OMG! FUN FACT: In the 60's when I was growing up, there was a kid's cartoon on tv called The Archies. The Archies were a fictional band with a Saturday morning animated show and a comic book series. "Sugar Sugar" hit #1 in 1969. You could get a thin plastic copy of the song on the back of a box of Alpha Bits cereal. A year later Wilson Picket charted with his version of "Sugar Sugar".

My brother is autistic and one year older than me. We danced to this hundreds of times! 1971 & all through our childhood. Our first dance, I was 5 yrs and he was 6 yrs. I remember this like yesterday! We held hands and shoulders and we rocked back and forth in a slow dance style turning in a circle! The adults would play this over and over to watch and exclaim over the cuteness. I didn't mind because it was the only time that my brother danced! I was honored to be his partner!

After Don Kirsher was done with the Monkees, being they wanted to run the show, do their own songs etc, and the Monkees then lost their mojo. Kirsher created the Archies. Well the Band the Archies. Again Wrecking Crew studio musicians, Same Writers, and studio vocalists. So he got more hits with this cartoon band, with out the complaining. Here Ron Dante is shown singing. But this song was introduced to the public in a Saturday Morning cartoon by the cartoon characters. P.S. The girl in the song is Toni Wine not in this video.

"Sugar Sugar" was in fact the very song that caused the Monkees to fire Kirshner. And Kirshner was right that it was a hit song, but the Monkees (Mike Nesmith especially) wanted musical control and didn't want to keep recording bubblegum pop.

@@Fool3SufferingFools That is all true. For Mike Nesmith, as far as songwriting, His biggest song was was recorded by another artist. Stone Ponies - Featuring Linda Ronstandt. Launched her career. If you know of any other song he wrote that was a hit, I am not aware. Monkees left Kiersher and the rest is history. Kirsher had other artists and projects. Monkees are mostly remebered for all the songs they produced with Kirsher. Not much on their own.

The woman was Toni Vine who voiced both Betty and Veronica of The Archies. She went on to write a huge hit for Tony Orlando called "Candida." The song was co-written by Andy Kim who went on to have a big hit of his own in 1974 called "Rock Me Gently.' And the TV cartoon and band were created by Don Kirschner using "The Monkees' TV show from a few years earlier. Before this song, The Archies put out a single only reaching #53 on the charts. So Kirschner - believing so strongly in Sugar Sugar - thought audiences would unfairly compare it with Feels So Good - the previous song. So, they went around to radio stations across the country, had DJs play the song from a record with no band name listed to see if they would air it. They loved it and did - being told to tell listeners it was by a "mystery group." Once phone lines lit up and people started wondering where they could purchase the record - it was finally re-released about two months later identifying the band as "The Archies."

Sugar Sugar was written by Andy Kim from Montreal and Jeff Barry from NYC. It became the title track for the Archies, a fictional cartoon group. The Archies was both a cartoon and a comic strip.

If you haven't found out yet, this was the studio version. I don't remember ever seeing this video before but you can see Ron Dante singing, playing the drums, guitar and tambourine all at the same time (but he really only did the vocals on this record) and there's a female singer (Toni Wine) not there, so it is not a live performance. I never thought of The Archies as a one-hit wonder. Three of their other singles made the Top 40 (in the US): "Jingle, Jangle"(reached number 10), "Bang-Shang-A-Lang"(number 22) and "Who's Your Baby?"(number 40) and I loved many other Archies songs (and still do). "Sugar, Sugar" may have been the biggest bubble-gum song of all time and I believe it was the number one song on the Billboard chart for the year 1969. "Get On the Line" is one of their best songs IMHO and should have been released as a single.

Veronica says "I can make life so sweet". I also remember cutting the record off the back of a "Sugar Crisp" box, putting in on the turntable and listening to this song. Wish I had kept that record. Life was so simple when I was a kid.

ron dante is the lead singer in this group and he wrote quite a few jingles for popular commercials in the 60's. i saw him perform at the calvin theater in northampton, mass. in 2018 on the 'happy together tour'. also in that show were the turtles, the cowsills, the association, mark lindsay of paul revere and the raiders and chuck negron of three dog nite. it was a spectacular 60's oldies revue. great night.

This made History in the sense that they don't "Exist". They had other hits like Jingle Jangle. This was written by Jeff Barry who is probably best known for Writing and Co-Writing Hits for The Ronettes (that you heard) Be My Baby, The Dixie Cups, Chapel Of Love, and The Crystals Da Doo Run Run. He Also Co Wrote River Deep Mountain High for Ike & Tina Turner. The Other Man who wrote this is Andy Kim (Not Gibb). It was called the Best In Bubblegum Pop.

Reminds me, every time I hear it of sitting on the curb with the neighbors across the street listening to kezy a popular radio station at the time. We waited for that song to come on, then we'd all jump up and start dancing all over the curb and street.

  • @thelawofficesofdeweycheatu7166

The lead singer was Ron Dante. He had a minor hit as a member of the group The Detergents doing Leader of the Laundromat (A parody of the song Leader of the Pack). He also sang lead for a group called The Cufflinks with the song Tracy.

Hahaha the other guys you saw in the band”band” was the singer 😊. Yes, this guy and a gal, I do not know her name, sessions singer...anyway, the first time i saw this was a young kid during The Archie’s show. They were high school kids- 3 boys, 2 girls. Archie, Veronica, Jughead...can’t think of the rest.
Heard this song the first time on that show when they had The Archie’s playing it. It’s hard not to love.
