14:35: Conclusion
It is hard to believe that the Nintendo Wii is now a retro console, but that is the case. The Wii is such an amazingly fun system, from hardcore, okay, not really hardcore gamers, to the casual enthusiast, really a lot of the casuals, the Wii sold like gangbusters. It's amazing that would be the case considering the fact it's never included an HDMI output, and the max resolution out was 480p. There are a number of solutions now designed to tap into the AV output on the Wii and give you an HDMI output, such as the Wii to HD cable from Hyperkin. Promising full 480p output and considerably more convenient to connect, we decided to take a look at it.
This isn't the first one of these cables that Hyperkin has produced, however, it does have some changes to it. On one end, the cable features a standard HDMI connector, on the other, a molded connector that will plug right into your Wii. There is a box that handles all the signal processing and conversion to get you to that HDMI output. In other such cables, Hyperkin has added a micro USB port in the event additional separate power is needed. For the Wii cable, that is omitted as it appears all the necessary power is drawn off of the system itself. It also does not have a 4x3 or 16x9 aspect ratio switch, as that is handled directly by the Wii in the settings menu. Connecting to your system really couldn't get much easier. Disconnect your existing Cable, whether you using composite or component, plug this in, and plug the other end of the 7 ft long cable into your television & from here you are ready to play.
Upon firing up the system with the cable plugged in, I thought the graphics looked a little bit fuzzy, it was definitely not as clear as I was expecting or hoping for. I don't know if this is tapping into the composite, component, or S-Video, but I almost bet they're tapping into composite here, which is unfortunate. I thought the colors looked darker than component, and the jaggies were much more present. The audio sounded good, if not maybe a tad bit over modulated. I will say I did not notice any significant lag on here, but I did have my television set to Game mode, which would have compensated for any of that.
Whether I was playing Wii titles or GameCube titles, my Wii is backward compatible, I saw very similar results. The reds looked a bit hot to me, the audio was a bit overmodulated, but the overall experience was playable. When comparing the Wii2HD adapter, we recently tested out (check out that video here • How Good Can A Cheap W... ) I felt that for the money the adapter provided a better visual experience than Hyperkin's cable.
Why it RoX
- Under $25
- No separate power supply needed
- Plug and play convenience
- Supports 480p output
- Decent performance
What could be improved:
- Not as sharp as the Wii to HDMI adapter
- Colors appear to be oversaturated
- Audio seems slightly over modulated
- 7-ft long cable may not be long enough for some
Should you buy one?
Hyperkin has made a number of these types of cables, for the Super NES, Nintendo 64, Genesis (with the wrong adapter), and others, and this appears to be a very similar model. I was disappointed that the visual quality was not higher than what it was, this literally seems like it is one of those AV2HDMI adapters in a prettier package. Things felt more jaggy, the color seemed oversaturated, and while it didn't ruin the experience, there are better ways to get good visuals out of the Wii. I find it curious that they advertise some of their other cables as outputting 720p, yet this is limited only to 480P, which literally means all you are doing is converting the connector. For the money, I would recommend going with something like the HD Retrovision component video cables for just a few dollars more as they will provide superior visuals in my opinion, however, they do require you to still have component video inputs on your television. For HDMI, these are usable, but It's not great.

I’m soooo ready for this video to premiere, I’ve been needing a good Wii hdmi cable. I’m trying to free up some space on the back of my CRT, and the Wii looks fine on an hdtv.
@@SirSiegward Looking forward to seeing you in the premiere! This is also live already for all Channel Members and Patreon Supporters too!!
@@RoXolid I’ll become a channel member very soon, just waiting on the money for cutting the grass. XD the teenager troubles.
I can respect that! I remember cutting many lawns to pay for my RC Racing, good on you for having a work ethic!!
@@RoXolid I usually offer to cut my whole neighborhood’s lawns. I charge $10 for a front yard cut, and $5 for backyard cut, and since I’m in Alabama and winter barely exists here, I can cut people’s yards year-round. Everyone is so nice and open to letting a 14 year old cut some yards that when I ask, most say yes, and very few say no. I have some “regular customers” that call me a week before they need their lawn cut. It’s pretty fun, and I get a great source of money for my hobbies. My parents wanted pay for the gas when I started, and they still do! So all of my money is just pure cash, no little side taxes like gas money. I do the whole door to door thing every once in a while, I usually pick months out of the year dedicated to just cutting lawns and doing the door to door asking thing. And Since I’m homeschooled, I can cut yards throughout the week easily, to have a “flow of money” I give everyone my phone number so they can call me to come back. My parents don’t make me pay for gas money, because I’m still considered a kid, and they think that unfair you’re too young to work a job. You need to be treated like you don’t work a job, I chose to do this lawn thing, so I get the money at my own will, whereas in the real world. You kinda have to get somewhat job to live a pleasant life.

Nice review Gary! It looks like a nice unit.
Thanks for checking it out!
Just the video I needed. I got a Retrotink 5X just for the Wii and am ordering HD Retrovision cables to go with it for the maximum experience. From what I have seen, they really do make a big difference for making those colors pop and the Wii needs all of the help it can get due to its dark and washed-out video output that is much better on the Gamecube.
The Wii component cables are great, and thru the Retrotink, it's amazing
@@RoXolid the official Nintendo component cables?
Do the hyperkin HDMI cables specifically for the PS2 do they support component or is it just RGB?
They're not even component, they're S video at Best
I want if this able will work I load of hombrew emulators on my Wii tries cheap hdmi adapter did not do you if product will work with emulators
Great video my man. But you really got to tell me what tshirt that is you are wearing. That shirt is awesome! Yoshi/Alien crossover 😍😍😍
I saw it 2 years ago at the Bloomington Normal GameCon even someone had it. I googled Yoshi Xenomorph and found it that way
@@RoXolid thanks a lot bud. I’m going to Google the crap out of it! 😎
I just made the mistake of getting the hyperkin cable for Snes Jr before realizing it doesn't work on that system. I might try to mod it later to get it working but for now I'll probably exchange it for this Wii cable.
What is the best adapter to hdmi for the best price. And also does this stretch it out when used in full screen or not?
Just curious why you would use it in full screen when you have a wide screen TV. Just set the Wii to whatever setting your TV I on.
on wii, my fav experience. ?.... i'd say it has a lot of different games i love them all, need for speed carbon, sonics, marios , Fire emblem radiant dawn , motion control and i loved playing Driver parallel lines
Donkey Kong Country Returns and New Super Mario Brothers Wii. are definitely some of my favorites.
2 great games!
What would you recommend I should use if I want to plug my Wii into a HD tv because I have my Wii modded to play GameCube games
For the money, that Wii to HDMI adapter I covered last week is really pretty decent. I'm a bigger fan of dongles like this that you can use whatever cable length that you might need, and it did honestly look to be a higher resolution.
@@RoXolid I tried the link you had for that I couldn't see the price for it
The one that I use last week I saw did sell out, I would bookmark it and just keep checking back. I don't know if or when it will come in, but I would also just look for other similar units
Hey sorry if you’ve been asked this a ton. I’m just curious what the best option for HDMI on Wii is? I got a Wii2HDMI and I can confirm it’s hit or miss. Even mine is really hit or miss itself lol. It’ll have scan lines but they go away after a short bit or If I choose interlace mode on GameCube games then it doesn’t happen.
Anyway I’m just getting a few Wii’s together for friends so any help is appreciated, seem like you know ur stuff
So the best would be to get the HD Retrovision Component Video cables and then go into a RetroTink 5x
@@RoXolid thanks a ton, do you have any videos on modding for the Wii? Seems straight forward but I’m sure it’s daunting to him. I also saw there’s a USB channel so I’m not sure if he’ll just need a large SD card. Appreciate it
@@RoXolid I’m just showing him the modding stuff so he won’t have to spend a fortune on the boys. So that’ll be about all he’s doing
@@Shendapy I do not but check out @Gaming Off the Grid, I think Wes has posted some stuff.
@@RoXolid are mayflash’s any good? I mean he’ll obviously find out soon but that’s what he has coming in the mail shortly.
Does the Wii2HDMI looks good if you’re playing a game cube game on the Wii?
The colors didn't look this blown out, but honesty, Gamecube emulation is more about convinience than authenticity. My recommendation, if you're looking to play GC Games via HDMI, is to get a Gamecube with the digital output and pick up a Prism HDMI Adapter or Carby HDMI Adapter.
Have you tested Bitfunx HDMI adapter for Wii?
No and I will never feature Bitfunx. All they do is steel designs from other companies and I will not reward their poor business practices by giving them a second of time on my channel
Say you use your wii to watch movies or play nes and snes. How does this look when used for those purposes
About the same as your see here
What wii adaptor would you recommend for the best general experience on HDMI TV?
I wouldn't honestly. I'd use HD Retrovision Component video cables, the results are much better for similar cost
@@RoXolid what if HDMI ports were the only
Plug-ins on this TV?
Then I'd get HD Retrovision component cables and a RetroTink 5x
@@RoXolid, what if I have only a single kidnee and can´t afford sell it?
This cable outputs 480p HDMI. It's a perfect partner for the MClassic! which will output the smoothest 1440p on most 4k TV's.
ALL JAGGYs GONE!
My TV doesn't recognize 1440P, 1080P Max
@@RoXolid
Sweet!
Try using Hyperkin cable, output 480p on Wii.
Let the mClassic upscale to 1080p. Next best thing to 1440.
@@IowaRonin actually I just use my retro tink 5X
I have sound issues it cuts in and out abruptly might be cus I'm running thru a splitter
What happens if you bypass the splitter?
@@RoXolid fixes the problem but I have to disconnect something from the tv to connect the wii the whole point of the splitter was to avoid that
@@bloodeagle6458 What are you splitting exactly? Are you trying to go to 2 different TVs or are you trying to get multiple inputs into 1 HDMI port?
@@RoXolid I have a splitter routing thru an 8 port switcher witch works great with everything but the wii from what I've been hearing since the wii only outputs 480p and not 1080p that's what might be causing the audio problem
I recently got one, but sadly, it's outputting some glaring visual noise. Any ideia what might be the cause? I believe I did everything right: output 480p resolution, 16:9, screen burn-in reduction etc.
I would contact Hyperkin and see if they have any suggestions
Did you figure it out?
Retrotink can do 1440p which would blow these other two solutions out of the water. I know you were doing a 1:1 comparison, but it would be nice to see the best of the best solutions too.
I have done system spotlights for other systems on the RetroTink 5X, the Wii is one of them I still need to do. That being said, my TV and my capture card do not recognize the higher resolutions, so in those videos I will likely stick to 1920x1080
If you want to make the best picture quality for the Wii, get the HD Retrovision component cable for Wii because this cable makes Wii graphics look amazing and a lot more details.
I actually have the OEM Nintendo ones goinginto my RetroTInk 5X, and man, it looks soooooooooooo good!!
Hey Gary have you ever tried the Component cable hookup?
The RetroTink 5x Footage uses official Nintendo Component video Cables/
Thanks
@@realtime4559 of course!
Gary.. if you ever take requests… please try the Kaico PS2 cables. I’m curious about it before I plunk $40 (Canadian) on it. Thanks in advance.
I do take requests, however, you will never see a Kaico product on my channel. They have terrible business practices, tried to steal copyrighted materials from Mike Chi, and I will not use my channel to promote them in any way.
See here for details:
www.retrotink.com/post/retrotink-2x-cloned
Arthrimus is doing HDMI mods for the Wii at the moment. He state quality is better than running Wii games thru a Wii U.
Wii on the Wii u isn't great, I know there are more kits out there but honestly Wii Component to a Retrotink 5x is gorgeous
@@RoXolid You might be right. I prefer to have hdmi cable to connect directly from the TV to the console. Once I get my wii hdmi modded then I going to attach a mclassic adapter to my wii. I will tell you about my experience if I actual notice a upgrade with mclassic.
I think jaggies are just part of 480p resolution, but I don't think it looks bad.
But if there's a way to eliminate them I am all in favor of that
@@RoXolid M Classic but at that point you would be better off using component and the Retrotink 5x
At that point you're not dealing with 480p anymore, you're dealing with 1080p
@@RoXolid exactly and you would no longer need this adapter at that point.
Wtf is jaggies
My favorite game to play on the Wii was MarioKart Wii
just got a set of these cables and too be honest if ur tv does componet its better too use those cables .. my cables has signal line troubles and the picture is too dark.. it may work better on another tv but the one in my game room is just blah..
RE4 for the Wii is def the best version by far... though I have not played the VR version on the Oculus yet. As for the cables.. I use Wii component cables on an HD CRT in 480p mode. But maybe I'll try one of these out since it has a single HDMI input.
I have also not played the VR Version, but could be interesting)
I bought a component cable from Monoprice years ago that claims 480 resolution. This doesn't look any better.
That makes sense, this is also outputting 480P
I bought the Mayflash wii to hdmi adapter from Amazon, and I stuck the Mclassic on the back, and wow! It makes the wii look so much better. Even more so than the Rt5x via component I dare say. The gamecube games on wii are comparable to Carby+Mclassic. I'm not sure if you reviewed the Mayflash adapter yet. I've heard mixed results with the hyperkkin and wii2hdmi adapter. Adam Korelik hates them both lol.
I ordered one earlier today to test out
@@RoXolid I'd say its on par with the component cables if there is no Mclassic involved. Maybe its my TV, but it defaulted to 4:3 even though the wii and TV were in 16:9. The Mclassic changed the aspect ratio to be correct once I flipped the switch to green. Just something to look out for. Might not do that on your setup.
Mclassic is good for PS3 and 360 in my experience. I put the mayflash and Mclassic on my Wii and well, now I'm waiting on hd retrovision component cables. 😕
Hi, can any of you guys tell me if the mclassic works fine just by plugging it into the back of the mayflash adapter? Or do you need a splitter or some other device?
@@dr.bosconovitch2594 works if you just stick it in the back. The Mclasssic needs to accept a 480p or 720p signal in order to do any upscaling.
:) can this finally be an interference free solution? Available in the UK too on Amazon but typically more expensive. Look forward to hearing your views :)
Very cool!
Just bought one of these cables and I'm getting no video output at all.
Did you connect the USB power cable?
You have to change your wii to 480p using another cable before using the hyperkin
You know that's a great point, I always had mine connected via component video cable so I didn't even think that if it was set to 480i that it wouldn't work
It really was a defective cable, I had to move the cable around to get picture. Noble Gaming in Abq, NM refused to replace it due to a "sealed" product policy. My ebay wii2hdmi is working perfect and cost about $20 cheaper.
@@noelgutierrez1628 Sorry to hear that you had that issue :(
Good review though I have to say colours on the Hyperkin are clearly much closer to the RetroTink5x than the Wii2HDMI. Value wise the Wii2HDMI is nice but looking at footage I do think the Hyperkin looks better. Clearly none will look as good as the RetroTink5x but the RetroTink5x is much more expensive and advanced.
The Hyperkin and Wii2HDMI look like great solutions to me especially considering the cost.
I completely agree. Now the RetroTink is basically just doing 480P Passthru but delivering an HDMI Out for Component video, but I agree. Now I will say on my TV the Hyperkin Cable does look darker with the same settings than the Wii2HDMI, but in the capture, the raw footage, the Hyperkin isn't as dark.
@@RoXolid That's fair and the RetroTink5x is undoubtedly the best option for those who want the best and can afford it. I think both cheaper options are surprisingly good though, better than most of the plug and play HDMI cables.
Ah that's really interesting. I wonder what makes it so different on the TV compared to the raw footage? My only guess which could be completely wrong is did you use a different HDMI port for some of the cables (like for for RetroTink5x and one for Hyperkin and Wii2HDMI) as at least with my TV each HDMI port has its own settings for brightness etc.
you need to check out the mayflash wii2hd adapter
Email me a link and I will look into it
Kirby's Epic Yarn was great
Agreed!
Just bought one for a Wii Mini I hacked the region lock off of
Looking at Peach the Wii 2 HDMI adapter looks best 👌
I think the very first one I tested still looks the best, and it was under $10
@@RoXolid The Hyperkin cable?
@Chris Evans No, the first adapter I tested was this one:
czcams.com/video/-fUxHBQmuSQ/video.html
@RoXolid Productions Yeah, that's the one I said looked best. 🙂 Great videos though. Helped me make a decision on what to buy. I appreciate the communication as well 🙏
Wii sports actually. I loved bowling and tennis.
I played so much of both myself
Honestly the only issue I've run into with this product is the sound quality. Everything sounds muffled like something is covering my speakers. And I've tried multiple TV's messing with the audio settings. Any advice?
I didn't have that issue, sorry
As an Englishman, I’m intrigued as to what you meant by ‘English’ in the bowling!
The expression “putting English” on a ball is used in tennis, golf, soccer, bowling, and baseball and means you’ve spun and curved the ball to overcome a problem.
The expression comes from English snooker, a pool game where one of the main strategies is to block an opponent from having a straight line shot at a ball he must hit.
To do this, the shooter will create a spin on his shot to circumvent the obstruction.
This spin is called “putting English on it
@@RoXolid interesting! Yes, very accustomed to snooker and in fact, when you’ve blocked the opponent into a difficult shot, we say ‘snookered’ 😊
Well there you go
out of all the wii adapters you've reviewed which adds the least amount of input lag
test out the mayflash wii2hdmi
I will later this week
@@RoXolid so far that one is my favorite
The swell wii2hdmi is also really good but cost too much compared to the mayflash one
And reddit said the( protonic / don't remember the name but starts with a p)
Was the 2nd best but the one I have has audio crackling and other people said the same thing.
Kind of ironic that the highest quality of this video is 480p…
Are you talking about on CZcams? Because that is 1080p 60 frames per second.
@@RoXolid Yeah, maximum quality it’s allowing is 480p. Every other video I’m watching is 1080p so not sure why?
I don't know, I just double checked my settings and I absolutely have 1080p, 60fps as an option.
@@RoXolid just an update. It now appears in 1080p @ 60 FPS. I wonder if it takes a few hours for CZcams to render the higher resolution or something???
No, it was 1080p at the time of the premiere at 12:30 p.m. Central Time
if you only traded in just the gamecube , that doesn't really matter .
Wii Sports. For me, mostly Baseball and Bowling
Both great!
The problem with the Wii2HDMI is that it is a hit or miss and that's all up to luck. They're all made in China and are not branded, so you have no way to ensure quality control. You may buy one and it works perfectly, but you buy another and it doesn't work at all.
I don't disagree, mostly the same boards used throughout just with different shells.
I've unfortunately had this exact experience with Hyperkin products because even though you have a fancier branded box, the product still SEEMS like I'm getting chinese quality (Though that isn't always the biggest issue, 8bitdo make GREAT quality products in China).
I got a Ps2 hdmi that works PERFECTLY, and then two different Gamecube cables out of the box, one that would lose video signal if not bent in the appropriate direction, the second that had a LOUD buzz/hum while on, but perfect video.
Tatsunoko vs Capcom was mine.
Very cool
Most Wii cable comparison videos on CZcams don't even use the official, but rather the crappy Wii2HDMI adapter. It's not as if the official Wii component cable is expensive or too expensive.
There are also HD Retrovision Wii component cables that are around $30 and work great
@@RoXolid I read the PQ of those are more or less the same of Nintendo's component cable.
I do have their PS2 component cable.
@@PhilipMarcYT They're really good, I swear by them
The cable is just a component to HDMI conversion, which is really all one needs. By far the easiest way to play Gamecube games in 480p.
That's disappointing, however, because the GameCube did support s-video out of the analog output. This could have been so much better if that's the signal that it tapped into.
@RoXolid component is better than s-video. The component cables for the GC were super rare and expensive so the only way to play the games in Progressive scan mode was to play on the Wii with component cables. But now we have HDMI adapters to make it easier.
@Fools_Requiem I'm sorry I thought you said composite. That being said, I actually believe this cable does not tap into component, it only taps into composite.
With it only being 7 feet long if you needed more you would need a female to male hdmi cable to make it longer but that would be stupid you should get the wii to hdmi and a long hdmi cable to have a better chance if you have the console in an entertainment center.
Some TVs and other equipment don't play well with those gender changers like that, sometimes they cause HDCP Copy Protection issues.
there is also a very good HDMI adapter from Mayflash
It is usable, not sure it's all that great as I reviewed it and compared to others here:
czcams.com/video/oDlGFUdwt0Y/video.html
Not the experience I had with the Hyperkin cable sadly. Picture and sound came through but there was severe noise/artifacts. Screen would sometimes warp/glitch as well. I plugged it into the Wii U and had the same result to a lesser degree. Definitely feel ripped off tbh
Sorry to hear that, did you ever contact them for product support?
@@RoXolid I sure didn't! :) I've spent enough time mailing back things that didn't work lately. I don't want to have to win the hyperkin lottery to get a functional product. I'm probably just gonna try my luck with a component to hdmi converter instead..
How about running through an mclassic
I wanted to show just coming out of the unit. The mClassic adds about $100 to the cost, and if you're going to spend that much I'd say just get the Wii Component Cables and a RetroTink Multiformat, the results will be even better.
@@RoXolid excellent point.
biggest problem with wii-snes is you don't get a full frame rate on ntsc for widescreen which under ntsc value is 700x400 where pal value is 720x576 which is the default vale for wide screen tv's
Understand this there is not such as a digital signal on an analog tuner if you are connecting via RF please stop misusing digital symbol signal rates (rf) to composite/component/s-video/scart/hdmi av medium because you are using dtv standards to describe what is a wide screen standard in which we had back in the 90's if you had the cash to buy a widescreen analog tv
i've played around in console rf medium on most of the rf bases Tuned consoles prior av my console collection at the time
I'm 45 going on 46 and i'm sick of hd marketing slogans in and cable you buy today unless you a going from an actual chip you likely d-a chip in console and a-d chip in the cable to doo a connection to hdmi
the bidder issue today is whether or not you can push 1080 from a max cdrom standard of 720x400 (ntsc) let alone 4k
whilst dvd could technically do the resolution most of dvdroms used in consoles back then typically didn't 4k as a built in support mechanic back then
