He called the recording studio at 3am and asked if he could come in and record something.. he went in and did this in one take, took his copy and left.. this version actually wasn’t released on an album until 5 years later.. I love that story.. he had a song he needed to sing that night not for money or glory just for the love of the music

I used to think only Judy Garland could sing this song.. everyone else that tried, just couldn’t pull it off.. until I heard this version. Iz’ version is so beautiful.

@@Roy-wg1yk No, he didn't write it. This is a cover. Judy Garland sang it first in Wizard of Oz in 1939. Israel was not even born until 1959. For the record, the song was written by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg.

Yeah judy had a great voice of course, but what I love about his voice and version of this song is the spirituality to it. His voice just brings this and how it;s sung, it's so beautiful but soft and smooth. And the ukulele, I don't know it just brings this spiritual aspect to it. Like I could see this song being played in celebrating someones life after they pass, not because the people in his community celebrated the singer's life and honor. But I don't know a song where it just makes you look up at the clouds and think of your family lost and afterlife and hope all things well work out.

Yep, Judy’s version is one of the best recordings of a song EVER. So we shouldn’t compare to her... but this is pretty darn beautiful in its own right. He has made it his own. I have both versions on the same playlist that I often listen to in my car.

This is by far the most beautiful version of Over the Rainbow that I've ever heard. Israel's youtube video has nearly a billion views, and over the years I've contributed to many of those views. It always lifts my soul. God rest his soul. He was only 38 when he died and had a wife and daughter. Died too soon. You can tell by the funeral/celebration of life that he was dearly loved.

@@dichter331 "Poly-nesia" actually means "many islands" so it's not the indigenous appellation for our people and our region. The Europeans who charted the map of the Pacific ocean in the 18th century gave this appellation to our region. "Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia" to give it some order I guess.
"Hawaiiki Nui" is the island of origin of all the ancient gods and the souls of the polynesian people when they die.
According to our cosmogony, "Hawaiiki" was the center of everything. The islands of "Hawaii" as we know it now is just the modern twist to it.

Hundreds of people were wading in the water and hundreds more were on land. A procession of big rigs blew and held their horns echoing through the valley while his ashes were placed into the ocean making it sound as if the State of Hawaii was crying . . . it's a moment I will never forget. This is from The Wizard of Oz movie. Judy Garland is the original singer of this song, and the musical was one of Hollywood's most epic movies, from 1939. My family used to watch it every year, when they would repeat it on t.v. This is an amzing rendition! They both did justice to this ballad.

Judy Garland made this song famous in the movie, "Wizard of Oz." But Iz's voice has such a haunting beauty that touches your soul. They used this song in the movie, "50 First Dates", starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. That is his wife and daughter spreading his ashes. As you can see he was well loved by the people of Hawaii... and by ME too. 💖💖💖

Many years ago, my girlfriend and I went to Hawaii on vacation, and got engaged there. We stayed at a cozy little cottage on the Big Island, and one of Iz's albums was left in the cottage. Really loved his take on the song, maybe especially because of connection to that very special vacation with the woman who became my wife.

I heard his cover version some yrs back & became an instant fan, just to see that he's no longer w/us. My heart was broke, as if I listened to him for yrs. His version is actually a combo song; 2nd part is "What A Wondeful World", that intertwines beautifully w/Somewhere Over The Rainbow. U listened to the short version. The combo version is much better.

@JayveeTV In 1988 the late Israel Kamakawiwo'ole called a sound studio at 3am and asked if he could come record, because he had an idea. He was so polite the studio owner saod yes even though it ws too late. 15 minutes later he showed up, sang and played his ukelele and recorded " Over The Rainbow" in just ONE take
(Taken from Facebook fact page find) 👍🏻

I love this song, both his version as well as the all-time Judy Garland classic. I think both have a haunting quality, this hope and desire for a happiness that has been just out of reach. Many of us have felt this way during life, so this song is so real and relatable. And in expressing those feelings and bonding with others who often feel likewise... I think we can get just a little closer to that elusive happiness. Loving and knowing we too are accepted and loved for who we are makes all the difference as we navigate down life’s pathways.
