- In this video, we will be exploring more of Hobnail Canyon than most people tend to do. Hobnail canyon joins into Upper Bowens South Canyon, and a lot of people who do that canyon, tend to walk a ways up Hobnail and consider it "done". We hope to show you that Hobnail Canyon is worthy of a dedicated trip, not just being a side trip...
I mean, there are better looking canyons, but, we rather enjoyed our adventure from the upper reaches of Range Creek down to the confluence with Bowens Creek South.
Hobnail canyon is pretty easy to get into, we walked along Range fire trail for a short distance until you see the parked car on the left, and it is here we headed down the steep hill towards Range Creek. We tended left and met a usually dry feeder creek, that was running, making it VERY slippery, a hand-over hand rope assisted with a descent down that creek, to the final short drop into Range Creek.
From there, it is pretty straight forward. Technically, this is a Non-Abseil canyon, and we did it that way, but, the 2nd big blockage, has an abseil anchor on the true right, but, as always, we found a way past without needing to abseil, that was pretty adventurous and fun.
The first blockage we came to, we had to dig past the first part on the right and squeeze through, then went left and dug about 5 feet of debris out to get through on the left near the roof of the boulder. Slowed us down, but just added to the adventure really.
There are a few swims in the upper sections of Hobnail Canyon and some gorgeous, green canyon sections. Of course, there are sections of scrubby creek as well, nothing too hard.
Pretty soon, after entering the lower section, you will meet the confluence with Upper Bowens Creek South, then, it is a few hundred metres downstream to the traditional exit on the right.
The exit has some fixed hand line scrambles, a tunnel climb, then two options for the final ascent, a challenging fixed hand line ascent which we show, or, further around, a steep scramble. From there, it is a gradual uphill back to Range Hill fire trail and back to Bells Line and your car.

You are an amazing adventurer 😊😊😊😊😊😊
Thank you, too kind. Getting out and exploring and experiencing such beautiful locations sure makes life more fun!
That looks so lush and pretty 😍
This is a really pretty canyon, that I think it would be rare to meet anyone else in, particularly the upper sections, which we rather enjoyed.
so gorgeous!
Yes, very much so, and of course there is so much more to it than what we show.
Great vid guys
Thanks so much, it is a very underrated canyon that most seem to walk up into the lower section from South Bowens Upper.
Adding this one to my list
Glad you are, it is a reasonably easy canyon, pretty and worthy of a trip. Just like the full Corkscrew Canyon, another awesome day out.
Awesome vid. I'd love to do it but it looks tricky. Is it hard to navigate there or can you just follow the creek
You need to be confident in your navigation, then it is follow the creek. Perhaps get more easy canyon experience first.
@@shoesonmyfeet6056 fractured my foot hiking 😢 so couldn't do our last planned canyon so will have to wait til next season. I'll be ready then. What's the easiest abseil canyon you recommend
Hope you heal soon, easy is subjective. Easy getting in and out? Easy abseil start? Short abseil? Straight forward abseil and not underhung? So many things could be considered easy by some, but hard by others.
Empress is easy in and easy out, we consider it an easy abseil, though it has a small underhang right at the top that some will consider challenging.
Practise abseiling away from canyons in varying terrains such as Yellow Rock to build up your experience before putting cold and flowing water into the mix.
@@shoesonmyfeet6056 missed this message. Easiest non abseil canyon. Actually scratch the easy part. Doesn't matter if it's hard or easy. Just your fave walk in canyon, swims are fine, no abseils or something you can just use climbing tape for.
Clatterteeth, or extended Joe's.
