  • A short video showing another staple GBHA Goalie Skills drill: the 'Short Pull' Drill. The shooter sets up a puck a short distance (usually 1 or 2 feet) from the goalie, and places the tip of his stick blade directly behind the puck; then, he quickly pulls the puck to one side and immediately snaps a shot off. The goalie must transition from a shot-ready stance to a butterfly slide, covering the change in the shooting angle.
This is a terrific drill for both focussed technical work (namely butterfly transitions) and for game-ready preparation. A short pull like this to change the shooting angle in close to the goal is one of the most dangerous plays a shooter can make.
Notice that the pace between shots is relatively slow: as usual in NHL drills, the point is to do is smoothly and consistently with power, rather than flailing through as many repetitions as possible. Give the goalie plenty of time to set up in a shot-ready stance before the next pull and shot.
For beginner goalies (and those who have issues with stick discipline and sealing the ice), the shot can simply be swept along the ice; here, Marcoux is elevating the puck to force Kiprusoff to deal with the vertical angle as well.
