as much enthusiasm as a warm blooded terrier !
They are super cool ✌️👏
Aww, just so cute!🥰
Well done, critters. My dog, Mr Bill, loved to sing along. And that's just what he did when we went to the Anzac dawn service and the bugler played Last Post. We exited quickly!

Legends ❤
Grew up listen to them they sound like home 👏✌️
How sweet!
Great work! I’d love to know if the Taronga team do any conditioning work to prepare the quolls for life in the wild or if that’s deemed necessary.
😮I'm a new subscriber because I'm truly an avid animal lover ♥️👏💔🙏🤝
beautiful snapshot of AWC's work - inspiring!
Thanks for all your hard work!
fascinating. Thank you!
Mt Gibson is a great project and all involved should be congratulated. However for the AWC to say that introduction of 8 species to one site is one of the most successful in the world shows a lack of what goes on in other countries. Australia is way behind many countries and is only just getting started, admittedly due to the hard of organisations like AWC.
Good onya guys 🐾🐿✌
🦘💚💚
Well done AWC! All the best for 2024.
Thanks so much!
Awesome work AWC team 💯👍
Thank you!!⭐
Good on you

Thank you for such a lovely comment!
Thank you so much for sharing with us and for your amazing work AWC and all staff involved ❤ The footage of the Perenti in the flower beds is absolutely stunning, it would be amazing if Sir David Attenborough could do a documentary using your footage filmed on your conservation sites 😊 🎥 🍿 🦎 🌸
Thank you for caring about our work! Sir David is lovely, that would be the dream! 💚
