Build Me Up Buttercup was a 1968 monster hit. The lead singer here is one of the four Black members of this interracial band that also had three White members. They were an anomaly back in the 60's. I cannot believe it's been 54 years ago when I first heard this song as a 14-year-old teen. Now that I am 68 years old, and a senior citizen. The song still rocks me to my core... Great post and reaction.
I have the 45 , youngster .
And we're still cool.
Colin Young is the lead singer here. This song was written by Foundations piano player, Mike D'Abo (former lead singer for Manfred Mann....you heard him on "Mighty Quinn") and longtime hitmaker Tony Macaulay. Macaulay wrote, among others, songs like "(Last Night) I Didn't Get to Sleep at All" by the 5th Dimension, and David Soul's "Don't Give Up on Us," both which he wrote on his own.
Macaulay collaborations include "Sorry Suzanne" by The Hollies and "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" by Edison Lighthouse. He's still around at 76, as is D'Abo at the same age!
Another senior citizen who's still rockin' along to this song! It makes me happy every time I hear it.
61 years old, and still love this song!!!
Geez, this brings back memories, I still remember all the words. Which is ironic, because I can’t remember what I did yesterday... 🤔🤔🤔💖💖💖
On the same page 😂
Lol
Lesley Debelloy IKR? I walk into a room and think to myself, What did I come in here for??? 😂😂🤔🤔
Forgot what I was gonna write.... Oh, yeah..... Me too. 🤣🤣🤣
That's the great thing to long term memory vs short term. With a simple trigger your brain unlocks that memory and it all comes back to you in an instant! Amazing power of the brain.
Another classic music from the past
This was British guys trying to capture the Motown sound and they did a decent job.
It was Northern Soul..:)
Lynn Hamps Yes but Northern Soul was a retro movement which came later and was not dedicated to a particular label.😀
czcams.com/video/idofu8fbaQo/video.html
Wrong
Oh damn! I had no these guy were English! Loved this song for years. I’m from England by the way 😂
Another good classic is Band of Gold from Freda Payne
💟💟💟 yes. Good suggesting.
YES!!!
One of my favorites!
One of my 45s!
My favourite tune.
You'll like their other song too! "Baby Now That I've Found You"
Expressway To Your Heart - Soul Survivors
How about the one hit wonder “take a letter Maria”
By my late friend R.B. Greaves, who passed away several years of cancer caused by Agent Orange he was exposed to in VietNam. He was a great singer and an even greater human being.
@Gary Dodgson , No, he was born overseas in an army hospital and raised on an Indian reservation here in the States. I met him in the mid-70's in Hollywood when he was a neighbor and friend of one of my best friends. He and his wife at the time owned a recording studio in Hollywood in the late 70's through the 80's called Dhu-Ron Studios. She was Maura Dhu Albertson, daughter of actor Jack Albertson. He later moved to New Mexico with his 3rd wife. That's the last time I saw him, about 2 years before he died. BTW, Sam Cooke was his uncle.
Strongly suggest the Foundations "Baby Now that I've Found You."
Please do The Foundations, "Baby Now That I've Found You" ❤️
Great song. I still have the 45 single. It was one of my brothers' records but he left it with me after he moved out when I was a kid.
That's my favorite of the two.
This is one of those songs that I don't recall specifically when I first heard, it's just always been there.
What a bank full of memories this song brings up. This was popular when I was 10 or 11 years old. We had a local radio station (WOTT AM radio...FM wasn't around yet) that played this song. My father had a reel to reel tape recorder that weighed a ton... well it felt that heavy to a young girl of 10 or 11. I had recorded a couple of hours of music from the station and this song was on it. One of my friends that lived about a mile from my house was having a pajama party so I carried that tape recorder to her house... I was pooped, I tell ya. But what a dance party we had. Thanks for your reaction, Jay.... Take care and be well. Peace.
cnatview great story, thanks for sharing. We used to record music off the radio too.
cnatview You mentioned pajama parties, had many of those when I was in high school, playing the radio listening to the songs, dancing in the living room with all my friends! My mother closing her bedroom door cause we were having such a good time! Great times last forever in our minds
@@blackprix Indeed....
This was my pajama party? Wow, I dont remember. But it's very cool nonetheless. Thanks C.
@@leelavanchard574 Yes, your pajama party. lol
This song was one of my favorites. Also, "The Letter" by the Box Tops.
Yep , I still love the original but I have to admit Joe Cocker’s rendition did justice to the song.
@@tinypurplefishesrunlaughin8052 Joe Cocker makes any song better. I forgot that he did a version of The Letter!
Yassss!
This song is on the film There's Something about Mary, I used to just know it as a singalong song, but now it always makes me think of that film. (If you haven't seen it - I thoroughly recommend it, it's funny as hell 👌🏻)
I knew of this song way before Something About Mary but whenever I hear it, that is the first thing that comes to mind. Loved that flick! FRanks and Beans!!
Same! That movie really brought it back to how great it was
And as luck would have it, "There's Something About Mary" will be rebroadcast today, Sunday January 3, 2021 at 3:40PM East Coast U.S. Time on the cable TV/streaming channel called "Freeform" (formerly known as "ABC Family" before 2016). Definitely worth checking out for the laughs and the nostalgic theme of the movie itself as it has "aged" very well in its own right, and doesn't at all seem like the movie was made over 20 years ago, because the movie was so well done.
Great song gets the dance floored filled when played
The sound ya hear was an era of bands like “The Grass Roots” “The Rascals” The Association” The Turtles,” etc. etc.
Sitting on the dock of the bay..
1968 Otis Redding
You need to do Peter and Gordon, songs are "I Go To Pieces", "A World Without Love" or for a change, "Lady Godiva"
I agree, diane.
Oh yes please, they had wonderful voices
A World Without Love, P L E A S E !!
Always one of my favorite songs! :)

THE LETTER by the Box Tops!
If that a cover of the Joe Cocker song or a completely different song?
@@kerryn6714 The Box Tops did it first. But they are the same song/
@@chrismulwee4911
Thanks ✌
Excellent tune ! Thanks for doing this one J!
Here's another one hit wonder O C Smith Little green apples its a real sweet love song.
This is what we called bubblegum music... but it was fun music & made you happy.
It's also well worth doing Baby Now That I've Found You, that is pictured.
I am 63 and this song takes me back to the skating rink in Jr High Skate Nights, every time I hear it! Trying to get up the nerve to ask a girl to skate during "couples skate"! It involved holding hands you know! Lol
I always associate the skating rink with The Bee Gees!
I remember listening to this on my transistor radio under my pillow, showing my age💯💫💯❣️🤣🤣👩🏼🦳
You might enjoy “Double Shot of My Baby’s Love” by the Swingin’ Medallions.
The lead singer is Clem Curtis i met him a few years ago when he was singing on the cruise ships, a really nice guy, i think he was 72 at the time and still had a fantastic voice, sadly he died in 2017
I knew you’d love this song. Thank you for reacting to this. You reacted exactly like I did every time I heard it on car rides on my parents 70s music CDs 💿 ❤️
Makes me want to dance.
The soundtrack to the movie "There's Something About Mary" a true classic
I genuinely can't hear this song and not think of that movie!
A pile of garbage!
The movie is the last thing I think of when I hear this classic.
@@neatdesign I had a huge crush on a girl named Pam when this movie came out.
@@nickjames3049 no its good
How about "A little bit of soul" by the Music Explosion. One hit wonder really great music!
In England they always play this at Christmas Parties, Birthday parties suppose every organised parties. 😂
Still?
@@arunkhanna2990 what you mean still? It’s an old favourite. It’s timeless!
@@softshallow7435 it’s a great song. I just wish that we would play more old music over here. It’s like kryptonite to young people if you play it nowadays.🥲
Such a fun, positive song. "Double-Barreled One-Hit Wonders"?
A suggestion: while the whole album is amazing, it's the only album by David + David, "Boomtown". The one hit was the title track. If you dig it, I highly recommend the last track, "Heroes" as well. It's a little jewel in my box of music.
Thank You!!! ❤️ this song!!!
I remember hearing this as a kid. It was upbeat for a song about betrayal but catchy and pop R&B.
You’ve got the best reaction videos on CZcams!
Thank you
That was a popular song back in the 1960s!! It was very nice hearing it again. Nice review!
British party anthem if ever I've heard one! 😁
I LOVED the guy that went down the LA freeway blaring this song, and other drivers joined in! Takes me back to junior high!
Whenever I hear this song, I always think of the end of the film 'there's something about Mary' and them lip-syncing to this song. I love this song sm. So upbeat.
This is a classic, Jayvee!
Shout out to the brilliant Buttercup diner in Oakland CA that we visited when we travelled from Australia in 2017. This song was in our heads the whole time.
Wonderful "feel good" song. Gets you moving!
Omg my music, I was so blessed to be born in 1960 and in my teen years the best music of all time the 70's. That was the best time for music, everyone walked around with the portable 8 tracks, everyone knew everyone, no fighting, pool halls with pinball, pac-man and you didn't have to worry about danger at every corner awesome
There have been a lot of bands over the years with multiple vocalists, where every member would take turns on lead vocals. The Beatles, Beach Boys, Monkees and Eagles come to mind immediately.
Always loved this fun song!!
Something about Mary ost...this one.... absolute iconic track
One of the founders of this band was Arthur Brown. Clearly a visionary, Brown arguably invented the performance of heavy metal. Check out his song "Fire;" the feeling of drugs w/ no after-effect. Trippy stuff.
Great memorys from this song when I was 5. 52 years later still love it. Its in your soul. 🤗🤗
I was the closing cook at pizza hut for years and every single night I closed I would put this on the jukebox and crank it while I cleaned up. Good memories.
WOW! Great memories. When we were at Sweet 16 parties this is the song where all the girls got into a circle , danced and sang our hearts out! Love it! Thanx J!!!
Oh I love this song. Great songs to sing to 💗
Fun song thanks jayvee✌
Brilliant Jayvee, you are having so much fun reacting to the decades of fantastic music, and we are having fun too. This is one of those songs that keeps popping into my head lol, I can't sing and even hum in tune but I enjoy it - except when I'm trying to sleep lol. God bless you all, love hugs and peace Mary-Ellen UK
This is my go to Karaoke song! They featured this in the movie There's Something About Mary. It's a really fun video. Try to watch it.
When I hear this song I think of my high school years, which were the best of times! We went to dances and we enjoyed music. Thanks for the memories😊👏😀
DAVE Clark 5 "Because" is a beautiful song, "Cant You See That She's Mine", "Glad All over" or "Catch Us If You Can"
Yes! To all! 👍👍💜💖
My brother went to school with Dave Clark.
Bits and pieces also
I’d say anything from the DC5 is not worth listening to. Cheap nonsense by comparison.
This song has lasted the tested the time 60 years.. whole stadiums has sung this song. Love it 😊
Also an one hit wonder 'Aquarius/let the sunshine in' by the 5th dimension. Many Greetings and a wonderful Weekend
from Cologne, Germany
I’d love to see Fifth Dimension on the channel. I practically wore out the vinyl replaying Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In over and over.
Another great song, kinda in this lane is "Go All the Way " by The Raspberries. I promise you will digggit!
Motown, The British Invasion bands and The American great artists, made the 65-75's a golden era for music...It still "Lives on" thanks to channels like yours.
Just singing my head off..I love this tune ..I seem to be saying that to all the tunes you put up. My kind of music though, wide range. All good thank you.
Pure 60’s British pop. Great for us early teens in the late 60’s. Tells about the trails of young relationships. Great song
Here are a couple 70s one hit wonders to consider for a reaction.
Daddy Dew Drop - Chick-a-Boom which reached #5 on the Cash Box Top 100 and The Tea Set - Ma Belle Amie which reached #5 on the Billboard Top 100.
If you want to hear a 70s doom and gloom one tit wonder song about a plane crash check out D.O.A. by Bloodrock. The song was banned on many radio stations but still reached #36 in the Billboard Top 100.
That's for all the reactions you do
Kind of a drag by the Buckinghams
One of my favorite groups the Buckinghams, “kind of a drag”
Mercy Mercy Mercy
I’ve loved this song since I was 12. I still crank the radio up when I’m driving. Love it.
This song was "Resurrected" for the hit movie: "There's Something About Mary" Definite Classic!
Classic. Songs back then had meaning. simple Lyrics . Bring back the times.
Always a heel-tapping, finger-snapping, sing-along song every time I hear it!
You need to do some songs from The Association... My favorite is Everything That Touches You but they have several that are really good... Also, The Rain, The Park and Other Things by Cowsills... They were a family group that inspired The Partridge Family TV show...
This is a teenie bopper, bubblegum song we played at sock hops. A sock hop is when you got a gym and record player for the night and everybody in junior high took their shoes off and danced in their stocking feet.
This is an ultimate feel good song!! Guaranteed to have you dancing and trying to sing along!!
My dad used to sing this song with his friends on the streets of Brooklyn when he was young. Great song.
Love this song still to this day...soooo fun !!!!! Woooweee !!! Great Days, what wonderful memories they gave our lives !!! I can remember my heart flutter for my first cutie crazy crush, i thought was gonna be my big forever !!! Remember that one ? They sang me right through those days ! 😃🙄💖 That sound was exactly, how i felt ! Happy kookoo love ..haha ! And my sweet mother was in the house with us too, what a blessing. That's what this song brought back just now. I cannot thank you enough, nor them !!!
Love this song brings back the memories. Great reaction! Thanks for the memories!
Takes me back to my younger days! First time I heard this I was on vacation with my family in Virginia Beach!! ♥️
I know this song from There’s Something About Mary
Me too! so fun!! 👍🙂
Love this song. Check out “More Today Than Yesterday” by Spiral Staircase, another great catchy 60’s hit.
Brings back great memories of watching the Northern Soul boys sprinkling their talc on the floor and dancing up a storm...happy days.. :) (and so long ago sadly)
This was my favorite song when I was in about the seventh grade. LOL Just hearing this song makes you happy. Don’t break his heart, buttercup!
One of my favourite songs of all time. Bought it when it first came out on a 45. Now there’s showing my age lol. Love your reaction to this, I still feel like that whenever I hear it.
Yay! One of my Favorites! Thank you! From the Great State of Oklahoma, USA!
A golden oldie!
It is nice to see a young person like this music. I wish it would make a come-back.
i have always loved this song! its great to hear it many decades later
I just love your willingness to listen to nearly anything and everything !!!!!!!!!
Always loved this song
This was a big tune when I was a 15 year old boy and discovering the "joys" of dancing with girls..... Great memories of this time....long time ago now.. sad to say.
I....... all all all all all all..... waaaaay way way way ways.... luv luv luv luv luv luv...... THAT.... sooooooong! Hahaha... Always loved that song! No need 4u2 explain why u run YOUR channel the way u do, for we can't run it any better. YOU DO A GREAT JOB, Jay. You give a little something, for everyone.
I love your reactions to the music more than anything! You're a sweetie.
Really love this incredible song! The movie, Something About Mary, featured this fun song, and is a terrific comedy!!
This song was written by Mike D'abo, the second lead singer of Manfred Mann.
Their other big hits include 'Baby,Now That I've Found You' and 'In Those Bad,Sad Old Days'(I think that's the title).
Also, check out their live version of 'S.O.S'
famous by Edwin Starr.
Great backing and vocal👍
Yes! I was hoping someone would suggest this one!
Great rhythm, dance forever to this.
Excellent song. They have great rythym n harmonies. I love this group. Very nice react J. Do more of them ok?!!
I woke up with this song in my head this morning I adore this song
All I see are the credits at the end of "There's Something about Mary". Classic feel good song! :-)
If you're looking for "one hit wonders" from the late 60's that will blow you away, check out The Spiral Staircase "More Today Than Yesterday" -- the verses really swing and the chorus will stick in your head and leave you wondering how he could hit such high notes.
I’ve always loved this one and Just Walk Away Renee by the Left Banke .
