Tiger Snake Canyon - Newnes Plateau - Blue Mountains Canyoning - 4K
Tiger Snake Canyon is located out on the Newnes Plateau, in the heart of canyon country. Parking is at the locked gate on the old coach Rd, not too far from the Glow Worm Tunnel, from there, it is a very easy walk in of around 3.7kms, taking around an hour or so across undulating terrain.
Being such a stunning and easy to get to canyon, this makes it a popular commercial winter canyon.
You eventually meet a fork in the trail, to the right is the exit track, left is the continuation down to the start and the first very squeezy abseil.
It is a very popular winter canyon, we did this canyon twice in winter to film both options in the lower section, as there are two ways through. There was far less water on the 2nd trip, with pools in the canyon up to around knee height.
We took a 40mtr and a 70mtr rope to do the abseils.
The upper section is very short, a squeezy first abseil drops you in, and you can then continue about a few mtrs and then do another small drop into a pool with a sandy beach. From that beach, keep your rope out, you are going to use it again just around the corner at the infamous bundle of sticks abseil anchor. Don't like the look of the sticks, well, there is a new anchor on the wall on true left just back a bit, we used that both times.
A pool awaits at the bottom of this short abseil, then a very tight squeeze brings you back out into the open to the root climb, we abseiled that both times, then, the final 30mtr abseil of the upper section signals the end of that short section of canyon.
A short wander down the creek brings you to a cairn on the edge of the creek, you have two choices, follow the creek and do the entire length of the lower section, a stunning, narrow and dark section of canyon, with another bigger abseil and a scramble down under a beautiful arch.
Or, you can cross the creek and scramble up the other side and follow the track along for a few minutes to an anchor above the canyon. This abseil is just simply stunning! Narrow, dark, twisting, and somewhere between 20-25mtrs. You land, just downstream of the arch mentioned previously.
From this point, you can walk and squeeze your way downstream, no more abseils, and some very tight and dark sections to enjoy. Shortly after, you round a corner and the dark slot opens out into a green boulder scramble, keeping right, you will find the exit gully. There are some fallen trees that you can push under and an easier gully is on the other side, or, you can take the steeper gully, just before the trees.
Once at the top, a good track heads away and left, look for a track that veers right, it is a little vague here, but, easy enough to find, then it is an easy undulating walk to the bottom of a group of pagodas which need to be climbed, easy to do, then, walk back to the car. For us, the exit was just under 4.4kms.

Mermaids Cave is located not too far out of Blackheath on the road that heads down into the Megalong Valley. On a very sharp right hand bend, the walk starts on the left with a sign and a small dirt parking spot opposite on the right. This is a reasonably well-known walk at Faulconbridge, known for the relics of the old timber mill and for the old incline railway that descended into the valley to haul the timber out to waiting trucks. @shoesonmyfeet6056 Před 27 dny

      Thanks for letting us know and being part of the crew who built the "new" track. When you built it, did you improve the original private tracks? Was there much left of the old wall that created the swimming pool at the base of Mabel Falls? Did your team install the handrail and BBQ above Edith Falls? Was the bridge that washed away between Mabel and Edith Falls? So many questions lol....

    • @MGoose66
      @MGoose66 Před 6 dny

      @@shoesonmyfeet6056 The tracks were not so much ‘private’… all crown land. The ones at the lower two falls (with the handrails) pre-dated the work we did by many years. They were maintained by BMCC maybe? although sporadically and minimally. In the 1990 era, BMNP was expanded to include many BMCC areas, the most notable being the cliff lines and escarpments of the Jamison Valley, however the funding for our job came directly from the MWSDB who hand responsibility for this land at the time. (T of V walk is in the Woodford dam catchment.) It’s hard to visualise now, but the upper track that we built (note: hardwood steps) was placed over a fire trail which we rehabilitated - you could drive to within a few meters of the upper (Mabel) falls along what is now the walking track alignment.

    • @MGoose66
      @MGoose66 Před 6 dny

      @@shoesonmyfeet6056 The bridge of which I speak was about 200m below Mabel falls and was made of Uni-strut. The crossing now steps down to creek level and all of the metal has been removed. The dam below the falls (interesting sandstone blocks) was similar in 1990 as it is today. The original dam would be 100 years old I reckon.

      We both started in volleys, they stopped making large sizes, so that stopped my partner from canyoning. When we discovered bestards, we could not believe how good they were, seriously, sometimes too grippy when trying to slide down a rock. But, they give you a lot of confidence when walking on most surfaces. Slimy rocks will always be like ice skating. On the walk in and out, very supportive. Certainly not the cheapest, but, these are specialist boots designed for one purpose, and for that, they excel. Glad you like the channel, we have more canyons coming up over winter.

      We both wear Scarpa brand hiking boots, hard wearing but like ice skates on anything wet. Basically anything in your budget, that is comfortable is all you need. Scarpa has not been without issues, one pair the sole keeps delaminating and the other the stitching has failed in the same place on both boots. We may look at other brands in the future.

    Thanks for sharing the clips, to be honest I kind of regret not visiting it before the upgrades 😅 The concrete pathway inside the tunnel looks really bad 🤦‍♂

    • @shoesonmyfeet6056
      @shoesonmyfeet6056 Před měsícem

      The new pathway is much safer, and it means that people now have more stable footing and aren't calling out, disturbing the glow-worms, every time they tread on a rock or in water. They new path only takes up half the tunnel, so the original path can still be viewed for the construction marvel this tunnel is.

    • @PavoTreks
      @PavoTreks Před měsícem

      @@shoesonmyfeet6056 ok in that case it makes sense, hopefully the glow worms were not disturbed while they were constructing this path as there was most likely lots of noise inside the tunnel during that time

    • @shoesonmyfeet6056
      @shoesonmyfeet6056 Před měsícem

      I am sure NPWS did a study into the impact during construction. Having said that, a lot of the work was done in the cooler months, so less glow worms than summer. The path does make it more enjoyable, the handrail especially, you can lean up against it, turn your torch out and let the total darkness take over. The glow worms will start to appear quickly as your eyes adjust. We give the upgrade the thumbs up for this reason.
