Thanks for having me guys... hope you enjoy the show and do come check out Numberphile if it sounds like your thing!
Numberphile I prefer the Unmade Podcast
Braaaaddddyyyy!!!!
Tested. Love this comment !
Have gone thrue most "Periodic Table" and "Numberphile" and wondered what was there story behind the obvious connection between them, so it was great to hear the story. Thanks and keep it comming.
Please film the outcome of Adam meeting Cliff. I can't even begin to imagine how awesome that will be. I follow all your channels and each one is brilliant in how at ease it puts you as a viewer. Like Adam I am not an expert in any of the fields discussed but I am always fascinated by them and not made to feel stupid for being able to keep up the the maths or chemistry or code or messier objects wtc
Numberphile is the reason I'm a math major today. Thanks Brady :)
That's great!
And I getting my chemistry phd, and it all started after watching Dr. Brady Periodic Videos
Same! Just declared it yesterday!
Man that's so cool!
Adam's reaction when he found out it was a Klein's bottle is the wholesomest of the wholesome reactions ever
Reactions like that are why I watch stuff Adam does. His excitement for things is infectious.
Excited Adam sounds a lot like Cliff himself!
O. M. G.
Cliff Stoll on this podcast would be completely mind bending.
And probably 4 hours long...
UnTiedMusicStudio
I’m not sure the Cave could withstand the level of excitement that’d result in.
When Adam barely talks during the whole podcast, you know the guest is FIRE! Brady Haran is amazing and probably the best science communicator on CZcams.
At least the hardest working one
Not to make this a competition, but Matt Parker is superior.
James Grime is for me, unparalleled enthusiasm along with Cliff Stoll.
Let's not forget Kyle Hill!
But Adam Savage was, for me, the original science communicator. For a while, I wanted to be a Mythbuster when I grew up.
Which is a massive twist given how Brady is usually the unseen. rarely heard interviewer.
I can feel my soul recharging when I see Adam get so obviously excited and yet stay quiet so he can listen well.
this is the best collaboration i never knew i needed
Brady never shared all of this on HI. At least never this in-depth. It's like a wonderful little bonus insight into his background.
That gift moment at the very end was the perfect note to end this fantastic conversation on.
Crazy that they never talked about the Apollo missions, that could be a whole second episode
next time, hopefully
Are they both fans? I had no idea
OMG you are the the ai guy from computerphile
And I thought Avengers was the greatest crossover ever made
Brady: **says anything**
Adam: :D
I love Brady and his tremendous work. It was Periodic Videos that got me hooked with chemistry and Sixty Symbols and Numberphile that made me love science in general. I found his channel during junior high, at a time where I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do, and was a huge influence on that aspect of my life. Now that I'm in university studying science, it's crazy to think that this person had such a huge impact on my decisions. I only hope he knows how important his work is and I wish I will one day meet him in person and have a chance to chat.
Comments like yours give me hope for the future.
I didnt know Brady is an OG Science CZcamsr. This man paved the way to so many science creators. Much gratitude sir.
A Cliff Stohl Klein Bottle get me choked up.
Good show.
Brady unwrapped the Klein bottle because he's seen how Adam unpacks things.
Hahahaha
Brady: "math" Adam: "maths" haha.
Adam on Objectivity when?
Yeah, I would have thought that Adam would be a fan of Objectivity.
Both are correct. Math describes ALL mathematical disciplines as grouped in a single set. Maths describes ALL mathematical disciplines as individual entities without being grouped in a set.
@@DomManInT1 I was making no assertions over which is correct, just noting that Brady is accomodating for how Adam, an American, would typically say it, while Adam is accomodating for how Brady, an Australian (living in Britain), would typically say it. If they both do that, then it's kind of a fruitless exercise, thus the "haha".
@@DomManInT1 Yes, both are correct, but they mean exactly the same thing. Both are abbreviations of "mathematics", it's just a matter of which English you're speaking.
@@95BWG Ah. A language purist. I am betting you would much prefer Latin. (P.S. Singulars do not mean plurals.)
11:00 OMG Mathematics as this giant field with different topics, rather than a monolithic block of facts, rings so true to me.
I was a Math Major in college, going down that straight road of algebra > geometry > calculus, and I was thoroughly lost by the 3rd semester of Calculus.
I talked to my Mentor and he said not every Math person has to know Calculus, and he had me take this survey of Mathematics class. Set theory, matrix math and others. I loved that class and spent the rest of my college career exploring those diverse areas.
This was my introduction to being a JOAT.
I’ve said this for a couple of years and I’ll say it again: Brady Haran is the greatest scientific communicator in human history. And it’s because he’s not the actual communicator, but the channel- the medium. Through him I’ve been introduced to the weirdest and most interesting concepts (and I’m in the sciences) along with the people dedicated to those very subjects.
Roberto Calzadilla
He does have that superpower of asking just the right question to get to the heart of what the scientist he’s interviewing is trying to get across.
I enjoy this from end to end. I have been watching Numberphile for a couple years now and same with tested. But I never new how bad I needed this podcast. Top marks all around.
I did not know that Brady Haran and Adam Savage being giant nerds at each other was a thing I needed but dang was it ever
I've seen so many explanations for "42" being the meaning of life. The most realistic answer I have seen is that in ASCII, 42 represents "*" which in computing denotes a wildcard. Therefore, the meaning of life is "everything"....
English: "Math"
Letter numbers by order in the English alphabet: 13; 1; 20; 8
13+1+20+8=42
That's where it originally comes from
wilkatis No it’s not. Douglas Adams just thought it was a funny number. Have a look at this Numberphile video where they talk about it:
czcams.com/video/D6tINlNluuY/video.html
Besides, Douglas Adams was English and would have said “maths”, not “math”.
What if we are in a nested simulation?
What if in fact we are in the 42nd nested simulation?
What if Hitchhiker's exists in every simulation, and "the answer" is the serial # of the simulation?
OMG geeking out. Would love a Smarter Everyday Episode here next. No Dumb Questions - Still Untitled Crossover.
This is a dream two of my favorite channels coming together and being able to watch you guys talk it is so great. Thanks for the video both of you.
Imagine Adam Savage being star struck by you. Awesome
I had a physics professor that was on the laser cooling project that ended up getting the Nobel prize for discovering the Bose-Einstein condensate (only 3 people get medals, there were like a dozen professors on the project). I can't claim anything impressive other than being in awe in their optics lab. I ended up switching from physics as my major after that year sadly...
...because I couldn't deal with all the math...
I remember that time when he made a video on an unsolved combinatorics problem, and someone just chucked the answer into the comments section. 🤣😁
Lol, really?
Which video?
Took me a bit to dig it up. I was part-way off track. It was on Matt's channel StandUpMaths, it referred to SuperPermutations, and the comment was on 4chan. :)
czcams.com/video/OZzIvl1tbPo/video.html
@@pmcgee003 You were right originally. I was watching the video you posted which is about the comment on 4chan. However, then someone also commented on that video with a new superpermutation that was even shorter and was previously undiscovered! They discuss it here: czcams.com/video/_tpNuulTeSQ/video.html
Wow, what a fantastic episode, and that ending! So heartwarming!
Now I'm looking forward to the episode of Hello Internet where Brady gives us the behind the scenes details of filming this.
"Are you crying over geometry?" I certainly do. On the regular. Thanks numberphile.
I've been fortunate to have a few twitter conversations with Matt Parker and James Grime. Matt's calculator unboxing videos are GENIUS.
Thank you brady for all the time you've put into spreading such a lot of fantastic content!
Don't forget that researchers are already communicators: having your data and conclusions is one half of the job, the other half of the job is writing about it and explaining it to others.
It is one thing to communicate it to the scientific community.
It think it is even more important to explain it to lay people. Especially to children so they may become interested and excited in the concepts perhaps choosing to become the next generation to carry on the discoveries
"A math institute helps out" he says.
That, America, is what modesty looks like.
Awesome to learn about the origins of some of my favourite channels on YT.
I am always amazed by the wonderful people Brady finds to make videos with, and the topics just add to my pile of things I want to learn about some day.
Also, Adams reaction to the gift was priceless. Given his adoration for objects, Adam seems like he would enjoy watching Objectivity at least as much as Numberphile. Strange they didn’t mention the channel.
I follow every one of Brady's CZcams channels. He and all the scientists and mathematicians he works with are amazing. Everything from periodic videos to deepskyvideos (who put out a new video today) to numberphile are amazingly artistic in their projection of these things that the every day person forgets about or doesn't find interesting. Brady has shown us a whole world that the average person doesn't get to experience. It's beautiful.
Brady's shown me the beauty of maths and physics, and that dramatically changed my worldview, and I'm incredibly thankful for Brady's work. He's a great chap.
I don't get to watch/listen to every episode of Still Untitled, but I watched this one! Excellent chat, folks! Really great stuff.
Out of nowhere, or at least on the heels of an AT-AT model build, CZcams served me up this gem which I hadn't seen. Thanks everyone!
Adam Savage and Brady Haran together?! What a joy. I'm hoping there's also a video of Brady getting to explore The Cave. It was wonderful to hear the whole history of Brady's channels.
This podcast was awesome!!!!!! thanks for making it!
The ending of this video was one of the most beautiful things ever !!
Huge fan of Numberphile and several of Brady’s other works, for all the reasons you said and more. Numberphile is one of the CZcams channels I don’t stop my kids from watching, when they’re supposed to be doing homework...
Dr. Haran is the goods! So glad to see this mix of my favorites. Cannot describe how happy it made me when I discovered that Adam was a Numberphile fan. Next up needs to be Dr. James Grime.
Peg Y
Are you sure that’s safe?
Great story from Brady. This podcast put a smile on my face, thanks guys!
When Computerphile isn't mentioned. :(
There's was a theology and a ...tree one, too? Both very watchable, actually
@@6reve Don't think they mentioned Sixty Symbols either.
@@madspacepig They did.
@@VAXHeadroom Nevermind then.
From what I understand Brady is not really that involved in computerphile
This guy is incredible ?!! thanks for all hard work .
Ok. Adam Savage meets Brady. That's two CZcams worlds colliding in the best possible way. The thought of Adam and Cliff colliding could make my brain collapse into a black hole. That video would win CZcams
this was fantastic. thank you for sharing
You know, I haven’t been following Brady since Hello Internet stopped. I missed his enthusiasm ❤️
Watched it to the end now. This was absolutely delightful.
Cried a bit a numerous points during this video. Beautiful.
I love the fact that Brady uses Math, and Adam uses Maths :D
You MUST make a video with Cliff Stoll, I love that guy.
Search YT for "brady cliff stoll", he has at least a dozen videos featuring Cliff.
Imagine the value of that brown paper on Brady's wall... Also, the Klein's bottle. So many priceless things. Awesome! I really admire your contributions to science education, guys!
This is fantastic!! Two of my favorite people!
Amazing stories. Also a combo I'd never expect: Savage/Brady? Also: now I suddenly have 3 more channels to watch!
Norm is like Chewbacca. He never gets the gifts.
This was a genuinely beautiful interview. One of the top comments on the video says Brady is one of the best science communicators on youtube but while I agree, I think its a bit reductive. Brady is amazing not because he is a communicator, but rather because he fascilitates communication. He is the audience surrogate in the room and I genuinely don't know if anyone is as good at that as Brady is.
I. Loved. This. So much! This was delightful.
Inadvertent humble brag from Adam countering Brady's 5.5 thousand years viewing time, with mythbusters coming in @ a million years, it was like Brady had a glass head as I watched his thought process, "well that's because you were on TV for 14 years, cobber 🤪"
Everything Brady does is awesome I watch anything with his name on it.
Grady from Numberphile is awed by Adam savage - Adam savage is awed by Grady of Numberphile ...
They both say how humble and unimportant they are, and how little they have done, whilst showing how much they have done ... thus the perfect video was made
that kline bottle reaction was priceless. I even got excited about it myself :) perfection
This was so delightful!
So nice to hear an Aussie accent in the cave...cheers from DownUnder guys!!!
I've become a massive Adam Savage Tested fan from watching the one day builds.
Sixty Symbols is my favorite CZcams channel. I hope we see more of it. Those physicists are inspirations to me, as a designer and creator who has no business doing theoretical physics.
3blue1brown.... PBS Space Time... SFIA... Vsauce... Sciencephile the AI... minutephysics... the list is rather long lol
@@coopergates9680, Sadlt Sciencephile the AI's retired. :(
Marvel: We have the most ambitious crossover in a genera.......
Adam&Brady: You what now?
just another Tim, checking in... (was hoping for a bit on the parker square, but I can't complain as this was a delightful conversation)
I never thought I’d find I have anything in common with Adam Savage. He’s just this delightful, different being. But I, too, have that spatial awareness where I can look at an object and know if it will fit in a space. It’s a very handy talent.
this was a joy to watch
AWESOME. Crossover of two of my favourite podcast crews (minus CGPgrey).
Awesome! This was really helpful and inspiring!
I too have probably watched 100 hours of Brady's videos. But until now I didn't have any sense of Brady-as-a-person. What a great conversation to get to be a fly-on-the-wall for!
You should really check out his podcast "Hello Internet" with CGP Grey, and/or "The Unmade Podcast".
43:14 I almost cried. I'd probably cry too if I got a Klein bottle from Cliff!
Great guest! Very good dialogue.
Hi Brady :D
-Tim
Hi Tim, I'm Tim too
Hi Tim watching this on an aeroplane
Crossover!! 2 of my favourite creators!!
"Oh this old thing? No big deal, just the COLDEST PLACE IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE, MUCH COLDER THAN THE DEEPEST INTERGALACTIC VOID. You know just a cute lil side experiment running in the background while I focus on my other work."
I love what Brady makes.
Numberphile either is going to or already has inspired a new generation of mathematicians. I thought math was sort of cool after calc but Numberphile really made me love and appreciate it.
Cliff Stoll and Adam Savage have very similar energy. I would love to see them together.
Small convention of Geniuses before creating a Time machine
awesome just what i needed today
Brady is awesome - thanks.
I love Brady's content. it is the best.
Great talk! Loved the story about the laser device.
Wonder if Adam has met Brady's numberphile collaborator, Cliff Stoll ? That would be a Talking Room
Someone didn't watch to the end.
Best episode ever !!
Only 100 hours Adam? Brady has other channels that can help you get that number up ;-) Glad to hear the wife reaction to constantly hearing “that Brady guy” in the background is somewhat universal 😂
the greatest crossover of all time
This really should have been twice as long, at least, Brady is great
Brady is an OG youtuber, hands down.
As a videographer/teacher I found this fascinating: 32:39 and 38:39
Adam's delight at the gift damnear gave me feels
That was terrific.
My introduction to Grahams number was a day[9] video that turned out to be a 15 minute setup for a "yo mama" joke... 15 minutes well spent.
Adam: "I only understand about a third of what's going on in each video."
Me: Oh good! I don't feel so bad anymore. Phew!
Brady was in the coolest place in the universe
The part about the coldest part of the universe being on Earth made me feel warm and fuzzy. Cool facts. Science can be so cold.
