Originally it absolutely was going to be a tunnel, massive and unstoppable lined with engravings and gold. However, one smart dwarf suggested if they made it above ground, all other races would be forced to use it, and in turn pay honour to the dwarves.
"Imagine! 200 years in the future, the Northern Bridge standing strong and undaunted. An elven carriage, utterly helpless in the face of the river, bowing to our honour as they pay respects to our Mighty Hold, allowing them to pass. Multiply that for every carriage, by every settlement this side of the river and across! Our Name would be passed down in history forever as the great unifier of the two banks!"

Cutebolds are a long standing things in Dwarf Fortress. There was a whole mod about building Kobold Fortresses (if you can even call a hobble in the ground a "fort"). People have an old idea of them being cute because the original drawing memes that spread were very similar to the Mimigas in Cave Story, which are cute bunny people.

Design-wise I wish she had two long arms, but just the one has the right amount of weird that ancient gods should have.
I can imagine a story cropping up that she kept wearing more and more bangles to show off her wealth, and her arm kept growing to accommodate them. Eventually the arm kept growing out of control, even as she stopped adding bangles, showing that, while wealth can be a blessing, it can also be a curse. Don't dig too deep, dwarves, even if you think riches await in the depths.

So I'm only 6 minutes into the episode. But watching the dwarves struggling to cross the long bridge through heat and freeze got me thinking about needing to build part of the fortress on the bridge itself. A bustling market place like the main strip of a bazaar. To cross you must not simply take the bridge, but must become a guest of the fortress. You will be safe. You will be warm and fed. You can even make trade with the best in the land. But know this...rooms do not come cheap. And the bridge is the only and the last bed you might see before the frigid north before you.

I really like the art style you do for this series. It's super neat too how it changes from world to world. Some worlds have green fleshy goblins, some worlds have fuzzy purple goblins, they're all super interesting and cool in their own way! I especially like how the elves are depicted this time around. I remember in the old Monster Killer series they were silly, not to serious, like a distant cousin of the dwarves, and when they come begging you to stop cutting down trees it's because they're peace-loving hippies who anthropomorphize the forest just a little too much. This time around they look serious, imposing, and alien. When they come to demand you stop harming the trees, they really could care less about how each individual twig feels, they are planning something far more sinister.

I really love how much detail you give to the cultures in your series! Each dwarven civilization has its own fashion, artistic style, sense of decoration, etc, and this even applies to migrants looking slightly different than long-term residents. The elves you draw are always different from series to series, and each is much more interesting than the generic stereotypes they could be. It really turns what could easily be a generic western fantasy tolkien pastiche into a living, breathing world.

Have to say i LIKE how you show Goblins in this Game :)
They look really cool and evil, fitting well into the world :)
Also.... giant Mandrill ? Your former Monkey loving Dwarfs a few games back would have KILLED for it ;)
I like Cutebolds BUT ... am sure they not all have to be Cutebolds ^^
Kobold are as you imagin them ^^

I once cut down every tree on my embark to try and annoy the elves... they just kinda pointed at the stumps, said "BAD DWARVES!" and left.

im absolutely ADORING the looks into your dwarves culture youre giving - im honestly amazed you still manage to give every series/world a unique feel in that regard given how long its been. the different designs for goblins and kobolds are really fun too, the variations you do between worlds like that always add a lot to tone, like how elves run a spectrum between tall nature humans and sinister, bizarre fey type guys peering out of layers of wooden trinkets. BTW i have a guess re: the giant toads: i havent checked on the wiki but do they maybe lay eggs? it might be worth throwing a nest box in to try

I like that you decided to make the Kobold a bit more doglike. Something that got abandoned back between 2nd and 3rd edition D&D in favour of making them more draconic.

I'm always excited to see what new takes you have on either physical characteristics or just cultural vibes like apparel and jewelry. Love the canid goblins.

The goblins are like polar bears - their hairs are hollow and whitish/colorless by nature. Their characteristic purple or green colorations are caused by different types of symbiotic algae which grow within the hairs.

The OG kobold is a creature from traditional irish/english folklore. They were depicted as being about a foot and a half tall, and wearing mining gear and mining tools. And, most obvious distinguishing feature... they had the faces of dogs or wolves and fur and shiny yellow eyes. Their main glamour magic was the ability to turn invisible at will (save for their eyes) by holding their breath.
They were natural denizens of the underground and did not much care for human intrusion... often turning hostile against miners. But they didn't fight directly, being much smaller and weaker than humans, instead they sabotaged the supports of the mines and undermined tunnels, causing cave-ins. It was said that often, before the collapse, you could hear their little hammers and chisels working to cripple the support timbers for a day or two when nobody was in the mine.... this is why one of their nicknames is 'Tommyknockers'. Hearing the tapping of hammers when the mine was empty was usually a signal to inspect the timbers carefully and possibly get more shoring up.
Sometimes they might take a shine to the miners instead, in which case the miner might hear the tapping of hammers on stone somewhere nearby where they know nobody is, and if they followed it until it stopped they will have been led to a hidden rich vein they weren't aware of, courtesy of the mine's kobolds. Miners thus put up with kobolds and often left gifts for them in the hopes of procuring friendship instead of enmity. This was of middling effectiveness, as kobolds are capricious and both easily appeased AND easily slighted.
