Suzuki SX4 - Rear Wheel Bearing & A Hard To Clear ABS Light
Vložit
- čas přidán 13. 03. 2024
- In this video I have a go at a customers Suzuki SX4 that came in with an ABS light on. A visual inspection after reading the codes revealed a corroded and broken wire at the right rear ABS sensor. It's wheel bearing time!
-Enjoy!

If Erics not going to say it, I will ..."Welcome Back Viewers To South Main Auto, We Got A Suzuki with the BIG 4 cylinder" There ... now I can go watch.
lmao
you forgot the mileage
😂😂😂😂😂😂
@parad... Thought these were 3 cylinders ❓
He would say the displacement, not number of cylinders. "....the big 1.4"
I so want an interview with "mowerman"
The guy should just bring the mower in for service.
@@michaelsnively3621 - It would be brought in weekly if it's operating hour-based maintenance.
In michigan yesterday we has our big bay door open.the first day in the season you do it. it is awesome.fresh air while working really lifts your spirits.
Oh man it sure does. Love that first day we get to leave the bay doors open all afternoon. Sure makes you feel good!
Yea then by July it’s so ass-hot outside, you’re begging for fall to roll around
Love the wind up this morning "going to throw some parts at it". I love Eric's sense of humour.
Hello to the O's from the li'l ole England...
As the official bearing aficionado of this channel, we haven't had a bearing video in a while!
Almost as long as having the brakleen
@@thomasfletcher760😂
I never understand why anyone would say negative things about your work. You do excellent work. I think you work on everyone's car as if it was your own.
Some people thinks that they are just better than others. It's pretty common in the US I guess
Such as the torque Nazis. If they had any idea about reality, they would understand that torque figures on stuff like this don't matter much. Tight enough to not come loose, and loose enough that you don't over stretch the bolt. This can all be done by feel.
@@paulstandaert5709 no I don't think so. Torque is important specifically on a part which literally holds the wheel. But I know what you mean. I had a co worker who used a torque wrench on m6 bolts from the window lifting part. When saw this I had to leave otherwise I would laugh. In some cases it's really torqued to feel but it should be a really good experience for the stuff you work on it or at least use a bit lock tide.
@@imtheeastgermanguy5431 some people have no aptitude for the feel of a bolt tightening to a sufficient amount, in which case a torque wrench is going to be necessary. I have tightened probably tens of thousands of fasteners over the decades and just know the feel. When bolts are rusty, the torque figures are bogus because of the friction coefficient. A rusty fastener will take a lot more torque to achieve the same clamping force as that of a freshly plated bolt going into clean metal. When it takes 35 ft lbs just to get that axle nut to move before it actually clamps anything, that alone makes the torque figure bogus.
And the way I learned it is that as long as a fastener has sufficient thread engagement and is appropriately stretched, no amount of vibrations will loosen it. If they do get violent enough to loosen the fastener, the forces involved have exceeded the yield strength of the bolts and now the whole fastening system has been weakened significantly. But a bolt will still keep it in place. This is where thread locking can be beneficial. Also in situations where the fastener cannot be sufficiently stretched. Like a steel nut and bolt holding a toilet seat on. Stretching the bolt would crack the ceramic. That toilet seat WILL come loose over time. Thread locker can prevent that.
You know, back in the day, the only time I ever used a torque wrench was for head bolts. I don't remember any of my cars falling apart.
What’s amazing to me about Eric is how consistently “on” he is… if I took videos EVERY DAY at work I can assure you in at least half of them I’d be in a crap mood or at least not feel like explaining what I’m doing.
When you love what you do, work becomes zen
And have your love in the next room.
I've been following him since 2018 and I only remember him being in a foul mood once. Apparently he was mad at his kids. He was reallly upset. There are also times when he's sick but for the most part he's our Eric. I usually watch Ivan's channel first, then Eric's.
I worked with some of the best techs in the business at GM Engineering. Eric would put them on ice. He takes on these rusty pieces of crap with fervor and wins the battle every time. Epic!
Almost 3K views in only 50 minutes. That says ALLOT about your viewers and more importantly why they follow you! Awesome job!

Hey, forget about it, I never had a doubt that you would get it fixed Eric. You deserve some ice cream after this one.
Even if the video is about a car that I know I will never work on, I will still watch just for the torque spec trolling. Eric is awesome!
I'd watch SMA even if I had to sit through ads. It's that good !
I worked for an import dealer as a Kia and Mitsu tech, and they needed a Suzuki tech when they picked up the Suzuki line (before Suzuki quit making cars for the American market). Guess who got thrown into that role? Anyway, I had this EXACT same issue on a Suzuki. Drove me nuts. I called tech assist (their were only 2 guys on tech assist for all of America at that time). They told me the way to clear ABS codes was to run a dtc test, while driving above 40 mph, and clear it while driving. Then disconnect the OBD2 connecter, reconnect it, and re test for codes. All while driving! Insane. I had tried everything before that, including just driving the car. Tech Assist's hokey pokey solution worked.
I was a mechanic at a Suzuki dealership in the late 2000's and we didn't have many problems with them. I bought a 2000 Grand Vitara and drove it for 17 years and 160K miles with no codes on any systems and zero repairs other then normal maitness items. I wish Suzuki still sold vehicles in the US
I still own and drive a suzy gv 2006, still going strong at 170k! Love my Suzy ❤
‘04 GV 166k; ‘10 GV 189k here! Surprisingly great vehicles!
2008 sx4 with 130.000 miles and no problems,
O7 sx4 with 250,000 it was great
Eric was on fire today with the jokes and sarcasm... one of the reasons I love watching!
LMAO with lawn mower guy already being outside. He’s become a true staple at SMA
When you're good like Eric it all comes naturally.
I have one of these SX4s. I don't know why they didn't sell better here in the US. They're very reliable, don't rot away, were a cheap AWD, and are easy to work on. They do have a tendency to have intermittent ABS problems which affect the traction control and throw a light. I just drive mine and it goes away eventually. Parts availability is a problem, I have to get everything from RockAuto.
Yep, we have a SX4 sedan with over 200 k. We a fam of 6 Toyotas but our Suzuki has been an absolutely reliable beater, we haven't done crap except oil changes. Probably needs shocks and engine mounts but we don't care 😅
Yeah the Susuki are excellent runners, I would not hesitate to buy another with low mileage.
Everyone in my shop used to get mad at me for using an air hammer on rotors because the noise but after seeing you use that method it makes getting rotors off so much easier
How much fun - if you are watching this video please keep in mind nobody is there with him other than the camera. He is basically talking to himself but does a good job like we are all there in the room with him. I love how he is able to actually interact with us -- this video was probably completed a while back. So much fun either way - he has a great personality and just loves to entertain the CZcams crowd. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos and its always great to have a laugh -- all the while we are educated on how to work on our cars!
I have worked on funky Suzuki cars in the UK for coming up 30 years. I was sitting here grinning like an idiot waiting for you to go on another road test and getting the magic point where it just says 🛤️ oh yeah man that’s far enough I can put the light out now. In general for the uk they are a good car for our salt belt. Loads of surface rust but not much in the way of falling to bit’s corrosion. Good video again boss
81 degrees here today - 36 degrees tomorrow night. Should be 200 degrees by June with global warming and all. Love your videos man!
Been up early with big storm coming through now and great to find two Eric O videos! Thanks you SMA and After hours!
“Lawn mower man already been outside.” Love it
Wonderful, classic episode Eric. Love those wheel bearing and brake job vidjas. Full of ugga dugga action, old-school wisdom, martial arts and Fluid Film. The only thing missing was the brake cleaner. We can't always get what we want, but we always get what we need! ha ha.
Learn something new everyday. Now my day is complete. Thanks.
Wheel bearing with an oriental mood :-) Good job, Eric!
You have become very comfortable and entertaining, as well as educational! Thanks for sharing!
Eric you always make me smile
I love how you are experienced and got control on what you are doing.
The best of the best. Thanks Eric.
Just drive the little guy. Hey i like those extended impact swivels.👌 Thanks Eric have a good weekend.
Eric, you are a master of automotive systems and excellent at giving us viewers understanding of them. Thanks .
Thank you Erick for another entertaining video. Hope you and Ms O are doing okay
Eric, you always do more work than most other shops would do, like cleaning up the surface and surrounding from the next repairs are easier for the easier to do.😊
Nice to see someone other than me still use the good ole air tools.
Mr O love your videos keep em coming
South Main Auto = Real Life auto repairs
Absolute faith in your lift. Donkey kick the wheel, while it's on the vehicle, from UNDER the car. Eric really is my hero. Fear nothing.
The lift has pins every foot and a half or so, and after you've lifted the vehicle in the air, it's usually lowered onto the 4 pins, securing it and preventing it from falling should the lift hydraulics fail.
I wouldn't worry about it; I have called myself much worse. Love the video
Thanks for the video Eric.
Oh how I love the sound of air tools doin their job!
Well done. The Suzuki lives to fight another day.
Some good information, Thanks much for the video. Please enjoy your day.
No mercy reversey...I love it
You’ve got me addicted to FF! I use this stuff on so many things. We live at the beach so everything rusts here.
Gotta love the minute-maid thread lock
The orange lock tight, holds like red, releases like blue,
Our efforts expended, yet outcomes askew.
In the grip of frustration, we struggle anew,
With each passing moment, uncertainty grew.
😢 so moving....
Nice job Mr O. Been having problems with dodge one parts taking 2 or 3 weeks. I feel your pain.
Thanks again Eric that was another good video cheers Paul 😊
One thing I like to do with my impact sockets when new, is to spray the inside of the socket with some oily type of lube and they tend to release better from the fastener. Astro makes some dang good tools for the money. Useful tools too. Calling yourself an a-hole is pretty mild, Eric. I've cussed at myself for a good hour sometimes depending on the mistake or problem. My wife told me it was somewhat amazing because I evidently never repeated my insults to myself or whatever I was working on.
If I could start my life over I would travel to two I would choose to go and learn it’s to north main or to the car care nut because you two guys are great mechanics but at my age I am too old now but I enjoy the work you guys do and your knowledge, thanks for sharing.
Best in the Business ❤
Also I have changed a few wheel bearings and my 2017 Kia Forte S is way different you just get the front bearing itself and have to press it off and on a lot more labor but I got it done And a big kudos to you for your very interesting informative videos and you sure keep our interest to watch it all the way through 🔔
Great video as usual. For what it's worth, most critics of your videos are probably just jealous of your mechanical knowledge, experience, and professionalism. Keep it up!
Greetings from Australia Eric. Love the channel and respect to Mrs. O for putting up with you
Suzuki, yugo, Citroen and more. People love em! Well, you got it fixed and on it's way. Good one
Mr. O!
Since you used a torque wrench with an extension and a swivel, now I know it's okay for me to do it, too! Thanks, Mr. O!
so, a while back i bought a can of fluid film after watching you use it for years now, I live in the south and have only used it on hubs for the occasional stuck wheel. Its good stuff. It does smell funny and after catching a whiff of it for the first time the ole goat noise, which wasent in this video by the way, is 100% accurate. Thanks for the great videos Mr. O.
I cant believe that people would be that critical of your work. Lol. Always a great job.
The commentary while working on the chevy tracker/Suzuki was seamless. Probably took longer to reset the codes than fix the bearing. Happy Friday from south central Michigan.
love your show i am always learning..
I bought an 1832 Nano in 1/2", entirely because of watching you use that wrench. It's awesome. You're a great example for Astro... I hope they know it.
They know it
@@TorqueTestChannel Nice to see TTC here watching EricO.
Yes, rest assured, it is a BIG engine!
You got one of those lawnmower man also...he was out the first warm day we had rolling the front yard...lol
Just be glad you didn't have the problem Jake had over at the "Automotive Diagnostics & Programming" channel. That one was wild!
Dr O at his best!!
cold weather comin back but at least the lawn is cut
Here in middle Tennessee the weather has been pretty good.
Thanks Eric.
Hey Eric I'm from maine love the content I own and operate a shop myself
I'm glad you didn't lose your mind..
Thanks I like it And think that big dawg zapper that loosened the rotor helped loosen the wheel bearing too🙃
Eric explained torqueing with an extension very accurately, if you torque with a crowsfoot or any side angle adapter it will change your torque value on the bolt or nut, the reason you are limited on length of extension is because a super long extension will have some twist in it when applying a torque.
Even with a long extension, the torque value indicated by the torque wrench will be the same. There will be some twist of the long extension, but it does not affect the applied torque if it is applied slowly.
In the case of an impact wrench, the length of the extension affects the torque applied because the torque impulses are absorbed by the torsion of a long extension. The longer the extension, the lower the resulting torque. That's how torque limiter extensions work.
I'm sitting here eating my lunch, and, well, Eric O, I am thoroughly entertained.
It's not always that easy in FL. Anything by the saltwater rusts just as badly. So it just matters where you live in FL lol. Another great video Eric O!
Corrosion X HD (green label) works as well down here on the Texas coast instead of Fluid Film. Use it on my bay boat. The red label can be used in electronics so is perfect for spraying down my entire Yamaha outboard power head when performing my annual maintenance. 10 year old engine still looks new under the cowling. 😊
Thanks Eric
Perfect timing!! I saw a Suzuki on the way back to the house for the first time in as long as I can remember. I thought they stopped selling them in the states.
Yeah, looks like a good alternative to a similar Toyota RAV4 for the 4wd mini SUV gendre
But as Eric O stated, replacement part availability is dismal for this vehicle😢
Suzuki a brand are hugely popular here Australia and are generally very reliable. I’ve had 3 swifts.
I've got 2 Suzuki Swift Sport in Australia....great cars.
love your vides been heating n betting sence 82 body is shot good luck bro
Suzuki SX4 is such a cute car.
Your the BEST!!
Surprising, the lawn mower guy is not out yet?
Nice work, as always
Eric as a user of the Orange Loctite I can tell you it holds less than the Red (not by much though) and releases with slightly more force than the blue (again not by much). I've used it for quite a while now and have had to remove things I had put on with it. Keep on keeping on Bud and thanks for your videos!
Enjoying your videos!!
Great..and funny..AlwYs looking forward to watching videos
your work cadence and monologue are on point, and mesh perfectly. great video, as always.
Love my 2000 Grand Vitara V6 4wd manual. Had to wait a few weeks for Safelite to find a windshield this year. Had to rig a different but similar EVAP solenoid since OEM no longer available. It is a challenge, but that Suzuki is one of my fleet thats easier to get parts for.
I suspect your hypotheses about the steering angle sensor is right, it's probably like the first gen Mazda 6 or RX8, steering stop to stop and the next key cycle she'll be cleared. Amazing this little SX4 wasn't rotted out in your land or rust!
If I were to venture a guess I would say Lawnmower man is an older married fella just trying to get a little time to himself. Anyway, great video with first rate commentary as always. Have a great weekend
Another episode of the Eric O comedy show "Thanks for watching".🤣
Gonna share it on SX4 club!
Nice work
Great video Eric. L I e when you do classroom.
Another great job.
He loves what he does.
Eric O’…Another Great Video! First nice day, is Lawnmower man mowing Grass already?? Good to see that you are human. I am always dropping stuff and having trouble starting simple bolts.
