  • King Salmon season is about to open and I wanted to take the time to talk to you about my favorite fish to catch. This is a "how to" for the salmon fisherman with little experience or someone who is thinking about getting started. This video will help teach you the basics so you too can catch a salmon outside of the Golden Gate Bridge in the San Francisco bay area. I talk about the salmon season and how it progresses through the year. I teach you how I find the salmon and what to look for. I also discuss your bait options like a krippled anchovy or watermelon apex. I do go over some of the regulations for California Salmon fishing. I put in a lot of old video footage to help illustrate what I am talking about. All footage was recorded by me. The whale feeding on anchovies is my best glimpse yet of the whales out there and I was recording! I hope you enjoy and learn something. Please let me know your tips and tricks in the comments. Please consider subscribing, its free, it helps the channel grow so I can continue to deliver content. Thanks Chris

    Thanks for your pitch at the end about ethics. I HATE when people release keeper-sized. fish, especially after netting them. I understand the temptation to high grade, but as you said, the mortality rate on released fish is considerable.

    Good advice Chris, my 2 cents if you have to measure it don’t let it go. The fish do not do well if you handle them, I would rather come home with no fish. There is always next time. So this has been my concept of salmon fishing for the past 55yrs that I been salmon fishing in the Bay Area....

    Have you tried using the gaff hook to release the Salmon off the barbless hook. Grab the leader 24" above the hook.slide the gaff along the leader till it meets the corner of the mouth and barbless hook. (Gaff hook is pointed upwards away from the fish)
    Pull the rod end of the leader towards the water. While lifting the gaff end upwards. The hook just slides out. Never handling the fish at all. And no netting required

    Great video! So excited for salmon this year. I finished last year dropping a 20+ pounder at the boat and it has eaten away at me all off-season. lol One small suggestion for the Apex lures is I re-tie them with fluorocarbon, a better hook, swivel and ball chain. Hope to see you out there some day!

    Need a step by step on what to do with the fish once you get it on board...bashing it, storing it, cutting it, gutting it, filets, leave the head on?, put in water, no water, ice. How long will it last in a cooler or fish holder on boat?

    • @ChrisPfish2
      @ChrisPfish2  Před 3 lety +1

      thanks for the idea. I might do another how to salmon this year. To answer your question though, first verify its a king, then bonk it on the head. Put it in a bleed box or bucket and cut its gills on both sides. After 5-10 mins rinse it with salt water. I then gut it. You must leave its head on and cant fillet it until your on land to verify size and species with dfg. Then lots of ice, try to avoid it sitting in fresh water. Hope that helps

    • @ChrisPfish2
      @ChrisPfish2  Před 4 lety

      You know my dad taught me not to pay so much attention to troll speed but to your rpms. On my boat I go 1rpm exactly. That will get me going about 1.75-3.75 mph depending on all the other factors. so as I make my circles I fluctuate between those speeds.

    • @ChrisPfish2
      @ChrisPfish2  Před 4 lety +1

      I really appreciate the kind words! I love my boat but I would not get it again because its put together with rivets. Avoid any boat that has rivets. Very hard or impossible to repair. I drifted on a submerged tree at lake sonoma last year. Hardly moving, seemed like no biggy, no real physical damage to see besides a scrape. Then the leaking slowly started. Lets just say I was very lucky to have insurance. Rivets were the problem and I was advised to stay away from those build of boats after sharing my experience with boaters. Wont get a riveted boat again.

    • @ChrisPfish2
      @ChrisPfish2  Před 4 lety +1

      2.5-4.5 mph. Look at your bait in the water before you let it down, get the right action on it. Once you get the right action dont look at your mph, look at your rpm. Stay on that rpm. The mph will flugucate between 2-4.5 mph because the boat never stays constant speed on ocean because all the factors wind, waves, current. hope that helps
