IZ is an inspiration and was loved by all. I was at Makua when they spread his ashes from the Hokule'a. Cars stopped along the 2 lane road leading to Ka'ena bringing traffic to a stand-still. Hundreds of people were wading in the water and hundreds more were on land. A procession of big rigs blew and held their horns echoing through the valley while his ashes were placed into the ocean making it sound as if the State of Hawaii was crying . . . it's a moment I will never forget. An incredible celebration of life for an incredible man!!

So I’ve heard he called the studio at like 3 in the morning and says he wants to record something. One take is all it took to record this song. In and out in 15 mins

Yup that's basically what happened. They did an interview about it with the person who ran the recording studio. He came in, sat down and did it right there in one take. You can watch that part in his documentary here on CZcams.

That's natural. It's a song about looking forward to the peace that comes with death. This was the first singer I've ever seen actually get the vibe right.

I liked the original version of the song sung by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz in 1939, but this one has continuously blown me away. When I see the video I feel momentary sadness, but hen I imagine that he is now over the rainbow himself and singing with the angels.

He had a hard life growing up and singing was how he coped
When I was stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in 2002, this song would be played everywhere and God forbid you say something negative about Bruddah IZ around the locals because you could get your ass kicked by a group of pissed off Samoans. He was like a national treasure over there. He died the same year I graduated from high school.
Idk if you still reacting but if you really liked this I strongly recommend “Hawaii 78” by him. It talks about the injustices we Hawaiian have been burdened by the modern colonization of our home, and I hope you enjoy it. It brings me to tears anytime I hear the first note!
