DIY $60 Side Skirts! Including Paint!

  • This is a how to on my color matched side skirts I made at home for only $60!
    I looked for some diy body kit style side skirts for my RX7 for a while and finally stumbled upon someone using a PVC rain gutter. There skirts looked ok but I knew I could do it better and for as cheap as the materials were I could afford to screw up.
    The skirts are made of PVC rain gutter the I got from the hardware store for $6 for each 10' section. I also used E6000 glue and bondo to smooth it out. Metal plates and double side sticky tape attach it to the car and are strong enough to keep the rock solid. I used automotivetouchup.com to match the body color and protect it with there clear coat. The total cost of paint was about $30 so if you go with a cheaper option like plasti dip you can cut your cost in 1/2.

    Nice Job, You got the creativity, now you need a little experience in working .. Ya oughta think about learning fiberglass.. It's cheaper than your gutter and it's at your favorite Home Depot.. Styrofoam can be shaped any way you want with a wire brush and sand paper, then fiberglass over it.. A lot of People use Plaster soaked newspaper to form their panels, then fiberglass over it.. After you remove the Styrofoam, you got a One of a Kind body panel..

    • @Petrol360
      @Petrol360  Před 6 lety +1

      Man iv been dreaming of doing a wide body kit like that one day, I did 1/2 the work for these in my apartment and the other 1/2 at my brothers garage about 45min away so these were a shot in the dark if this would work but something I could do with my current living situation. Can’t wait to do some custom glass parts though!

    • @Petrol360
      @Petrol360  Před 7 lety +1

      They are STR racing wheels, they are a cheap brand and heavy as crap but they look decent. I got them used with new tires for less then the wheels alone should cost. I wouldn't spend the money on them new.

    how do you like the carb compared to fuel injection

    • @Petrol360
      @Petrol360  Před 7 lety +1

      Its not bad. Starts every time runs smooth, its just finicky. Have to let it idle for a little before taking off, and it does turn over a few times before starting when it hot. I had no reason to but I got a killer deal on a throttle body self learning efi. Should have it installed and a video out in a month or so.

    • @Qaasim830
      @Qaasim830 Před 7 lety

      Petrol360 Yeah I'm just conflicted on either to go carb or efi because I have a 302 short block but I don't have all the efi electronics and stuff plus wiring. so it's as if I want to spend the extra money for it or just go carb but sweet scoring on the efi setup it should be nice!

    • @Petrol360
      @Petrol360  Před 7 lety +1

      Ya I went carb at first because I was missing all of the parts and harnesses in order to go efi. If you know how to tune a carb then it should be easy. Plus if you upgrade the motor its much easier and cheaper to tune a carb then efi. I more or less daily my car so efi will make it much easier to just jump and go. Im also hoping to pick up some power and gas millage.

    Make sure you use a flexible Bondo otherwise it will crack also need a paint with a flex agent as well

    • @Petrol360
      @Petrol360  Před 7 lety

      Good points! I didn't know they made flexible bondo and flexible paint wasn't available through automotive touch up paint. The bondo has not cracked after a few thousand miles so my fingers are crossed that it stays good. The paint is also holding up well. No chips in the wheel wells which I was expecting by this point. It also helps that the skirts are very stiff so they are not flexing very much causing the paint to crack.

    • @chrisbevins1218
      @chrisbevins1218 Před 7 lety

    • @Petrol360
      @Petrol360  Před 7 lety +1

      Along the top edge I used 3M extreme outdoor double sided sticky tape. This keeps you from adding any holes to the body of the car. I also used 1" wide metal strip glued to the bottom of the side skirt then drilled the strips into the bottom of the car. I only used 4 strips per side and they are plenty strong.

      That's what I used to attach it under the car, I had the 3m double side sticky tape where the skirt meets the body. Then on the bottom edge I glued 1" metal strips that went under the cars rocker panel. I then put screws through the metal and into the bottom of the car. I only used 4 metal strips per side and its really strong on there, better then most people install there real skirts.
