  • The Nine'o'clock News with Peter Sissons, from Wednesday 16 April 1997. Reports:
    1) Robin Oakley on John Major's impassioned morning news conference and the party split over the single European currency. One Labour MP has also broken ranks.
    2) Jeremy Vine with Tony Blair, who is worrying that Conservative splits on Europe mean Labour's message is obscured. Includes Blair's 'Seven Pillars of a decent society' speech.
    3) Not in theory part of the election section, but the report on unemployment figures includes John Major and Lady Thatcher.
    In the second section:
    4) Anne Perkins' campaign desk, featuring Bill Morris of the TGWU campaigning in Bristol, reports of drug-taking on the Prime Minister's plane, Martin Bell's formal nomination as a candidate, Matthew Amroliwala with Paddy Ashdown and John Cleese, and the Scottish National Party with some dogs.
    5) Election briefing on transport policy from Richard Wilson.
    6) Peter Snow's latest opinion poll analysis. Note in particular from 31:48 a poll finding on British membership of the European Union.
    7) Robin Oakley's summary of the day.

2:05 - I know I am bing picky, but Peter Sissons in all of these 1997 election BBC News bulletins is the most awkward in the opening title sequence. He never times it right to look at the camera at the start. All he had to do was face the main camera and wait for the director in his ear piece to say "cue Peter". He just looks awkward here staring at the side monitor then moving quick to the main camera.

I wonder why they got rid of the famous BBC clock which always came on before the news? Channel 4 used to have one as well before C4 News.

I think that was ditched in the 2002 BBC One revamp when they introduced the dancer idents. Outdated maybe they thought, I always liked it.

Bringing back the Clock to introduce the News would be better than those awful oneness idents we have at the moment.

It’s because he forgot to term from camera 1 to camera 2 from his intro, camera 2 had the slide shown behind him after the titles, it was just a lapse of concentration.

If I remember correctly, during the 1997 election campaign, the opening wide shot of the presenter and desk was pre-recorded a few minutes before air and the rest of the bulletin was done in front of a blue chromakey screen.

Tony Blair promised a classless society. We'll I'd say he succeeded lol.

That was actually a John Major remark - appeared first in an interview with Today newspaper during the 1990 Conservative leadership contest ("In the next ten years we will have to continue to make changes which will make the whole of this country a genuinely classless society.")
