What makes Oda's introduction of Mihawk at this stage in the manga so genius is that it lets you know how big the world is compared to what you've seen so far. Up to this point , you've seen Luffy beat every enemy he's faced so you think Luffy is really strong, if not invincible. Then you see Mihawk & you realize that there are monsters out there on a completely different level.
Also, to this point, you've assumed that devil fruit eaters are the strongest people in the world, & then Mihawk shows up & annihilates an entire fleet with just his supreme skill with a sword & Oda lets you know that devil fruit powers are not the end all be all.

Few things you missed or weren't covered in the episode.
    1. The Sword guy's full name is Dracule Mihawk. As the world's greatest swordsman, his nickname is Hawkeye Mihawk due to his hawk-like eyes.
    2. Ussop's eye is so good that he could read the name of Baratie even before anybody else saw it and he read it when they were in the mist.
    3. The guy, who got free food from Sanji and talked about losing 50 ships in Grand Line. He was a part of the ship destroyed by Mihawk. We can see the logo on his clothes. So basically, Mihawk sliced 50 ships like that.

@@markcruz359 No, Mihawk's nickname wasn't mentioned in live action episode, but it was mentioned in the anime episode. Characters in the anime mostly call him by his nickname. Also, to answer your question, Mihawk is a solo pirate and his boat is a coffin. In anime it is specifically shown, but in live action, we can see the coffin boat in episode 1 when Roger gave his speech and we see every pirate ship leaving.

    • @happyslapsgiving5421
      @happyslapsgiving5421 Před 5 měsíci +9

      Not really.
The Don Krieg pirates were defeated and mostly destroyed in the Grand Line.
*What remained* of them, which includes at least one ship, retreated to the East Blue, had an accidental encounter with Mihawk, woke him from his nap, and were devastated.
Then, in the live action, only Gin remained.
In the manga / anime, besides Gin, also Don Krieg, Pearl and a few more mooks survived that, and had to be taken out by Luffy and Sanji.
Which, incidentally, makes Sanji feeding a starving Gin much more relevant than in the live action, because there was a risk that Gin would bring his whole crew to raid the Baratie, and Sanji helped him anyway.
While in the live action, the only consequence was one more plate to wash.

Spartan wouldn't have remembered Garp being Luffy's grandpa because that revelation is way too far in the anime. They just put Garp's (and Koby's) storylines now along with the crew's adventure to make the series have that contrast between the pirates and marines and their own respective good/bad sides.

For another, Zoro and Usopp have no reason to know. Zoro gives no shits, Usopp is a small village orphan who probably didnt go to school or anything.

What I love about Mihawks introduction this early into the story is that it comes to show the heights that Zoro (and Luffy) have to reach to achieve their dreams.
Mihawk is so far ahead of Zoro at this point, that it's hard to put into words.
If we put it in terms of sports... Zoro is a 4 year old that kicked a ball for the first time and liked it and Mihawk is the best player of the world ever. And even this is a bit of an understatement.
Later when we find out Mihawks bounty (prior to cancelation), we realize why Oda chose to not reveal it... It would make every villain (except one or two) in the East Blue and Grand Line pale in comparison.

People always say that fancy restaurants have such small portions but the point is you get lots of different courses. It adds up to a full meal. The increased labor costs means higher prices, and naturally if the prices are higher they can afford better chefs to make those dishes better, so the economics of it work out exactly as they should. The problem is with people going to such restaurants thinking they're going to order one dish of slop and fill their bellies instead of understanding it's a full experience with the finest ingredients and preparations available. You're buying service and a memory.

One thing worth pointing out, the reason why Luffy has to work a year washing dishes is because he ordered one of everything on the entire menu. It's either seen or implied that everybody else has money on them to pay for their food (Nami bribes the host, I believe I recall Zoro offers to buy drinks, and we know that Ussop had an actual job until recently)

The reason only Luffy had to do dishes was because only Luffy couldn’t pay for what he ordered and he ordered 1 of everything. Zoro(bounty hunter), Nami(master thief) and Usopp(shipyard worker) all had money, which is how they could keep getting drinks afterwards. It was Nami’s money that got them a table to begin with remember.

13:02 So the reason why Mihawk’s bounty is cancelled is because he’s one of Shichibukai, also known as the Seven Warlords. The Seven Warlords are 7 powerful pirates who, in exchange for their bounties being frozen, have to assist the Marines & World Government in any situation they need them for.
If you continue on with the series, you will meet all of them & they all have importance.

Just for context since i see you're a Dragon Ball fan , in DBZ terms Hawk-Eye showing up so early in the story would be like Kid Buu showing up the second Vegeta lands on earth. It's brilliant long term story telling.

    26:21 Two meanings for that.
One is that your opponent is a coward because they attacked when you weren't looking and couldn't defend yourself.
The other is that your back is injured because you turned and ran away from a fight like a coward.
Either way, a scarred back (unless it's from whips) is the sign of a coward. And to many that is, or was the greatest shame imaginable.

Garp certainly wants Luffy to play by the rules, but at the same time he lives vicariously through his grandson. This leads to a complicated relationship where he's both enraged and proud of the grandson he raised.
